Lewis Hamilton faces an investigation for a potential red-flag infringement following a final practice session in Singapore topped by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Hamilton appeared to speed up through the final chicane of Turns 16 and 17 after the session was stopped because of a crash by Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson.

If found guilty of an infringement, Hamilton could face a grid penalty.

Verstappen headed McLaren’s championship leader Oscar Piastri by just 0.017 seconds as less than 0.1secs separated the top five drivers.

Mercedes’ George Russell and Kimi Antonelli were third and fourth fastest, with McLaren’s Lando Norris fifth.

There was just 0.072secs between Piastri and Norris, who trails the Australian by 25 points with seven races remaining.

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, who was a front-runner in Friday practice, had a low-key session concentrating mainly on race pace, and had a lap on the soft tyres right at the end of the session ruined when Williams’ Alex Albon went off at Turn 13, at the end of the Anderson Bridge.

Williams’ Carlos Sainz was sixth fastest, ahead of Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar, Hamilton, Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

  4. Is this Verstappen's time for Singapore pole?published at 11:40 BST

It was very spicy at the end there. I cannot wait, I'm so excited for qualifying. It;s one of the best of the whole season. Under he floodlights of Singapore, something magical hapens. The best drivers have torise to the game and the challenge, and we've seen some stunning pole laps here.

Can Max Verstappen do it? He's got a lot of fans here; the crowd are willing him on. But I just think, he's never done it here before, is this his time?

It's looking juicy, ready for qualifying later on. Really, really close between the top five.

  8. chequered flag

    Chequered flagpublished at 11:32 BST

Red Bull's Max Verstappen stays fastest in final practice with a time of 1:30.148 set on the soft tyre.

The Dutchman has never got pole or won the race in Singapore and the Red Bull has struggled here in recent years, but you can’t rule out the four-time champion.

  9. Postpublished at 11:30 BST

Kimi Antonelli goes fastest in the middle sector and crosses the line in third. The rookie is 0.089 seconds behind leader Max Verstappen.

[A penalty] will depend on the speed, won't it, how much Lewis Hamilton has gone over, if he's gone over, the speed the stewards are expecting the drivers to go at through that section.

But If Hamilton has gone too fast, again it's not as serious an offence as overtaking, maybe, but I remember a few years ago in Austin, Sebastian Vettel, he got a grid penalty for a red-flag infringement in free practice. So it could be a grid penalty.

  11. Postpublished at 11:28 BST

Oscar Piastri was unable to go faster as he sits in eighth on the soft trye. The McLaren driver is four-tenths behind leader Max Verstappen.

The top five is currently Verstappen, George Russell, Lando Norris, Kimi Antonelli and Carlos Sainz.

  12. 'Slam-dunk penalty' for Hamilton?published at 11:26 BST

    Sam Bird
Formula E driver on Sports Extra 2

Rules are rules. Drivers have got a delta to stick to when it comes to virtual safety cars, and they've got a speed to adhere to under red-flag conditions as well. If you go over that, it's kind of a slam dunk when it comes to a penalty. I don't know what penalty will be coming Lewis Hamilton's way when it's done in a free practice session.

  13. Fans in Singaporepublished at 11:26 BST

George Russell seems to be a fan favourite in Singapore with lots of light blue Mercedes hats in the crowd.

I've also spotted a rather large cardboard cut-out of his face. The fans never fail to disappoint with their creative signs showing their support.

  14. Hamilton under investigationpublished at 11:24 BST

    Andrew Benson
    BBC F1 correspondent in Singapore

We've just looked at the replay of the Lewis Hamilton incident and what happens is, the red flag comes out and Hamilton slows down, as he should do for the red flag, and then as he's coming in to Turns 16 and 17, which is like the final chicane, he accelerates in that corner.

I dont know whether he's going absolutely racing speed, but it's getting into that sort of area, and also carries on being quick into the pit lane, as if maybe he's practising a pit lane entry, or something like that, which drivers have to do in practice sessions.

So, I suspect it might be that the stewards think he's gone too fast through that section of the track.

  15. Postpublished at 11:24 BST

Lewis Hamilton's potential red-flag infringement will be investigated after the session.

Meanwhile, George Russell is on the radio explaining that "the rear is on the edge" and that he's "struggling for confidence" at the corner he crashed at in FP2.

  16. Postpublished at 11:22 BST

George Russell is looking strong as he now goes second-fastest in his Mercedes, with his team-mate Kimi Antonelli in fourth.

The track is really ramping up now!

Can anyone go quicker than the Red Bull of Max Verstappen?

  17. Verstappen goes fastestpublished at 11:20 BST

Lando Norris was quickest, but not for long as Max Verstappen goes P1 with a time of 1:30.148 on the soft tyre.

Lewis Hamilton is second, with Oscar Piastri in third.

  18. Leclerc P1published at 11:18 BST

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc is out on the soft tyre and goes top of the times setting a 1:30.651.

The times will start tumbling now...

  19. Team radio - Tsunoda to Red Bullpublished at 11:17 BST

"The drink system is horrible. I'm going to drown."

  20. Postpublished at 11:16 BST

We've got 15 minutes of this session left and drivers will be eager to get out and do as much running as possible before qualifying.
