England's Luke Donald and Ian Poulter are two shots off the lead after the first round at the Deutsche Bank Open.

Donald hit six birdies, while Poulter did not drop a shot as the pair shot four-under-par rounds of 67 to take a share of second place behind Zimbabwean Brendon de Jonge in Boston.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy three-putted at the ninth, his final hole, to end with back-to-back bogeys for a 70.

But Jordan Spieth is 10 strokes behind after a four-over par 75.

The American, who won the first two majors of the year, fired eight bogeys.

US Open champion Jason Day is in contention after the Australian's opening round of 68 left him three shots behind the leader.

"It was a good solid start, " "Scoring was tougher today than in previous days, but it was a good solid round and I'll take it," said Donald, the world number 63, speaking to pgatour.com., external

"I hit a lot of good swings and made some putts when I needed to."

World number one McIlroy, who was playing his fifth round since returning from a serious ankle injury, added: "I felt like I hit a lot of good putts today that didn't go in, and that probably had to do with the speed. Obviously it was not very nice to finish with a three-putt."
