US Open: Scotsman Jimmy Gunn called into Chambers Bay field

Arizona-based Jimmy Gunn has become the fifth Scot to qualify for this week's US Open at Chambers Bay.

The 34-year-old, from Dornoch, has been called into the event having initially been listed as a reserve after narrowly missing out in qualifying.

He joins Stephen Gallacher, Colin Montgomerie, Bradley Neil and Marc Warren in the Washington field.

Gunn said on Twitter: "Just got the call in the US Open 2015. Pumped!"

Gallacher and Warren qualified by virtue of their placing in the top 60 of the world rankings.

Neil won the British Amateur Championship last year, while Montgomerie joins the US Open field for the first time in seven years thanks to his victory in the 2014 US Senior Open.

Montgomerie, 51, would have been in Washington because of his new role as a golf commentator but has enjoyed three senior major victories since joining the circuit two years ago.

Now the Scottish ranks have been swelled in Thursday's field by Gunn. He moved to the United States in 2007 to turn professional after funding his amateur career by working as a caddie at Royal Dornoch and as a carpenter.

He was 113th on the money list last season in the Web.com Tour, which is the circuit below the US PGA Tour, and his best finish this season was tied for 18th at the BMW Charity Pro-Am in May.

Gunn finished 11th in the qualifier at Germantown Country Club & Ridgeway Country Club, Memphis, a stroke behind two-time US Open champion Retief Goosen, Andres Romero and amateur Davis Riley.

Fellow US-based Scots Russell Knox and Martin Laird failed to qualify for this year's US Open.
