  1. 'It's kind of stupid'published at 13:45 British Summer Time 16 May

    Schauffele +1 (18:47 BST)

Xander Schauffele on the mud ball saga at Quail Hollow:

"I'm not the only guy. I'm just in front of the camera. I wouldn't want to go in the locker room because I'm sure a lot of guys aren't super happy with sort of the conditions there.

"I feel like the grass is so good, there is no real advantage to cleaning your ball in the fairway. The course is completely tipped out. It sucks that you're kind of 50/50 once you hit the fairway.

"It is what it is, and a lot of guys are dealing with it, but it's just unfortunate to be hitting good shots and to pay them off that way. It's kind of stupid."

  2. Dropped shot for Davispublished at 13:35 British Summer Time 16 May

    Davis -4 (5)

Not the start Cam Davis wanted as he's one over for the day after a bogey on the third. He's also unhappy with an approach to the fifth that hit a sprinkler head and took a huge bounce over the back of the green - but he still made par.

  3. Rai slips backpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 16 May

    Rai -2 (2)

While we're seeing good early moves from some of the big hitters around Quail Hollow, it's been a frustrating start for Aaron Rai.

He's bogeyed his first two holes to slip back to two under par.

Not how he pictured opening up this morning.

  4. Hatton on a hat-trickpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 16 May

    Hatton -5 (2*)

Brilliant start to the day for Tyrrell Hatton, who makes birdies at the 10th and 11th, his first two holes of the day, to move to five under for the tournament and in a tie for second place.

Strong early move by the Englishman.

  5. Eagle alert - stunning start for Spiethpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 16 May

    Spieth +3 (1*)

Jordan Spieth shot 76 yesterday so needed a good start today to get his Grand Slam bid back on track, and that's exactly what he's done as the American makes an eagle on the par-five 10th - his first hole of the day.

I've said it plenty of times before, but Spieth is box office viewing.

  6. Thomas picks up an early birdiepublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 16 May

    Thomas +1 (2*)

Five birdies, five bogeys, one double.

A topsy-turvy opening round for Justin Thomas left him two over par going into the second day.

It's been a tidy start today though with a well-judged birdie putt on the 11th (his second hole) nudging him one shot closer to the red numbers.

  7. Bryson hoping to step on the gaspublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 16 May

    DeChambeau E (13:22 BST)

Bryson DeChambeau is one of our earlier starters today, and will be looking to step on the gas after a level-par round of 71 on Thursday.

Three birdies and three bogeys for the reigning US Open champion, who with his length off the tee should have a serious advantage at Quail Hollow.

  8. Rai of lightpublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 16 May

    Rai -4 (12:55 BST)

Aaron Rai is making a habit of good starts to majors after shooting a four-under round of 67 to sit in a share of fourth.

The Englishman played well on the first day of the Masters and was seventh overnight, only to fade somewhat on the Friday.

A good performance here would keep him on the fringes of Luke Donald's Ryder Cup thoughts.

  10. Leaderboard sets major recordpublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 16 May

It's an unfamiliar leaderboard at the start of day two.

And it's set a major championship record.

There are 12 different countries represented in the top 10 and ties.

It means it's pretty busy for the live texter trying to cover any non-US players.
