  1. Sutton's predictions: Everton v Crystal Palacepublished at 11:15 28 September

    Chris Sutton and Paul Smith

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches this season, against a variety of guests.

For week six, he takes on Maximo Park singer Paul Smith, whose latest album, Stream Of Life, is out on Friday.

Everton host Palace at 15:00 on Saturday.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

Crystal Palace are a very capable side on their day, but they have not been playing well enough recently.

Everton boss Sean Dyche definitely needs a good result, and I am slightly worried about the atmosphere at Goodison Park if it turns ugly for whatever reason, and how the players handle that.

I keep going for Everton home wins, and being wrong, so I am not making that mistake again. They keep taking the lead but it feels like they need to get Jarrad Branthwaite fit again if they are going to hold out.

I actually fancy Everton here but without Branthwaite at the back I am not so sure they have got a clean sheet in them and, on that basis, I am going to say Palace will get a point.

    Smith's prediction: 1-1

Palace have looked bright on occasions without beating anyone, while Everton have gone in front in games and done well without seeing it out either - they have an attacking threat but they are fragile defensively and have completely crumbled in a couple of games.

Their confidence will be low, so I’d say Palace have a good chance of nicking a win, but then neither team have looked very convincing to me.

  2. Glasner on Holding, Eagles midfield and Evertonpublished at 16:27 27 September

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game at Everton (kick-off 15:00 BST).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • On who will and will not be in the squad: "Matheus Franca and Trevoh Chalobah are available, but Franca will not be in the squad after it was his first complete week with us. After almost six months, it would be unfair to him to be in the squad but he feels well and he has no problems. Trevoh will be with the squad, but we lost Chris Richards this week. He is not available for the next week as he has a hamstring injury. The other players are available. It’s Cheick Doucoure and Chadi Riad who can’t play, but the others had a good week."

    • Glasner was happy about the numbers in training this week: "This was the first week I have had a complete squad in training. I have experienced a lot in football but never been in this situation with a first training week with a full squad at this stage in September. Against Manchester United we showed patterns that we don’t want to show. It is my job to be clear with the players and we used this first week together - we increased the training intensity, we increased what we demanded from the players. It gives us confidence that we can fight to get the results. We will need this at Goodison Park against a very physical and direct team."

    • Glasner was asked why Rob Holding was not included in a squad photo this week: "Rob is training with the under-21s. He will stay there and that's why he was not in the picture."

    • The Palace manager explained why Adam Wharton has had four different midfield partners since the season started: "It's not to find the right mix - it’s about adjusting to what’s going on with players. Once, Will Hughes was a six we had Daichi Kamada at the beginning but then we needed him playing in the ten. It’s just a natural part. We have several options and we also decided to rotate a little bit when we had three games."

    • On Everton: "They have a very clear style. They are very direct, very physical, Calvert Lewin as a target player and quick wingers. They are crossing the ball from everywhere and very threatening in set-plays. We know they have some weaknesses in their defence and will give you some space - but we have to neutralise their strengths and also use our opportunities to score goals."

  3. What's with the dark arts?published at 07:58 27 September

There has been a lot of conversation this week about "dark arts" in football following the draw between Manchester City and Arsenal on Sunday.

Realistically, everyone who has watched football for longer than one game has seen things they would perceive as "dark arts"; whether it is a player always going down winning free-kicks to take the sting out of the game, kicking the ball into row Z when there was no multi-ball system or time-wasting on goal-kicks.

These are things we see all the time but our perception of it is dependent on the context of a game. You always see some version of it somewhere, and you hope your team would be doing the same thing if in the same situation - because why should you do something that would benefit the opposition you are against?

It is the same as going down a bit more easily to win penalties - some people will say "this guy is a cheat", but then on the other side of their mouth, if it is something that could benefit them, they say "he has tried too hard to stay up, he needed to go down there".

You can have rulings, Ifab can get involved to change this and that, but there will always be a way to push the rules to their limits.

What we saw with Arsenal in that game, where David Raya sat down to get some treatment while the teams gathered, we have seen those moments before. It is not just new to Arsenal - other teams do it.

It is always based on certain moments. You do get more frustrated if it happens against you, but when you need to do it, you encourage people to do it. That is one of the beauties of football - the way you see things is always going to be down to perception, context and just whether you think it is benefiting you or not.

  4. Replacing key players always 'going to be tough'published at 15:08 26 September

Losing two important players from a starting line-up is going to have an effect on any club, let alone Palace.

The decision to sell Michael Olise was always on the cards and seeing him flourish for Bayern Munich goes to show the talent he is. The problem is, how do you replace such a player?

A club of Palace's stature are never going to bring in a replacement of the same calibre. We knew this would be the case as soon as Olise's stock increased game by game.

As for Joachim Andersen, that was a surprise departure. However, selling a player of his age for the fee that was paid, it is understandable why it was enticing.

It became clear that it would be Andersen or Guehi leaving and however much fans may not like it, that was perhaps a no-brainer with the club not willing to match the wages Fulham were offering the Dane.

Replacing a centre-back that has formed an excellent partnership with Guehi was also going to be tough, but Palace do their homework. The problem is, it often takes players time to settle, particularly when arriving from leagues outside of the UK.

We were exceptionally lucky with Adam Wharton and Daniel Munoz in January as they both hit the ground running.

The new additions this summer will take time to adjust to the Premier League. But, they are deemed good enough by the club to have been brought in so patience is the key while they are integrated into the Oliver Glasner system.

Crystal Palace finished last season in fine form but are winless in their first five games of the new Premier League campaign.

It has left Oliver Glasner's side sitting 16th in the table with three points - just two more than those in the relegation zone.

BBC Sport pundit Nedum Onuoha feels the club are the "odd ones out" down that end of the table, so how are you feeling about the start the team have made, Eagles fans?

Crystal Palace are one of six teams yet to win in the Premier League this season - but is there are a concern they could be involved in a battle against relegation?

When you see the way they finished last season, you would say no, but then last season they finished with Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen being a big part of what they were doing. They are two key players who are not there any more.

They have brought in others and are trying to balance things out.

It is a bit of a concern, but you still believe they have the quality. It feels like one of those where when they get that first win, it might not guarantee a second one the week after, but the belief in themselves will be there again.

They do feel a bit different to the three promoted sides, for example, or to an Everton where there are bigger things weighing the club down beyond just the football itself.

  8. 'Nothing like last season's team' or 'keep the faith'?published at 16:58 25 September

Palace boss Oliver Glasner gives his side a thumbs up from the touchlineImage source, Getty Images

We asked for you to tell us one thing that is not being talked about enough at Crystal Palace at the moment.

Here are some of your comments:

Richard: I've noticed the lack of patience with from fans, who are expecting instant success, after our run at the end of last season. We've lost a couple of first team players, bought in new players like Daichi Kamada, Maxence Lacroix, Ismaila Sarr and Eddie Nketiah. They need time to settle in, particularly the ones without Premier League experience. Keep the faith, people!

Rich: Matches this season have felt like expectations will get us through matches. The end of last season was built on hard work, understanding the system and our pace when pressing. This season the energy is missing and while the new players are bedding in, they have not met the high standards the players we've lost set. I'm positive Oliver Glasner is the right man and we will improve.

Bill: This time last year we were four points better off with a supposedly inferior side. I think it was wrong to sell Joachim Andersen and we should have cashed in on Marc Guehi. I don't think Kamada is any better than Jordan Ayew. I believe Jean-Philippe Mateta had a "purple patch" and will revert to the form he had in his first two years. I'm also unsure of Glasner's tactics.

Martin: Have no clue why we sold Andersen. He was the rock at the heart of our defence and now we look vulnerable. That uncertainty has spread through the team. Selling Michael Olise was a given, but Andersen??

Matt: I think the winning run we had at the end of last season seems long gone. I'm seeing nothing of Palace this season like I saw last.

Steve: Our passing accuracy has slipped this year. Our defence is looking vulnerable too. I was optimistic after the end to last season but my hope is slowly evaporating as replacements are not looking like enough for the Premier League.

  9. Could Mateta international debut come in Mbappe absence?published at 16:18 25 September

Real Madrid's announcement that forward Kylian Mbappe is out for three weeks could benefit Crystal Palace striker Jean-Phillipe Mateta.

The 27-year-old has not been shy in admitting that he is "dreaming" of his first international call up with France and also said that the goal is "in his head" when he spoke to BBC Sport last season.

Since that interview at the end of the previous campaign, Mateta scored five goals in six games at the Olympics in Paris to earn a silver medal for France, impressing then-manager Thierry Henry in the process.

Since returning to south London, he has added to his tally with four goals in seven games for the Eagles.

In 2024, he has scored 23 times in 33 games across all competitions for club and country.

With former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud now retired and Mbappe set to return after the international break, Mateta's chance is opening up.

He will no doubt be watching closely when Didier Deschamps announces his squad next Thursday ahead of Nations League matches against Israel and Belgium.

  11. Palace's number one 'knows the role is his'published at 12:51 24 September

    Fan writer

Dean Henderson of Crystal PalaceImage source, Getty Images

While shirt numbers may only seem symbolic in football, for Dean Henderson this summer, it was anything but.

When Crystal Palace gave Henderson the literal number-one jersey before the season started, with previous owner Sam Johnstone still at the club, it was final confirmation of what was already clear – Henderson was the club's choice of the two rivals.

In truth, that positional battle had been decided for some time.

With Henderson having usurped the Palace starting role last season and, admittedly through injury, Johnstone's place at the Euros, it was a matter of time before the now number two left the club.

As a pure shot-stopper, there have been few doubts about Henderson's superiority, and his performance against Manchester United was a second defiant display against a stronger side in the opening fixtures - giving the team an undeserved draw.

In fact, after this weekend, Henderson leads the Premier League in 'goals prevented' with +3.9, per Opta, while England incumbent Jordan Pickford is sat bottom of the division in a struggling Everton side.

Despite that statistical accolade, detractors remain among the fans. After all, goalkeeping extends beyond just the shots faced, with players always under the microscope for any errors they may commit.

The past few weeks have been anything but plain sailing. On the way to conceding goals, there was hesitation in closing down Jamie Vardy against Leicester and a weak punch against QPR. Additionally, his distribution, admittedly a theme of the entire team for the opening 45 minutes this weekend, is an area needing improvement.

However, as the lone number-one talent and with the club's full endorsement, Henderson has peace of mind that the job is his - and it is already positively impacting the scoreline.

Daniel Munoz of Crystal Palace is challenged by Diogo Dalot of Manchester United during the Premier League match between Crystal Palace FC and Manchester United FC at Selhurst ParkImage source, Getty Images

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Crystal Palace and Manchester United.

Here are some of your comments:

    Crystal Palace fans

Len: We were lucky to get a point out of this one; however, Eze had two golden opportunities that he would normally have slotted home. Our injury list continues to present problems in selecting our best XI…but, we are not the side who finished last season so well.

Keith: Out-thought tactically in the first half and out-fouled too, with United scything down Eze repeatedly. Much better in second half, which was very even. Good performance from Henderson and the defence, but Eze continues to utterly waste golden opportunities.

Glen: Today I saw a better performance. They definitely looked fitter however the formation was not working which was very obvious from the stands. Unfortunately it took until the 70th minute to change things up. Overall we had the best of the second half and should have scored. Please start Sarr and loaning out Rak-Sakyi looks a bad idea now.

Steve: What has happened to Palace? The first half was a throwback to the Hodgson days. Passive. Negative. Unable to put two passes together. Glasner’s half-time talk brought some improvement, but Palace looked like a team already battling against relegation. I hope I’m wrong, but Glasner needs to turn it around before the rot sets in.

    Man Utd fans

Tim: Some really good stuff from United in the first half, with Eriksen the pick of the players. I don't think anything was gained from bringing on Rashford when Eriksen and Zirkzee were causing Palace so may problems. Fernandes, who was average by his standards, could have come off for Rashford with Zirkzee sitting deeper.

Nigel: It concerns me that United can be so dominant but yet not deliver. For me the build up is still too slow and not positive enough. Not taking their chances that were created must be a concern for Ten Hag. The team is crying out for a regular goal scorer and Zirkzee is not that player for me. Work still to do on ‘the project'.

Jason: Another big disappointment and it could have been worse had Palace took their better chances. It was the same old lack of cutting edge, it's hard to see this team putting a run of wins together and really making a statement. The lack of urgency to go get a winning goal in the latter stages of games like this is frustrating.

Chris: Should have been home and dry after 45 minutes. In football, especially at this level, you have to take advantage when on top. United lacked a ruthlessness in front of goal and inevitably Palace then had their moments. There is much promise from Manchester United with a much improved back four and Onana has now hit top form. Two points lost.

  13. 'Henderson kept us alive'published at 20:12 21 September

    Oliver GlasnerImage source, Getty Images

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Dean Henderson kept us alive and in the first half we have never played like this.

"I don't talk about tactics [we played] without courage in and out of possession. Very passive and this is how we don't want to play, but it happened.

"The chance at the end of the first half gave us some confidence - we spoke very honestly at half-time.

"You can always lose a game, but when you lose it you lose it with how we played in the second half.

"Second half was much better, we could've won the game, but honestly it was a bit too much today.

"We have to be critical of us when we play like first half it makes no sense to play like this."

On half-time substitutions: "We needed the runs in behind and we knew the plan before was to play direct and in behind - we didn't play there and we needed a physical presence in midfield.

"Everyone did it in a better way in the second half. We switched the system to control the middle, at the end it worked and I think with the big chances we had in the second half the point is OK for us."

On the clean sheet: "Both goalkeepers, the clean sheet is not the tactical behaviours of the teams. Unbelievable saves form both goalkeepers."

  14. Crystal Palace 0-0 Man Utd: Henderson starspublished at 20:09 21 September

Matthijs de Ligt of Manchester United shoots during the Premier League match between Crystal Palace FC and Manchester United FC at Selhurst ParkImage source, Getty Images

Dean Henderson joined the Manchester United academy in 2011 when he was 14.

He progressed to the first team and made 29 first-team appearances for the club, alongside loan spells at numerous clubs including Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest.

He left United for Crystal Palace last summer and he was brilliant in this game.

Henderson denied Alejandro Garnacho, Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez early on - reacting quickly to readjust his feet to save from the latter two.

He made seven saves in total - the most by an Eagles goalkeeper in a Premier League match without conceding since Vicente Guaita v Newcastle in January last year.

Palace will perhaps feel they deserved more than a point in the end, but the fact they had a chance to earn more was because of Henderson's vital interventions.

  15. 'We were attacking the game to win it'published at 20:04 21 September

Joshua Zirkzee of Manchester United shoots, as Dean Henderson of Crystal Palace attempts to make a save during the Premier League match between Crystal Palace FC and Manchester United FC at Selhurst ParkImage source, Getty Images

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson has been speaking to Sky Sports: "I think in the end it was [a good point]. We missed a couple of key opportunities. There was one in the second half where we could have scrambled the ball over the line, Andre Onana made a great save and we were unlucky in the end.

"I think it was certainly a game of two halves. After the first half we will take the point and be delighted with it."

On if expectations were raised by last season's win: "No, I think we were attacking the game to win it and we had a game plan to do so. I don't think it quite worked in the first half. We made some tweaks in the second half, which made us more aggressive and on the front foot, and that gave us more success in the second half."

More to come from Palace? "We lost some key players in the summer, everyone knows that, but we brought in some good players too. It just takes time for people to get up to speed, get on the same level and understand the system.

"We've got a a great system here and we are all fully behind the manager. We believe that it will all come together once everyone is up to full fitness and people start to understand their roles a bit more. We need to just be Palace, be hard to beat and hard to play against, we need to get back to that level that we reached at the end of last season."

Of teams they’ve faced more than ten times in the Premier League, Manchester United have drawn 0-0 in a higher percentage of their games versus Crystal Palace than against any other opponent in the competition (16% - 5/31).
