Oxfordshire's Eddie Pepperell has booked himself a first appearance at the Open Championship.

The 24-year-old from Abingdon, who lost out in a three-man play-off in Sunday's Irish Open at Royal County Down, will now tee up at St Andrews in July as a consolation prize.

He will be joined by fellow Englishman, Tyrrell Hatton, who tied for fourth in Ireland, one shot shy of the play-off.

Hatton, 23, from Marlow, will make his fourth Open appearance in six years.

"This is something I can really look forward to," said Pepperell, who did not drop a single shot on his way to a final round two-under-par 69.

His biggest-ever pay day - a cheque for €217,135 - lifted him into the world's Top 100 for the first time, a rise of 44 places to 95th and having played in the US Open two years ago, getting the chance to compete for the old claret jug at the home of golf will be something else.

"St Andrews in July as a consolation prize for sure," he said. "I've been there a lot in my amateur career and on tour but to go back there for an Open Championship will be quite something.

"I grew up playing links in my amateur days so it's something I'm very comfortable with when I'm playing well. I'm going to embrace the experience and hopefully go there with my game in good shape and you never know what can happen."

Hatton bounced back from three bogeys on the back nine to birdie the 17th and par the last.

He tied with Spain's Rafael Cabrera-Bello on a one-under-par total of 283, but secured the final qualifying place at the Open by virtue of his higher position in the world rankings, in which he has now leapt 23 places to 119th.

"I definitely seem to have a way of finding my way into the Open, and I'm happy to have done it again," he said.

"I was lucky enough to qualify for my first Open when I was 18 which was at St Andrews so to be going back five years later is fantastic. It's a great place and I just can't wait to get back there.

"In my first Open I felt I was unlucky with the draw and it was quite difficult, but this is my fourth and I feel like I know what to expect. Sadly I haven't been able to make the cut yet. Hopefully this will be my year."
