Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who finished second in the Sao Paulo sprint race: "It was a very fun race, it was tricky conditions, especially at the beginning, but we tried to keep the pressure on Lando. Yeah, just came short, but tyre deg was quite big and the wind was picking up during the race, but it was a fun race.

"Confidence is high, but the field is so tight. At the end yesterday, it was hard to put a lap together, and I believe everyone did a few little mistakes. But we'll see today what we can do, but hopefully achieve the same result or even better."

McLaren’s Lando Norris wins the Sao Paulo sprint: "It was tough, it makes the win a little bit more rewarding when you have a race like this, especially with Kimi Antonelli, he was certainly not making my life easy.

"It's one of those ones where you have to push because you know the guy behind is going to push a little bit more.

"It was a little sketchy, I had a couple of little lifts but even with the wind it was tricky and the degradation on the tyres was difficult.

"It was definitely not an easy race but probably the race you expect in Brazil, it's always a difficult one."

Being on the soft tyres: "It was a struggle, the softs at the beginning I was expecting to be better, but the Mercedes were keep and Kimi kept me under pressure for the whole race.

"I just expected us to be a little bit better and we weren't, but I don't know how much is down to the tyres or just that Mercedes did a good job.

"They were quick today so we've got some homework to do before qualifying."

On fighting for pole: "I'm confident we can do that, I think our qualifying pace was good but the wind changed a lot today, the conditions are different.

"Today is different to yesterday and tomorrow is going to be different to another day, but they're going to put us under pressure I'm sure. You've got to do some perfect laps."

  3. Perfect start for Norrispublished at 15:18 GMT

Has this got the makings of a Grand Slam weekend for Lando Norris? He's taken pole for the sprint, won the shorter race, watched his main title rival walk away with no points and has extended his championship lead to nine points. Not a bad start at Interlagos.

This is why I dislike sprints - this could determine this year's World Championship, and that should be down to Grand Prix results, not silly little arcade sprint ‘races’.

The yellow flags are out but Lando Norris crosses the line and takes victory in the Sao Paulo sprint race. Gabriel Bortoleto is climbing out of the Sauber and into the medical car.

Kimi Antonelli, after a valiant effort to chase down Norris, finishes second and his Mercedes team-mate George Russell is third.

That was a huge crash for Bortoleto. He smashed into the barriers at high speed on one side and was sent sliding across the track to the other. Hopefully he's OK for qualifying.
