But there's still plenty of storylines. Chris Gotterup is the man to beat after a course record-equalling 61. He leads the way on -11.

Englishmen Harry Hall, Matt Fitzpatrick and Marco Penge are all chasing on eight under, alongside the big name of Ludvig Aberg.

Rory McIlroy is still in contention, four shots off the lead, while Bob MacIntyre is just happy to have made the weekend as he sneaked in on one-under after a card of 71 in the second round.

We'll be back again early tomorrow. See you then!

  2. Who didn't make the cut?published at 19:28 British Summer Time 11 July

There are plenty of big names who have failed to make the cut. Let's have a look...

Franesco Molinaro, Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, US Open winner JJ Spaun, Collin Morikawa, and Rasmus Hojgaard have all fallen.

From the Scottish contingent, Ewen Ferguson and Richie Ramsay haven't made it while Calum Hill slipped from five under to two over after a tough day.

  3. 'I got away with it' - MacIntyre on 'poor performance'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 11 July

    MacIntyre -1 (71)

As usual, Bob MacIntyre offered an honest assessment of his day as "a poor performance" but it also had his usual magic to get him out of trouble, a near ace on the 17th.

"You can't see it land, so I was looking at the reaction of the crowd behind," he admitted. "I was looking at a group of guys in white shirts. One of them put his hands on his head, so I knew it was there or thereabouts. I didn't know it was that close!"

The 28-year-old admitted he thought his chance of progressing had gone after he lost his ball on the 13th.

"It was like 'this is it, this is curtains'. With the wind direction, some holes were playing tougher than they were earlier on - like 15. It was just silly, a poor day's golf, but I managed to fight it out.

"There's no other way to describe today but a poor performance but I got away with it."

  4. 'I could have lost the plot there' - MacIntyre on lost ballpublished at 19:13 British Summer Time 11 July

    MacIntyre -1 (71)

After a tough round that saw him lose his ball on the 13th hole, Bob MacIntyre cut a relieved figure when talking to the press afterwards.

"Anything I tried to do to fix it just seemed to make it worse," he said. "To finish the way I finished... I guess growing up on a short golf course with loads of par threes helped me in the end!

"It's when you see so many people out there supporting me, pushing me on.

"I hit so many bad tee shots. Normally I'm very good at taking one side out of the golf course out of play. Today, I felt like I was trying to stay away from it, and ending up in it.

"The par four 13 - it's one of the worst shots I've hit all year. I could have lost the plot there. I was like 'I've got to keep fighting here, there is chances'.

"To get out of here the way I did, there's positives in it."

  6. Aberg bogeys last to slip backpublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 11 July

    Aberg -8 (65), Morikawa +4 (76)

Colin Morikawa finishes with a par, but that will be his last act at this tournament. It's been a torrid day for him, with seven bogeys dotted throughout his round.

He's one of the big names that haven't made the weekend. We'll run through them shortly.

Meanwhile, Ludvig Aberg has a three foot putt for par... and he misses!

That's a surprise. He looked set to finish the day joint second on the leaderboard after eight birdies, but bogeys at the first, second and 18th means he slips a little back.

  7. MacIntyre delivers on 'rollercoaster' promisepublished at 19:01 British Summer Time 11 July

He's done it, Bob MacIntyre survives by the skin of his teeth to make the weekend. He did say it's always a rollercoaster watching him.

  8. MacIntyre through to weekendpublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 11 July

    Scott -3 (68), Scheffler -5 (68), MacIntyre -1 (71)

Adam Scott makes his birdie putt, so the fans who have stayed late on the 18th have something to cheer.

Scottie Scheffler drains his par putt. It's all on Bob now.

And he nails it! He doesn't half like testing this crowd. The defending champion cuts a relieved figure. That was too tight for his liking.

  9. MacIntyre needs to make par puttpublished at 18:51 British Summer Time 11 July

    MacIntyre -1 (17)

Bob MacIntyre on the 18th at the Renaissance. It conjures up special memories, but can he repeat the trick here, from 45 feet and down the hill?

No. It's an inch past to the left. He's left himself three feet for par.

    How's the nerves?

    MacIntyre -1, Scheffler -5, Scott -2 (17)

Bob MacIntyre on the approach... but it's not the landing area he wanted, and it rolls back down the slope to the right of the green.

A birdie is improbable from here, but he just needs par. He's put the pressure on himself again.

Scottie Scheffler and Adam Scott land it much closer.

    Aberg -9 (17)

Almost another birdie for Ludvig Aberg, as his putt stops less than an inch shy of the lip.

He exhales and stares at the ball. How did that not drop? A par will have to do.

  12. Thomas makes cut, Straka bogeys lastpublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 11 July

    Thomas -1 (70), Straka -8 (69)

Justin Thomas lines up a birdie putt on the 18th from four feet. At level par, he needs this to stay in the competition.

He keeps his cool, as the ball swirls round the cup to confirm his place in the next round. He takes his hat off, ruffles his own hair and lets out a big sigh of relief.

Sepp Straka is next to tap in, but he misses his putt from two feet. It's a bogey to finish. Not what the Austrian would have wanted.

    MacIntyre -1, Scheffler -5, Scott -2 (17)

A big drive from Bob MacIntyre on 18 and he's hit the fairway. Scottie Scheffler, who parred the last, does the same.

MacIntyre exchanges a joke with Scheffler's caddie Ted Scott. He looks a lot more relaxed after that wizardry at the 17th.

  14. Aberg on the marchpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 11 July

    Aberg -9 (16)

It's another birdie for the Swedish machine, this time at the par five 16th.

Eight birdies for the day now. Had he not started with those two bogeys, he'd be tied for the lead.

  15. MacIntyre magic sets up weekendpublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 11 July

    MacIntyre -1 (17)

Up to seventeenth for our featured trio. Scottie Scheffler and Adam Scott are off the green to the right. What can Bob MacIntyre do?

The flight looks good... it bounces an yard before the cup and bobbles just wide! That was an inch from an ace.

It looks like a certain birdie from three feet, and it is. Right now, he's playing tomorrow.

    MacIntyre E (16)

A good effort from the defending champion, but his birdie putt doesn't catch enough of the hole and stays out.

He has two holes to salvage his title defence.

    MacIntyre E (15)

Bob MacIntyre makes par at the tough 15th hole and heads to the par-five 16th knowing he must find a birdie.

He has 12ft left after three shots - this must drop...

  18. Eagle for Strakapublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 11 July

    Straka -8 (16)

Sepp Straka has battled hard today and gets his reward at the par-five 16th.

A mighty drive, a perfect approach shot and a putt to match.

They do make it look easy sometimes and Straka joins Ludvig Aberg at eight under.

As I make my way back to the media tent, I’m almost mown down by a buggy carrying none other than Irvine Welsh.

The author is doing a DJ set here layered on this evening, but has seemingly asked if he can watch Bob MacIntyre come home.

If anyone can help him write a fairytale ending…

    Aberg -8 (14)

Ludvig Aberg is close to the textbook golfer.

I for one love the pace he plays at and the cool manner with which he approaches the game.

He has just rolled in a 21ft putt at the 14th hole to reach eight under par, three shots behind leader Chris Gotterup.
