  1. Farewellpublished at 20:36

We are back from 06:45 BST

And that will do us for day one of The Open. A handful of players are still hacking it up but none will threaten the lead.

What a mammoth day. We had Spieth's early charge, the latest offering on Tiger's demise, Dustin firing rockets down the fairway and ultimately, the day belongs to the latter.

Dustin Johnson, it's on you tomorrow, just as it was at Chambers Bay in June. No pressure.

  2. Double bogeypublished at 20:31

    Chesters -1

Bogey, bogey, double bogey for Ashley Chesters to finish. The 18th has not been playing too harshly so it's a surprise he gave two back and he ends one under.

We know it could be a different day tomorrow with the weather. The only people who will be happy if it rains will be the umbrella salesmen.

    Hearn +2

Canadian Hearn has been in good form lately and with a 15:40 tee off time on Friday, could get some luck with the weather. The morning looks grim, check out or next entry...

  7. Spieth - an alienpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 16 July 2015

Spieth tees off at 14:34 on Friday

    Quote Message

I think Jordan Spieth is from another planet. He's from another world the way he's played today. He's been 21 longer than my aunt has been 49. Fame doesn't appear to have changed him. His head is of a 40-year-old and the rest of him is 21 perhaps.

Amateurs aren't amateurs as we used to know them! You rarely get middle-aged gentleman now - it's all youngsters, brimming with energy and desperate for glory

  9. Bogeypublished at 20:12

    Chesters -3

Hold it together Ashley, hold it together. Ashley Chesters gives away consecutive bogeys and is back to three under with one to play. He couldn't escape the 17th and will now certainly be behind Jordan Niebrugge (-5) in the race for the amateur's silver medal.

Rose -1, Fowler level, Faldo +11

While Rickie Fowler taps in for par, Justin Rose is off script and dribbles a par putt past. He will drop to one under for the day.

Nick Faldo can only dream of such a score. Cover your eyes, his par maintains +11 for day one. Yikes.

  12. Fowler on 18published at 19:58

    Fowler currently level par

    Rickie FowlerImage source, BBC Sport

Rickie Fowler, in his all blue tracksuit (looks as bad as sounds), hits a wedge into the 18th at level par.

They all go over the flag here and hope to spin it back. He gets the first bit right but the spin is lacking, few have got a tonne of spin on the ball today.

Fowler will have 20 feet or more for a birdie and an under-par round.

  13. Player reactionpublished at 19:55

    Lawrie (-6, 66)

Lawrie will have the best of conditions as he is out early tomorrow. That is if you believe the weather forecasters. Can he win it again?

In she pops Lefty. Phil Mickelson takes his hat off and looks windswept but birdie on 18 will make him feel a whole lot better as he reaches two under. What a battle.

Henrik Stenson alongside him pushes his putt a little and looks frustrated. It's par and one over for the day.

  18. Frenetic finalepublished at 19:46

Action, action everywhere, Justin Rose fizzes one at the 17th flag with a wedge... holes it... no. So close. A tap in par converted.

Phil Mickelson, wedge in hand, can he get a stroke back on 18? Here it comes, back spin, yummy. Very makeable birdie attempt from 18.

Ashley Chesters, the amateur, for par on 16, no. Lips out. Back to four under. Still a dreamy round but what odds he makes it through 17 unscathed?
