And the last bit from a victorious McIlroy:

"I said to Harry [Diamond, his caddie] walking up the last, 'start as you mean to go on'. I'm just as determined this year as I have been in any other year I've been out here.

"To get this win this early, it means a great deal and hopefully it'll keep the momentum going into Torrey Pines in a couple of weeks."

  3. 'Relieved to see Shane miss on 17'published at 23:22 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

    McIlroy wins Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Here's a bit more from McIlroy:

"I was really proud of myself. I had that bogey on the eighth and then to play the next few the way I did, that gave me the cushion for it to be comfortable coming down the last few."

On Shane Lowry's challenge: "There's still a few scenarios playing through your head. I even though if Shane had made birdie at 17, a three-shot on 18 compared to two shots is different. I was relieved to see him not hole that.

"I would have hit driver if I needed up the last but playing it as a three-shotter was what I needed to do. It was also good to see Shane make four to finish second on his own, that'll make our flight home a bit better for both of us.

"It's cool to win in California where I historically haven't played that well before. It's a really cool way to start the season."

  4. 'Cool to win at one of golf's cathedrals'published at 23:18 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

    McIlroy wins Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Rory McIlroy speaking to CBS: "Some people would argue the golf courses I've won at aren't up to Augusta or Pebble but to win at one of the cathedrals of golf is really cool.

"I knew today was going to be tough and exciting, there were so many guys around the lead. I had to put that to the back of my mind try to shoot a score, which I was able to do.

"To have that walk up 18 and take it all in was really cool."
