  1. Kompany on Koleosho, January transfers and Brightonpublished at 11:05 7 December 2023

    Harry De Cosemo, BBC Sport

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany faced the media on Thursday before his side travel to Brighton on Saturday.

    Here are the key lines.

    • Team news: "Luca [Koleosho] is going to be out for a while - it is bad news. We'll do everything we can to make sure he gets back fully and doesn't sustain any long-term damage. He's still young. We have to give him time to recover; I'd like to think we'll see him again this season. It is for someone else to step up.

    • Lyle Foster is "in a better place" after taking a break for his mental health: "He is making good progress and every detail counts. He is getting good care. I'm hopeful it won't be too long."

    • He will not make unnecessary signings in January: "The squad is still fairly large and we do not have unlimited resources. If we can find a way to improve the squad drastically, we'll do that. We won't just add numbers."

    • On Brighton: "They are one of the top sides in the league. I played against them in my last ever Premier League game [for Manchester City] and the progress they've made is incredible. It was a game we expected to win but they've established themselves in every way possible as one of the top teams in this division."

    • He will not compromise on his positive approach: "We always have the mindset we can do something. The team has that belief now - we need to get the final bit right. There is clear improvement of individuals and the collective but it doesn't mean anything unless you win."

  2. Your thoughts on Tuesday's matchpublished at 08:33 6 December 2023

    Your views

We asked for your comments on Tuesday's Premier League game between Wolves and Burnley.

Here are some of your comments:

    Wolves fans

Alan: Not a very inspiring performance but three nice points. We need a forward-thinking midfielder as far too many passes went backwards or sideways for us to ever score a ton of goals. Good defensive display though with Mario Lemina outstanding again and a good performance by Dan Bentley in goal.

Simon: We needed three points and ground out a victory. Burnley are always a tough team to play but fortress Molineux struck again.

Adrian: No better than Burnley, with the only difference being a gifted goal.

    Burnley fans

Wesley: Typical Burnley performance; start well, energy on and off the ball, play some nice football and then naively concede playing out from the back. Vincent Kompany spoke about being more solid, but we lack the defensive quality that enables us to play out from the back in this league. You can sense the opposition licking their lips. We really miss Ian Maatsen.

Carl: No attack to speak of, sloppy unimaginative passing, defensive blunders - we are going back to the Championship, where we’ll look much better.

Trevor: Very poor defensive errors cost us the game after a promising opening 35 minutes. Kompany needs to change his ideas.

Bob: Such a lack of urgency. Ridiculous goal gifted from playing about at back - when will we learn?

  3. Wolves 1-0 Burnley: What Kompany saidpublished at 22:36 5 December 2023

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany, speaking to Amazon Prime: "When you are down at the bottom the start of it all is to be a difficult team to play against. Of course we want the result but the game was fairly even and could have gone either way.

"The strength of our team is that we go again. Our team has so much room for improvement, it is an exciting group to work with. But of course now it is a painful moment.

"At this level when you mistake you get punished. We had plenty of moments there where we could hurt them and maybe we just didn't have that final moment there."

On a mistake leading to a goal: "Everyone has a different way to deal with these moments, for me I don't dwell on it and go and feel sorry for myself, I see a coachable point there, something you can teach and work with them to improve on. We need to help them and that is my job."

  4. Wolves 1-0 Burnley: Key statspublished at 22:31 5 December 2023

    • Wolves have lost just two of their last 12 Premier League games at Molineux, winning seven and drawing three.

    • Burnley have lost each of their last four Premier League away games – they last had a longer losing run on the road in the division between November 2016 and February 2017 (7).

    • Wolves registered their first clean sheet in their last 12 Premier League games, since a 1-0 over Everton in August.

    • Burnley (7 points) are only the eighth side in Premier League history to accrue seven or fewer points from the first 15 games of a campaign, with all previous seven relegated at the end of the season.

    • Only Erling Haaland (14) Mohamed Salah (10) and Son Heung-min (9) have scored more goals in the Premier League this season than Wolves attacker Hwang Hee-Chan (8).

    • On home soil in the Premier League this season, only Mohamed Salah (8) has netted more goals than Hwang Hee-Chan has managed for Wolves (6, level with Erling Haaland).

    • Matheus Cunha has been directly involved in a goal in each of his last four appearances (2 goals, 2 assists), just one fewer than he managed in his 28 games in the competition before that (4 goals, 1 assist).

  5. Full-time: Wolves 1-0 Burnleypublished at 21:27 5 December 2023

    Have your say image

Hwang Hee-chan scored a first-half winner as Wolves edged past relegation-threatened Burnley at Molineux.

The Clarets had come into the game on the back of Saturday's moral-boosting 5-0 thrashing of Sheffield United, but failed to back up that impressive showing and were left to rue a costly defensive error.

On a chilly evening in the Midlands, the contest failed to spark into life until the 38th minute when stand-in goalkeeper Daniel Bentley made a fine double save to deny Jay Rodriguez then Josh Brownhill's follow-up at full stretch.

Having been in a position to lead, the visitors then conceded at the other end shortly after as Sander Berge's heavy touch was picked off by Matheus Cunha, who fed Hwang to slot a composed finish.

The Clarets sought for the equaliser in the second half but were unable to trouble Bentley, with Vitinho's effort from outside the area which sailed over the closest they came to claiming a point.

Wolves held on to secure their first win in three games and move up to 12th in the table, while Burnley remain in trouble in the bottom three.

  8. Wolves v Burnley: Sutton's predictions published at 16:20 5 December 2023

    Sutton's predictions

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

This week, he takes on CBeebies presenter Rhys Stephenson.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-0

Burnley will be full of confidence after their brilliant - and much-needed - win over relegation rivals Sheffield United.

They will be looking to bring Wolves into the battle at the bottom too, but Gary O'Neil's side still have some breathing space over the drop zone despite three defeats in their past four games.

I also think Wolves will be too streetwise for the Clarets, especially at Molineux, which is why I am going for a home win.

    Rhys' prediction: 1-0

  9. 'Burnley found their ruthless streak and put on a show'published at 12:48 5 December 2023

    Burnley fans voice graphic

Natalie Bromley, No Nay Never podcast, external

There was a moment at 2-0 up, the game already buried, that we took our foot off the gas. This period of flatness was epitomised by the sight of Dara O’Shea literally walking the ball from his own penalty spot to just over the halfway line, unchallenged by anyone in a claret shirt or a red shirt.

Then it happened. Burnley turned the screw, found their ruthless streak and put on a show.

You get very few opportunities in the Premier League to exert dominance over an opposition team. And I thought this young Clarets side were going to pass up that opportunity.

But the consequential swagger they found not only boosted our goal difference, but instilled some belief in those players and reminded them of what winning feels like.

Can we carry that confidence into the game at Wolves on Tuesday? Can we put together back-to-back wins for the first time this season? I hope so. I think so.

It is no surprise that a settled side is helping with some consistent improvements (the early-season tinkering was baffling to many of us) but we will miss Jordan Beyer after his silly yellow card put him into suspension. But suddenly we have all got belief!

  10. O'Neil understands Burnley backing for Kompanypublished at 17:27 4 December 2023

    Vincent KompanyImage source, Getty Images

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil says he's not surprised that Vincent Kompany has stuck to his tactics in the Premier League: "He has been fully backed by the club to sign the type of goalkeeper he needs, to sign wide players to help him play his way and to fit what he wants. They have spent a decent amount of money on an already fairly talented group.

"They use different shapes a lot, bringing their full-backs inside, or on the top line or using a 4-2-4 against Sheffield United the other day. It’s quite difficult to predict exactly what they will look like, so we have a real focus on us and we are ready to go."

On Burnley's struggles at the bottom of the table: "They are a very good side that have probably lost more games than they deserved to and have been impressive in large parts.

"They are very organised and have been together a long time so the group has a real good understanding. It will be a tough game and there will be moments where we have to fight and scrap."

"This will be a very different test [to Wolves' last match against Arsenal] so there's different things we need to focus on. There's not the same amount of time to prepare, so there’s not quite as much detail going into the boys about Burnley."

  11. Wolves v Burnley: Pick of the statspublished at 17:20 4 December 2023

    • Having won their first three Premier League meetings with Burnley between 2009 and 2018, Wolves are now winless in their last seven against them in the competition.

    • Wolves are also winless in their past five Premier League games against promoted sides, having been unbeaten in seven such games before this.

    • Wolves have both scored and conceded in each of their past 11 league games. It is their longest such run since between August and October 1985 in the third tier.

    • In their 5-0 win against Sheffield United, Burnley had five different goalscorers in a league game for the first time since January 2016 against MK Dons, and for the first time ever in the Premier League (excluding own goals).

    • Hwang Hee-chan has scored five goals in his six Premier League home games for Wolves this season, with their 2-1 win against Spurs last time out the only time he has failed to score at Molineux in the league this term.

  12. 'The mindset we have at the club to press the reset button is incredible'published at 13:41 4 December 2023

Vincent Kompany and Nathan Redmond celebrateImage source, Getty Images

Burnley are "part of the elite" when it comes to their mindset manager Vincent Kompany feels.

The Clarets moved off the bottom on the table with an impressive 5-0 win over relegation rivals Sheffield United on Saturday and ended a run of seven home defeats in the league this season.

They can take confidence from the result into another important fixture against Wolves on Tuesday and the Burnley boss has praised his players' ability to reset after each game.

"I said to the guys before the game that I felt that they were going to be celebrating on the day. I felt they were going to be celebrating their efforts and mental strength and determination in tough times, I didn't know before the game but I told them that," said Kompany.

"The only thing I wanted to say after the game is that you can't take for granted the amount of pressure there is on such a game for us. Probably only one of two games where people will say you're a little bit favourite, other games we're not.

"On top of that lack of winning and results, to start and finish the game like this is a lot of pressure. So I want to say the mindset we have at the club to press the reset button and to continue the hard work is incredible.

"There is big gap between Premier League teams and us still, but I think there is aspects of the club where we are part of the elite, in mindset and things."

  13. Kompany on strong mentality, 'little milestones' and Rodriguez experiencepublished at 12:02 4 December 2023

    Nicola Pearson, BBC Sport

Vincent Kompany has been speaking to the media before Burnley's Premier League match against Wolves on Tuesday.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Kompany confirmed there won't be any returning players from injury for the match and Jordan Beyer will also be missing through suspension.

    • On having positive records after recent negative ones, he said: "It just shows how quickly these things can go. One minute you’re talking about negative records then all of a sudden out of nothing you’ve got this. But the same way we dealt with the other stuff we just move onto the next game now it’s done."

    • Asked if a win against Sheffield United feels like a turning point, he said: "We've put in a lot of good performances recently. We’ve probably not had what we thought we deserved. It’s life and you don’t always get what you deserve. We’re prepared to work for it, mentally we’re strong enough to deal with whatever comes to us."

    • He feels Burnley are a "very calm club" during difficult runs of form.

    • Kompany said communication in the club is "never political", adding: "It’s an environment where people can do their job but not one for excuses, it’s a very good environment and for the players as well."

    • On how much he enjoyed the clean sheet as a former defender, he said: "For the team as a whole, but I can imagine the defenders and goalkeeper will have taken more pride in achieving that. The little milestones you achieve along the way, you never know when they come and it's the hardest league to achieve them."

    • With a quick turnaround to the next game, Kompany says he is "happy to go anytime" and has "a lot of faith and trust in squad to get through moments with a lot of games".

    • On importance of Jay Rodriguez's experience, he said: "It’s everything to us, I think that is why our conversation is still about youthfulness because I still think there is a reasonable balance in our squad with players like Rodriguez."

    • He added: "He was one of England’s top talents in the front line, some of the things people are seeing now might surprise them at his age, but he is a top talent."

  14. 'Questions were beginning to circulate about Kompany'published at 08:49 4 December 2023

Vincent Kompany, Manager of Burnley, celebrates after the team's victory in the Premier League match between Burnley FC and Sheffield United at Turf MoorImage source, Getty Images

The Daily Telegraph's Luke Edwards believes Burnley needed their triumphant 5-0 win over Sheffield United, as they look to climb out of the relegation zone.

Vincent Kompany's side had racked up seven consecutive losses in all competitions, which left them bottom of the Premier League table, but five goals secured their first home victory of the campaign.

"Burnley needed that win, let's not forget that. Questions were beginning to circulate about Vincent Kompany," Edwards told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"There's been a lot of talk about this being three of the worst promoted teams and that it will be one of the most predictable relegation fights. I think it's a bit too early to say that.

"I'm really pleased for Kompany. I think, with Kompany as manager, Burnley wanted to stay true to who they are and play the style of football they want to play. It might not work, they might still go down.

"They have had a really tough start to the season but we're not halfway yet, we will see where they are probably at the end of December."

We asked for your thoughts on Saturday's game between Burnley and Sheffield United.

Here are some of your comments:

    Burnley fans

Miller H: Burnley have almost got points but this win shows how they can get out of the drop zone. Its a real booster for the team and the manager. Football is a game of confidence and Burnley now have it.

Bob: All the chatter can stop now. Keep the faith Burnley fans.

Peter: What a relief! At last we've found our shooting boots and converted good football into goals. Yes, Sheffield United gave us lots of "help" but we were relentless. Great performance - onwards and upwards!

Clarky: Brilliant. I'm buzzing my head off.. now that's what we are about .. that's what we do when we become a unit that runs smoothly and most of all we stick together. That is claret and blue right there. I'm proud to be a Claret. Well done Vincent Kompany.

Peter Dawson: Good overall performance against a very poor Sheffield United. Nice to see Koleosho get a goal his performances have warranted.

    Sheffield United fans

David: For the first time in years , I sense we are witnessing the start of a reversal of Sheffield dominance. Wednesday have found a manager who is giving them a winning mentality. In Heckingbottom , we have a loser.

Eric: No passion, no guts, players need to have a long good look at themselves. Probably just cost Heckingbottom his job. Please no Wilder or Warnock.

Simon: Blades have a Championship squad at best. So what’s the point in sacking Heckingbottom? He is a decent manager. Keep him for next season when he should come into his own again.

Brian: Losing heavily again to a side at the bottom end of the league confirms what we already know. The Blades are simply not good enough to be in the Premier League and will surely be relegated. The level of indiscipline, particularly McBurnie is an added problem that must be addressed by Heckingbottom, if he’s still around next week at this time.

Neil: The season is panning out just as I expected. The owner has brought this all on. Will be interesting to see how he intends to improve things if he doesn't get the sale of the club he wants. Totally selfish of him. He is destroying all the great work that was developing through Wilder and Heckingbottom!
