  1. Hall making move?published at 09:51 British Summer Time

    Hall E (3)

Harry Hall is on one... consecutive birdies on two and three for the Englishman to return him to level par. Not at all bad given he angrily scrawled an eight on his card at one stage on Thursday.

  2. Rory on the rangepublished at 09:51 British Summer Time

Rory mania continues as massive crowds gather at the practice range to catch a glimpse of McIlroy before his round. The home hero was met with a big cheer and round of applause.

Much to the disappointment of those fans he opted for a bay at the opposite side to the viewing area. A collective sigh, a lot of shuffling and relocating before another round of applause for the Grand Slam champion!

  3. Can Bryson bounce back?published at 09:49 British Summer Time

    DeChambeau +7 (09:47 BST)

Bryson DeChambeau just doesn't get on with links golf - and he'll struggle to make the weekend now after his worst ever round in a major yesterday saw him sign for a 78.

There was even an air shot in there when caught in the rough, as DeChambeau just can't quite figure out how to best use all that power he has but still stay out of trouble in this type of golf.

Apart from St Andrews in 2022 which was a birdie-fest, DeChambeau has not finished any round of any other Open in the top 30.

His opening tee shot is straight down the middle of the fairway.

  4. Norris takes 10 on the fourthpublished at 09:48 British Summer Time

    Norris +6 (5)

    Ah, golf.

South African Shaun Norris has just made a 10 on the par-four fourth hole.

He went out of bounds off the tee, found a fairway bunker with his second try and then needed four attempts to escape the sand.

Norris was one over par for the tournament before that hole. He ended it seven over.

He, at least, started to claw back some of that damage with a birdie at the very next hole.

Here's Ken Brown on the dangers of finding the bunkers at Royal Portrush...

  5. Postpublished at 09:42 British Summer Time

    Hatton -3, Henley +1, Lee +3

Tyrrell Hatton is safely away down the first, drilling his ball down the left edge of the fairway and it just runs into the first cut.

Australian Min Woo Lee hits a low hooky one that doesn't even reach the fairway. It probably gets no more than 20 feet off the ground and gets caught up in the wispy rough.

  6. Can Rose bloom again?published at 09:42 British Summer Time

    Rose -2 (09:47 BST)

It's hard not to root for Justin Rose to win a second major this week, as one of golf's true good guys with a couple of agonising near misses recently.

He played beautifully at Troon last year, with only Xander Schauffele managing to beat him. And lost in Rory McIlroy's Grand Slam glory in April was Rose losing a second Masters play-off.

He shot two under yesterday and was one of just two players without a bogey in his round, along with Li Haotong, so he looks in solid form.

Second in driving accuracy yesterday and sixth at last week's Scottish Open after a Sunday 63, all the ingredients are there. Can this be the week for Rose?

  7. Should England expect?published at 09:40 British Summer Time

Aaron Rai is out on the links and has started with a couple of pars. The 30-year-old from Wolverhampton is two under... might he make an impact today?

He's out with compatriot Harry Hall, who's rolled in a birdie on the par five second to move to one over.

With just over half an hour to Rory McIlroy's second round, seats in the stand around the first tee are like golden tickets.

  10. Niemann out of bounds off first teepublished at 09:37 British Summer Time

    Harman -2, McNealy -2, Niemann -1

The latest three-ball to head out includes 2023 Open champion Brian Harman.

All three of these players ended under par for their rounds on Thursday, but Joaquin Niemann has made the worst possible start to round two - hooking his opening tee shot out of bounds.

He's on the green in four but about 50 feet away from the cup and he's staring at a potential double bogey at the first.

  11. Ding ding... round twopublished at 09:34 British Summer Time

    McIlroy (10:09 BST)

There are huge queues to get in. Either it's slow going through the security checkpoints, or too many people have had the same idea... get here for 09:30 and then rock up to the first tee to see Rory McIlroy heading out.

The cannier fans are already here and have worked out their strategy for the day.

  12. On the tee from England...published at 09:30 British Summer Time

    Hatton -3, Henley +1, Lee +3 (09:36)

Tyrrell Hatton started quickly on Thursday with three birdies in his opening seven holes and then played solidly from there to finish just one off the lead.

A similar start today, in relatively benign conditions on the Antrim coast, and he could be sitting pretty later this afternoon if the forecast heavy rain kicks in.

He finished joint sixth when The Open visited Portrush in 2019.

  13. 'I feel the support of an entire country'published at 09:24 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -1 (10:09 BST)

Rory McIlroy described the support he received at Royal Portrush as "absolutely incredible" in his first round.

"I feel the support of an entire country out there, which is a wonderful position to be in. At the same time, you don't want to let them down, so there is that added bit of pressure.

"But I think I dealt with it well today, certainly dealt with it better than I did six years ago."

We're already in proper full four seasons in a day territory here and it's just ticked past 9am.

The sun is shining, but it's breezy enough and there's an awkward skiff of rain that leaves it up to chance if you want to stick your coat on or leave it in your bag.

With the late finish last night there's a bit of a relaxed feeling this morning.

I'd expect that to fairly ramp up the closer we get to Rory McIlroy's tee time as fans filter in.

  15. Bounceback birdie for Bezpublished at 09:18 British Summer Time

    Bezuidenhout -4, R. Hojgaard -3 (2)

A bounceback birdie for Christiaan Bezuidenhout to restore his position in a share of the lead at four under.

Rasmus Hojgaard matches the birdie four on this second hole that's looking pretty kind this morning and the Dane improves to three under.

  16. Marc off the Leishpublished at 09:15 British Summer Time

    Leishman -2 (10)

Marc Leishman felt like he spent 12 hours on the course yesterday, but he teed off first thins morning and is obviously relishing the freedom of an empty course in front of him as he's flying.

The Australian is four under for the day and two under for the tournament after a birdie at 10 - no bogeys on the card either.

  17. Clouds around Portrushpublished at 09:09 British Summer Time

    Open ChampionshipImage source, Getty Images

Don't tell Jason Day, but there may be some changable weather at Portrush today again.

Some decent sunshine this morning but some pretty dark clouds around the place as well. Plus the wind is schedule to change direction later on today too.

    Personally I just love it.

There are 156 players in this field.

On day one, Rory McIlroy ranked 130th off the tee. Scottie Scheffler was 120th. You'd have got long odds on that before the tournament.

But these two are still well in contention, because they are so darn good with the rest of their clubs.

  19. American eagle!published at 09:05 British Summer Time

    Bradley -1 (2)

Keegan Bradley drops in an eagle on the second! The American Ryder Cup captain just dies his effort in with a final roll to make a fine three.

Actually, let's just call him the American Ryder Cup player-captain as there's absolutely no chance of him not taking his clubs with him to Bethpage now is there?

He simply has to play, but handling that and captaincy duties will be a huge test. Anyway, for now he's under par at The Open.

  20. Bogey start for Bezuidenhoutpublished at 08:55 British Summer Time

    Bezuidenhout -3, R. Hojgaard -2 (1)

Just like that, Christiaan Bezuidenhout drops out of the lead with a bogey on the first, after drawing a tough lie in the thick stuff.

He had to lay it up and although he hit a nice approach the putt was poor so he had to settle for a five.
