  2. 'The second row here is not a terrible place to start' - Russellpublished at 23:57 BST 25 October

Mercedes' George Russell, who qualified fourth, speaking to Sky Sports: "My first lap in Q3 was very poor, my last lap was good and I found half a second. Lando Norris and the Ferraris were just out of reach.

"Oscar Piastri was in P8 and a tenth behind me so I'm glad to be on the right side of that tenth, the second row here is not a terrible place to start."

On the start of the race: "You just go for the gap if it appears, you can't really make a plan because it's often down to the guy on pole.

"If he wants to stay on the left and give the slipstream to odd-numbered starters, or if he moves to the inside, the even-numbered starters get the benefit. You're sort of at the mercy of the pole man."

  3. 'All year it has taken me to get here'published at 23:55 BST 25 October

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who qualified third, speaking to Sky Sports: "So happy to be up there in the top three.

"All year it has taken me to get here, but finally gelling with everything around me.

"Myself and my engineers are starting to extract the performance from the car. It has been a tough year and I can't believe it has taken me this long.

"It is part of the journey and I have grown a lot from it."

On his starting position: "It's not that nice on the inside, it is quite dirty on the inside. So quite grateful to be third.

"P3 is not a bad position to start here, so I'll be quite aggressive, and I want to move forwards."

  4. 'The car is performing well and Lando maximised it' - Stellapublished at 23:53 BST 25 October

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella speaking to Sky Sports: "The lap is actually strong in pretty much every corner, if I'm not wrong Lando Norris is first in every single sector. The car has behaved well.

"I think we have a few things that we need to regroup and understand coming from the last few races.

"We understand the car a little bit better with the current package, the car is performing well and Lando maximised it.

"Obviously there is a bit to review on Oscar Piastri's side, it was more difficult for him to use the car when the conditions are sliding and in a way like it was in Austin.

"It is something that we need to review and make sure that we improve it for tomorrow."

That's quite a comment from Max Verstappen, saying he needs people ahead of him to retire to get ahead.

  6. 'We've tried so many things and it's just not been good' - Verstappenpublished at 23:50 BST 25 October

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who qualified in fifth, speaking to Sky Sports on why it was a difficult day: "If we would know we would change it and unfortunately we don't know. We've tried so many things and it's just not been good.

"It's not the lack of trying it's just not finding it and we went into qualifying trying something again. I think we didn't get it quite right in some corners where maybe it was a bit better but in some areas more difficult.

"That then didn't allow me to push and I knew already from Q1 in the first run that it was not going to be it."

On running a different rear-wing: "That was also not the solution so then we went back and I ran that already yesterday so there's not really any surprises with that. Basically everything that we tried didn't really work."

On the race: "There is no real recovery drive when you have no pace. I need people to retire in front of me to go ahead.

"Every lap that I have done this weekend has not been good, short-run, long-run, it never felt in the window and that is not going to suddenly change tomorrow for the better."

The race was won from pole position in 2015, 2016, 2022 and 2024.

Three of the last five wins have been from third on the grid.

Mexico is one of those races where you kind of don't want pole because of the long straight and slipstream. Norris will lose P1 before first corner.

  9. 'Tough start to the weekend, but a good quali'published at 23:43 BST 25 October

Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur, speaking to Sky Sports: "To enjoy the quali first! It is important that it was a good session.

"Probably the best session from the beginning of the season. On top of this, we were always there. There is a long stint until turn one, but let's enjoy the quali and then see tomorrow.

"I think we had pace that was decent in the last couple of races, but we struggled to put everything together. We had a tough start to the weekend, but then a good quali.

"It is much easier to do a good Q3 when you're there from P1."

On Charles Leclerc on saving a soft tyre set for the race: "We are not the only one. Lando did the same!"

Lando is on a roll now. He'll win the championship.

    Alex

Lando is now proving he is a better driver than Piastri after Piastri had the better car in the earlier weeks.

  11. 'This weekend the pace hasn't come'published at 23:35 BST 25 October

McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who finished eighth, speaking to Sky Sports: "All feels OK, just no pace. Which is a bit of a mystery. It has been more or less the same gap all weekend. We will have a look at where I was going wrong then. I would say a bit frustrating."

On the car feeling different: "Not a huge amount, to be honest. This weekend and last weekend it felt like the pace hasn't come. Not 100% sure why yet. We will do some digging."

On being able to make progress into turn one tomorrow: "I will try my best. An opportunity to make some progress forwards."

Lando is starting to believe in himself again. Max and Oscar should be worried.

    Tim

Great lap by Norris, shows his ceiling is very high if he can stay focused, but can he hold Verstappen at bay tomorrow? He needs to look after that car, because I can’t see Ferrari or Russell holding Max up much, nor can I see Piastri getting past Max.

  13. 'I'm really happy and honoured' - Hamiltonpublished at 23:29 BST 25 October

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton qualified third for the Mexico City Grand Prix: "I’m really really happy, I’m honoured to be up here with Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc.

"These guys have been so quick all year and it's an amazing feeling. This is the first time we've both been up in the top three in qualifying this year.

"The team truly deserve it, so we are just working as hard as we can and I'm super grateful to everyone in this team for continuing to push and not give up.

"We've not really moved the car forward necessarily in development but we've extracted more and our processes are better this weekend, and that is what you're seeing."

On the race pace: "It's hard to obviously to beat these two guys [Norris and Leclerc] today.

"P3 is kind of the perfect spot actually at this track, so I'm hoping I can make the most of that at the start. I think our race pace is not too bad, I think it's difficult to know really.

"I know it's going to be an amazing crowd there tomorrow so I will try and give it a good race."

I seem to remember that it is better to be in second place at this circuit due to the long run to the first corner. Interesting to see how that plays out tomorrow with both Ferraris snapping at Lando's heels.

    Richard

Lando needs to up his games and get a good start. Leclerc is a brilliant starter.

  15. 'I don't think there was much left in the car'published at 23:25 BST 25 October

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who finished second: "It is very difficult this qualifying. It's very difficult because there is very little grip, so the car is sliding a lot.

"It is very tricky, but pretty happy with the job we have done. I don't think there was much left in the car. Very happy with today's performance.

"It will mean a lot, so we will do everything to get the first place into the first corner and then see what is possible."

McLaren's Lando Norris will start in pole for the Mexico City Grand Prix: "I’m happy to be back on pole, it’s actually been quite a long time, so it’s a good feeling.

"It was one of those laps where you don’t really know what happened, it felt decent but when I crossed the line I was very pleasantly surprised.

"I’ve been feeling good all weekend, especially from today, I got a little bit nervous of the Ferrari at the end of Q3, but I pulled it out when it mattered. I'm happy because of that."

On the race: "I’ve not been sleeping well lately so maybe that’s the key to it all. I've had some good races here in the past so I will just focus on what I can control and that's all I can do."

On the championship battle: "I'm here to win, I will be looking forward. I know I'm going to have some quick guys behind me and it's a long run down to Turn One.

"The race pace from the Ferraris is usually very strong, I'm expecting a battle and I'm not expecting it to be easy. Eyes forward and I will see how much I can win by."

I remember seeing Lando Norris' face after he retired at the Dutch Grand Prix at the end of August. He looked at that point like he felt the title race was over.

If Norris wins and Oscar Piastri finishes fifth or worse tomorrow, Norris will leave Mexico as the championship leader...
