The left side of England's system remains in the balance with Gareth Southgate evasive on the area when asked in his pre-match news conference as his side prepare to face the Netherlands.

Kieran Trippier operated as a left wing-back in the shootout win over Switzerland, with Luke Shaw coming off the bench for his first minutes in the tournament late on.

Wednesday's huge Euro 2024 semi-final could see Shaw start but Southgate would not commit on his decision.

"Luke has been injured for four months so it wasn't a possibility for him to play until last match. He made a good contribution to the game," said Southgate.

"We have to make the decision if he's ready to start and it's the best way to to use him.

"We're happy he's back, he gives us a different balance.

"Kieran has done a fantastic job. We've had a lot of big nights in the last seven or eight years and he's been so important on them occasions.

"Also around the squad, how he is with the players and the staff. We're very fortunate to haver player like him in our squad."

  3. 'I'm excited, otherwise I wouldn't extend my contract'published at 17:55 9 July

Erik ten HagImage source, Getty Images

Erik ten Hag says he wouldn't have agreed to extend his contract at Manchester United if the new project didn't excite him.

The former Ajax man is preparing for his third season at Old Trafford. It will be his first under a new structure, one which he believes will help take the Red Devils to the next level.

"I'm very [excited], otherwise I wouldn’t extend my contract," Ten Hag told MUTV.

"I’m here now for two years. As I said, I came here to win, to win titles, trophies. We won two trophies, after a dry [spell] of six years, so we are in a good direction.

"Now with the new ownership coming in, they can help us. They are very supportive. We’ve made a process, which we’ve constructed across the summer and we are in a very good position, a very strong position to go and attack.

"United didn’t win, for over six years, a trophy. Now we’ve won two, but we are up for more and for higher titles, like the English title and even more, like going into Europe.

"That’s a process that takes time, and we’ll work on it, but I know with the set-up at the club, with the changes to the structure, and the changes to infrastructure here around Carrington, we will be ready for the future. We will improve.

"You feel it here, it gives a new energy, it gives a new dynamic and that will help us to achieve our targets. In the short-term, it stays the same: we want to win every game, and we have seen we are capable of beating everyone."

  6. Was Ten Hag's extension the right move?published at 11:59 9 July

Erik ten HagImage source, Getty Images

On the latest episode of BBC Radio Manchester's The Devils' Advocate podcast, supporter Andy Milne gave his view on Erik ten Hag's one-year contract extension.

Milne said: "I am happy with that. I don't agree with a lot of what Ten Hag has done. Sometimes we didn't seem to have any direction. But we were becoming a club that sacks managers. You need some consistency.

"The end of the season, culminating in the FA Cup, I thought we played a lot better. We do seem to have problems scoring and need to find a striker who regularly pops it into the net.

"Some of the youngsters were showing real promise for us. I am excited about it."

Presenter Joe McGrath was challenged on his previous calls for Ten Hag to be dismissed.

"He has a great board now backing him," said McGrath. "I hope he gets the players fit and has a starting XI.

"I have already said I would be very happy for him to have another year after what I saw post the final game of the season at Old Trafford, when he spoke so well on the pitch - and post FA Cup final.

"Next season has got to be top four and hopefully the injury crisis we suffered with is eradicated - so we have fit players who Ten Hag can play.

"Hopefully we see an ideology of where United want to go. I would like to know that I understand what Ten Hag is trying to do here."

Luke Shaw has described Manchester United team-mate Kobbie Mainoo's progression over the past year as "scary".

Shaw and Mainoo are on England duty together at Euro 2024, with the midfielder having started the final group match and both knockout ties.

Defender Shaw made his first appearance of the tournament as a substitute in the quarter-final win over Switzerland.

"When I first saw Kobbie he was in and out of first-team training, but you could see the qualities he had," said the left-back.

"He was unfortunate and got an injury [in pre-season], which maybe set him back a bit - but it didn't stop him.

"He has got the world at his feet. He just needs to stay level-headed, keep working hard and the world is his oyster.

    "He can honestly achieve anything."

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford was at Carrington on Monday and started physical work two weeks early as part of his determination to regain the form that led to him scoring 30 goals in the 2022-23 season.

Despite speculation about a potential sale, it is understood Rashford - who was left out of England's Euro 2024 squad - is committed to United.

Winger Jadon Sancho and defender Tyrrell Malacia were among players not shown on club pictures as the squad returned to training.

Sancho has been in a long-running dispute with manager Ten Hag, which led to him spending the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund and Malacia missed all of the 2023-24 campaign because of injury.

England's defender #03 Luke Shaw speaks during a press conference at the team's base camp, the Weimarer Land golf resort, near Blankenhain, on July 8, 2024Image source, Getty Images

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw admitted his journey back to full fitness over the past four months has been "really tough" after suffering "quite a few setbacks".

Shaw made his first appearance for club and country since February in England's Euro 2024 quarter-final win over Switzerland on Saturday, following a long-term muscle injury.

"The past four months have been really tough. At the start I was expected to come back a lot sooner, but I went through quite a few setbacks," Shaw revealed in the England news conference.

"I'm really pleased that I was able to get on the pitch [against Switzerland] and get some minutes. Hopefully I will get some in the next game."

The 28-year-old said he feels "fit and ready to go" before England's semi-final against the Netherlands on Wednesday (20:00 BST).

On how he coped mentally with his injury challenges, Shaw added: "The motivation was to help England and to get back playing.

"It was always about getting back fit and helping the team as much as I can. Thankfully, I'm here now and I'm feeling really good. Hopefully I get another opportunity to repay the faith."

  13. McNulty Q&A: 'I'd be very tempted to start Shaw - if he's fit'published at 13:16 8 July

Chief football writer Phil McNulty byline banner

BBC chief football writer Phil McNulty has been answering your England questions before Wednesday's Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands.

Andy asked: There was one example against Switzerland where Luke Shaw ran around Phil Foden on the overlap and took two defenders with him. For me, that's the perfect example of why Gareth Southgate took Shaw and why he has to start on Wednesday. What do you think?

Phil replied: I would be very tempted - if I was convinced in my own mind that Shaw was fit - to start him against the Netherlands. We presume Southgate will know that. He looked very good when he came on and, as you say, gave England more of a balance and attacking threat on the left, where they have struggled at Euro 2024.

Southgate, however, is a huge admirer of Kieran Trippier, speaking in glowing terms about him pretty much every chance he gets. He not only sees him as a key player but often talks about Trippier’s outstanding communication and the way he talks colleagues through games. He thinks that is a bit of a dying art in the game and Trippier is one of the best.

AC Milan adviser - and former Manchester United striker - Zlatan Ibrahimovic has confirmed the Serie A club are no longer trying to sign Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee.

United have been in talks with the 23-year-old, who is presently on Euro 2024 duty, and the path is now clear to a deal being done - if they want it.

The Old Trafford outfit have been looking to add another forward to Erik ten Hag's squad following the summer exit of Anthony Martial.

They would hope to raise some money by selling Mason Greenwood to either Lazio or Marseille.

  15. Greenwood and Sancho uncertainty as Man Utd return to trainingpublished at 10:59 8 July

The Euros may be grabbing plenty of attention but the Premier League is starting to ramp up, with teams returning for pre-season training.

Manchester United are back on Monday which raises inevitable question marks over the presence of Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho in particular.

Greenwood is not expected to be present as discussions over a move continue. He spent last season on loan at Getafe after serious criminal charges against him were dropped.

That move came after former United chief executive Richard Arnold reversed an intended decision to reintegrate Greenwood into Erik ten Hag’s squad.

However, with United committed to selling Greenwood and bids having been received from Marseille and Lazio, it is understood the focus remains on sorting out a permanent move away from Old Trafford.

The same situation also applied to midfielder Donny van de Beek, who is close to joining Girona.

Sancho has not trained with the first team at United since September 2023, when he refused to apologise for the inflammatory social media post criticising manager Ten Hag.

In addition, it was not totally clear whether Casemiro refused to go on the bench after being dropped for the FA Cup final in May. He certainly made a swift exit from the post-match celebrations.

The Brazilian was left out of his country's Copa America squad.

And there may also be a return to the club for Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was just awaiting a work permit to join Ten Hag's coaching team.

Manchester United have sorted out Erik ten Hag’s contract, now they are looking to get his backroom team tweaked.

With pre-season training due to start on Monday, time is of the essence.

  18. De Ligt: A risk worth taking?published at 16:11 5 July

Bringing a centre-back to Old Trafford appears to be a priority for Manchester United this summer. The club have shown an interest in Jarrad Branthwaite, Jean-Clair Todibo and Lenny Yoro, but their pursuit of Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt seems to be the most advanced.

On the surface, there is plenty for United fans to get excited about. Still just 24 years old, the defender is already very experienced and successful, having played for three European giants in Ajax, Juventus and Bayern Munich. De Ligt has won multiple trophies and been to three major tournaments with his country.

His time at Ajax, particularly the period under United boss Erik ten Hag is arguably what de Ligt is most known for. He became a mainstay in the Ajax defence, captaining the side to a league and cup double in 2019 and being a key member in their run to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Given how much trust Ten Hag put in de Ligt during their time at Ajax, there is little doubt the manager would be keen for a reunion in Manchester this summer.
