    McIlroy -3, Hovland -2, Schauffele -2 (1*)

Rory McIlroy's driver is working perfectly this morning.

He has just a little wedge in at 11 after a 341 yard bomb down the middle, which he flights just past the hole - eight feet or so left.

Xander Schauffele also has a good look at birdie.

Factor 50 aplenty at the Renaissance Club today.

Martin is topping up a lovely Tenerife tan too.

Oh boy, not even 9am and it's already absolutely boiling out here.

A cloudless sky and barely a breath of wind. Perfect conditions for the early starters to go low.

    Schmid -8, Perez -9

Make that three under through six for Matti Schmid, who takes his place in solo second.

Victor Perez remains a shot better off and in the lead.

A lot of golf is yet to be played, but that's a mightily impressive start from the German.

  5. Birdie start for McIlroypublished at 08:54 British Summer Time 11 July

    McIlroy -3, Hovland -2, Schauffele -2 (1*)

Rory McIlroy's eagle putt doesn't quite break as he expected, but he tidies up for birdie to continue his momentum from yesterday evening.

That positivity is in stark contrast to Viktor Hovland, who walks away with a double bogey after a couple of horrible wedge shots.

Xander Schauffele is somewhere in between, making a stress-free par.

  6. Lurking Schefflerpublished at 08:49 British Summer Time 11 July

    Scheffler -3

Perhaps not since mid-2000s Tiger Woods has there been such an ominous name for other players to see hanging around the top of the leaderboard than Scottie Scheffler.

Since the end of March, the 29-year-old hasn't finished lower than eighth, winning three times. One of those triumphs was yet another major at the PGA Championship.

By any metric, he is the game's top dog right now and will be desperate to win one in the home of the game.

Starting in the afternoon wave (13:43) at three under, you'd be a fool to think he won't be up there come Sunday afternoon.

    Spaun E, Fleetwood E, Syme -2

The second featured group of the morning are also teeing off at the 10th. Another two-tee start today.

We'll keep you across this group as they make their way round in the early stages.

JJ Spaun and Connor Syme find the fairway. Tommy Fleetwood is in the scary stuff.

  8. Postpublished at 08:45 British Summer Time 11 July

    McIlroy -2, Hovland -4, Schauffele -2

A towering draw from Rory McIlroy lands just short of the green and catches a slope that takes the ball down to 20ft or so.

A beautiful shot from the Masters champion and an early look at eagle.

Neither of his playing partners found the putting surface and Viktor Hovland, having played so well yesterday, takes three shots to hit the green from the nearby rough.

He will make bogey at best.

  9. What about the Scots?published at 08:39 British Summer Time 11 July

Callum Hill is up there at T-5 after carding an impressive five-under 65, with Grant Forres just two shots back in fourteenth.

Bob MacIntyre, Connor Syme, and Ewen Ferguson are all two under after one round and in a tie for thirtieth.

Richie Ramsay is level par and tied 71st with a glut of early bodies.

  10. Featured group under waypublished at 08:34 British Summer Time 11 July

    McIlroy -2, Hovland -4, Schauffele -2

Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele are playing the back nine first this morning.

McIlroy finds the middle of the 10th fairway with a laser-like driver, with Hovland and Schauffele also on the short grass about 20 yards further back.

Just the 370 yards for the Northern Irishman, who has 220 yards left on the par five.

  11. German Schmid chasing maiden titlepublished at 08:32 British Summer Time 11 July

    Schmid -6 (4)

German Matti Schmid is also making an early advance at the top of the pile.

One-under through four takes him to six-under for the tournament and into a share of second place.

No wins yet in his, still somewhat nascent, career. What a week it would be to get your maiden title.

  14. Pace-setting Perezpublished at 08:22 British Summer Time 11 July

Frenchman Victor Perez, who was co-leader overnight, is making a (very) early move.

He's three under through five holes today, taking him to nine under overall and three shots clear.

The Frenchman will feel at home this week, as he calls Edinburgh home, having moved there from Dundee a couple of years ago.

Oh, and he's known to practice at The Renaissance Club. The definition of local knowledge.

  15. Scottish Open: Day Twopublished at 08:17 British Summer Time 11 July

    Day one was a belter.

Plenty of big names are mixing it at the top of the leaderboard, and a host of seasoned pros are grinding it out too.

The conditions played their part yesterday, and in true links golf style, we can only hope they ramp up again today.

We’ve got an early marquee group teeing off shortly in Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Viktor Hovland, so let’s get ready for another day of golf in its homeland.
