In 2006 Gary Kelly visited the home, external of two young Irish lads who had joined the Leeds United Academy. Kelly was not impressed with their flat.

The Irish right-back was in his 14th year at Leeds. He took the academy players to a real estate agent the next day and got them to pick out an apartment close to the training ground. "Don't be late to training, and stay out of trouble," were Kelly's instructions.

Despite falling out with then chairman Ken Bates, and manager Dennis Wise, Kelly's loyalty to Leeds stretched to paying the rent of these young academy players for a year.

This level of loyalty cannot be expected, bought or written into contracts. Loyalty is a choice – a choice that creates heroes.

There are players who the club and manager wanted to keep who have left this summer. And in defiance of contractual obligations, three Leeds players are refusing to play. Perhaps the likes of Gary Kelly simply do not exist any more.

Leeds United doesn't need those who aren't committed, the club needs heroes. And the players who have chosen to come, to stay and to fight will know love that those who rush for the exits will ever receive.

  2. Leeds, Canada and transferspublished at 15:04 21 August 2023

Kevin - a Leeds fan in Canada

    Jonny Buchan, BBC Radio Leeds

I was in a park in Vancouver last week, popped my head into a clubhouse and a guy called Kevin - pictured - turned around and said "I know you! You're from the podcast - Don’t Go To Bed."

It was a really weird moment as you can imagine. It turns out he is a Leeds fan but lives in Vancouver and coaches for Burnaby FC.

If you look his t-shirt is a ‘Strachan, McAllister, Batty and Speed’ number.

I felt like my fellow Don't Go To Bed Just Yet presenter and Kaiser Chiefs bassist Simon Rix - famous.

Tyler Adams has left Leeds United for a permanent move to Bournemouth.

The United States midfielder joins the Cherries on a five-year deal after one season at Elland Road.

He arrived from RB Leipzig in July 2022 and made 26 appearances in all competitions for the Whites.

  4. 'Show of strength from Farke' over Leeds triopublished at 18:48 16 August 2023

    From the press box banner

    Adam Pope, BBC Radio Leeds

Ex-Leeds United chairman Massimo Cellino famously said "I drive the bus" after taking over at Elland Road. The present incumbent Paraag Marathe wanted to help his predecessor Andrea Radrizzani "to fly the plane" before upgrading himself from first officer to pilot. The 49ers Enterprises are no longer second in the command in the cockpit, nor just contributing to the fuel costs, but are in full control of the aircraft and its direction of travel.

Manager Daniel Farke has also made it clear that he too is in charge of his own cockpit: "I made it clear, no one tells me who I should pick or who is not picked. It is just up to me as a manager to make the decisions on who is ready to play. I want to be in the driver's seat".

It was a show of strength from Farke who revealed that Willy Gnonto, Luis Sinisterra and Helder Costa are all training separately and are "not part of the dressing room" whilst their futures are decided. The German demands players who are completely dedicated to the club.

When asked about forward Sonny Perkins' availability, he added: "Yes, if I pick him. Each and every player has the chance to shine in training to prove and show that he is ready to play. If the player is not there on the level we need for the Championship, I won't pick him. I think it would be the wrong sign to choose a player who is not there with top class training performances. I'd rather go with less players, but with those who are there spirited and committed."

Farke indicated that nearing the end of the transfer window has strengthened United's hand in terms of the players' contractual positions, "the more we are in control over the situation. Over the last days the situation has eased up a little."

Even better, he suggests, the club can save the best of its business until last because "we are quite confident that we will have a competitive group come the end of August."

  5. Farke on Sinisterra, squad size and the need to strengthenpublished at 14:10 16 August 2023

    Adam Pope, BBC Radio Leeds

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has been speaking to the media before the Whites host West Brom in the Championship on Friday.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • He says there are some legal aspects re: Luis Sinisterra's contractual situation so they are awaiting for an outcome. He, unlike Wilfried Gnonto, has a release clause. Both players and Helder Costa are training away from the main group and are not involved in the dressing room.

    • Farke says with regard to the contract situations the club is in a stronger position as the window goes on. He sill expects to have a competitive squad come the end of August.

    • He added: "It’s not my place to speak about the financial situation. But there are some rules. We know we have to bring in some players."

    • Asked if there is still time to strengthen, he said: "Yes, 100%."

    • He says the size of the group "is too small in numbers. We’re working behind the scenes and are fully convinced we’re doing the right things."

    • In terms of team news. Sam Greenwood is available while Leo Hjelde is out with concussion.

    • Sonny Perkins no longer ill. Farke reminded us that he will only include players if they show the correct attitude in training. Midfielder Tyler Adams who has been linked with Bournemouth after a move to Chelsea fell through, we are told by the club, has trained today

    • Farke says "no one tells me who I can pick or don’t pick. It’s totally up to me to make the decisions."

  6. 'Really impressed with him' - Pope on Farkepublished at 09:19 16 August 2023

    Daniel FarkeImage source, PA Media

BBC Radio Leeds' commentator Adam Pope has been telling BBC Radio 5 Live's 72+ podcast his impressions of new boss Daniel Farke amid a difficult summer at Elland Road: "I have been really impressed with him and nobody is putting any blame on him.

"There is a feeling he can reinvigorate the club and the playing staff while bringing a nice playing style. He is very candid, but manages to be so in a way that does not annoy those above him as he explains he is short of players and needs quality and experience.

"He has shown a great way of managing expectations - and let's not forget this is a guy who had a mural to him in Norwich and had such great rapport with the fans. We all know there is a great pedigree there."

  7. 'What little is left of transfer window is likely to define entire season'published at 13:46 15 August 2023

    Leeds United talking point graphic

Adonis Storr, The Roaring Peacock, external

Emblazoned on the front of Elland Road's East Stand are the words "side before self'. But perhaps Billy Bremner's motto would serve the club better if it was written into players' contracts.

These players got the club relegated. By the way some are shirking responsibility to the point of leaving or refusing to play, it is sometimes difficult to remember that.

The mass loan exodus – seven and counting since relegation – coupled with a growing injury list, has left the Leeds United squad looking perilously thin.

The one man at the club whose efforts cannot be questioned is new manager Daniel Farke. He has the team playing attractive, attacking football, and has previous promotions to his name - but he cannot be competitive with the side that travelled to Birmingham on Saturday.

The squad needs a refresh, and the fans need hope. A striker, a creative midfielder and a left-back seem like minimum requirements.

What little is left of the transfer window is likely to define the entire season.

Leeds must put their faith in Farke and back him with quality signings.

  8. 'It's the stark reality of relegation'published at 11:22 15 August 2023

Leeds players attempt to win the ball at Birmingham CityImage source, PA Media

The latest episode of BBC Radio Leeds' Don't Go To Bed Just Yet podcast reflects on a "crazy" week at Elland Road.

Full-back Max Aarons was all set to join Leeds from Norwich before instead choosing Bournemouth, Jack Harrison has departed for Everton on loan, Wilfried Gnonto was unavailable for the Championship game at Birmingham amid reports about his future and Daniel Farke's side lost to a last-minute penalty in front of Blues' new minority owner Tom Brady.

BBC Radio Leeds' Adam Pope said: "This week has been crazy. It's the stark reality of relegation. I'm not saying this was said in respect of Leeds this time, but you do hear that trope sometimes that 'it'll be good to go down'. Is it heck good to go down, ever, at any point. Because you end up in this scenario."

Despite a difficult start to the season, Kaiser Chiefs bassist Simon Rix offered some crumbs of positivity, adding: "The incoming business has all been good. [The Aarons move] shows there's some money, that's my takeaway from that.

"I know we've not had a clean sheet this season but defensively it feels like we're getting there. I know they're worried about gambling on it, but get a striker or find someone on loan who can score some goals.

"A couple of wins just changes everything."

Everton have signed Leeds United winger Jack Harrison on a season-long loan deal.

The 26-year-old passed a medical on Sunday and completed the move on Monday.

Harrison is Everton’s fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of forward Arnaut Danjuma, defender Ashley Young and striker Youssef Chermiti.

  11. Could Toffees make a double Leeds swoop?published at 15:41 13 August 2023

    Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport

Everton are in advanced talks to sign winger Jack Harrison from Championship side Leeds United on a season-long loan deal.

The Englishman, 26, is having a medical before the proposed move and would be Everton's fourth signing of the summer.

The Toffees and Leeds have also been in talks to sign Italy winger Wilfried Gnonto, but are yet to reach an agreement for the 19-year-old.

Everton also have an interest in signing Portuguese striker Beto, 25, from Serie A side Udinese, but talks are not yet at an advanced stage.
