    To amend what I was saying earlier, Oscar Piastri was on a new set of tyres but they were the same set of tyres he started the session on. It looks like it stayed out on them all the time.

    Interestingly Oscar Piastri is on his second set of new tyres already in this first session of qualifying, that says to me a driver in trouble.

  4. Lando Norris also found a bit more time as he did a 1:16.899 to ensure he remains out in front.

    Another impressive lap for Oliver Bearman and he is just two tenths off Norris' time.

  5. Into the final six minutes and the drivers in danger are:

    16) Tsunoda

    17) Colapinto

    18) Hulkenberg

    19) Albon

    20) Stroll

  6. Better from Oscar Piastri as he goes third quickest and is within two tenths of Lando Norris' time.

    Isack Hadjar has been impressive as a rookie this year.

    I think he's been the standout rookie of the season and with the machinery he's had, he's been mighty impressive.

  9. Max Verstappen's first effort sees him go third quickest, 0.159s off Lando Norris.

    So it remains advantage Norris for now.

    Lewis Hamilton last won pole position in Mexico in 2016. He went on to win the race...

  11. 'Decent start for Norris'

    A little bit more time that Lando Norris can find, but so far a decent start to the session.

  12. Oscar Piastri's apparent struggles continue as he can only manage to go eighth quickest. He's seven tenths slower than team-mate and title rival Lando Norris.

  13. Charles Leclerc runs a little wide towards the end of his lap but still manages to go second quickest, 0.138s off Lando Norris' pace.

  14. And Lando Norris goes quickest with 1:17.147, six tenths quicker than Oliver Bearman.

    This track has never had a massive amount of grip and especially at this height.

    It's 2,227 metres above sea level so it's extremely high and the air density is very different to what we see at other tracks.

  16. Lando Norris is out to begin his flying lap as Oliver Bearman sets the early pace with 1:17.765.

  17. Both Aston Martins are first out, both on used softs.

    Pierre Gasly follows them but on fresh softs.

  18. First qualifying starts

    The first part of qualifying is under way.

    Remember the clock is ticking down from 18 minutes, at the end of which the five slowest drivers will be eliminated.

    Oscar Piastri is the man who is leading the championship that looks at the moment like he's lost some confidence. It looks like it has got a little bit much at this stage in the season.
