Open 2015: Tiger Woods vows to fight back at St Andrews

Tiger Woods believes he can make the cut despite carding a four-over-par 76 on day one of the Open at St Andrews.

Three-time champion Woods, 39, has fallen to 241st in the world but claimed before the tournament that he was close to finding some form.

However, the American bogeyed his first two holes, went out in 40 and is 11 shots behind leader Dustin Johnson.

"I've got to just fight through it. Hopefully the conditions will be tough on Friday and I can move up," he said.

Woods, who has won twice on the Old Course and only missed one cut in 18 appearances at the Open, found the Swilcan Burn at the first and never recovered.

In almost perfect conditions for low scoring, he left his approach 30 yards short at the second and bogeys followed at the fifth, seventh and 10th, before a lone birdie at the 14th.

His score was his worst at a St Andrews Open as a professional and following rounds of 80 and 76 at the US Open, he is 20 over par for his last 54 holes in majors.

"I'm so far back and the leaderboard is so bunched, I'm going to have to put together a really solid round in tough conditions on Friday," added Woods.

High winds and rain are forecast for the second and third rounds.
