    1UP MacIntyre/Rose v Homa/Clark (3)

    Show us the line, Rosey.

The Englishman obliges on the fourth as he draws an iron in from the right, leaving about 12 feet separating his ball from a birdie.

None of his playing partners get as close, with the Americans both missing the green.

    Another European chance...

  2. America get first lead of the daypublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Hovland/Hatton v Spieth/Thomas 1UP (6)

A chink of light for America.

Viktor Hovland’s birdie putt goes slightly awry and Justin Thomas can eye up a birdie opportunity from eight feet.

Rolling, rolling, drops. America take the lead in this match.

That’s the first red we have seen on the leaderboard today – six-and-a-half hours after the opening tee shot.

    1UP MacIntyre/Rose v Homa/Clark (3)

    Solid Bobby, very solid.

MacIntyre is showing exactly the sort of golf which earned a spot in the team in the first place.

Hitting fairways and hitting greens in reg.

That leads to a par on the third, earning the half and keeping European noses in front.

  4. Thomas 'heart and soul' of US teampublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Hovland/Hatton v Spieth/Thomas A/S (5)

    Dan Rapaport
American golf journalist on BBC Radio 5

I think this is what people expected from Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth the whole time and I think this is why people were surprised they weren’t out there first.

They are the most fiery pair and Thomas is the heart and soul of the American team in the team room.

I think if there’s a guy that is going to set the tone and not worry about ruffling feathers – it is Justin Thomas.

    Rahm/Hojgaard v Scheffler/Koepka A/S (4)

A mere 297 yards to the pin on the par-four fifth.

Shout out for the fluffy head covers Scottie Scheffler is sporting for his woods. A bit warm today though - his driver will be baking inside there.

He's dragged right with his tee shot so will be chipping. Better from Brooks Koepka though whose on the fringe and might fancy it.

Neither Nicolai Hojgaard and Jon Rahm are threatening the cup, but are well placed to get up and down for birdie.

    1UP MacIntyre/Rose v Homa/Clark (2)

Here is Wyndham Clark with the wedge from the edge... nah, never looks likely.

The Americans must settle for a par on the third and you'd expect MacIntyre to earn a half here to preserve the European lead.

Shane Lowry has been talking to BBC Sport Northern Ireland colleagues. He said that in the break he told the rest of the team to show “no mercy” out there this afternoon.

The Irishman also said he had been told he would be playing with Rory McIlroy this week but that plan changed “a couple of weeks ago” to put him with Sepp Straka. "What a great fella and he's a great player to play foursomes with."

"My message to the boys is foot down, keep going and win as many points out there as we can."

How Max Homa could do with dropping this in.

Chipping on to the third green, the American holds his breath as he wonders... Is it? Will it?

Nope, it doesn't drop but it leaves the simplest of tap-ins and means Wyndham Clark can go all out with his birdie attempt from the back of the green.

    Rahm/Hojgaard v Scheffler/Koepka A/S (4)

Lovely from Brooks Koepka as he chips onto the green from the rough and is mere inches from converting a birdie.

The other three in this quarter all face long putts but none of them can convert. Halved.

  10. Fitzpatrick puts Europe aheadpublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    1UP McIlroy/Fitzpatrick v Morikawa/Schauffele (2)

That'll do! Matt Fitzpatrick adds another splash of blue to the scoreboard, confidently dropping a birdie putt from about 20 feet.

    Europe lead in another match.

    1UP MacIntyre/Rose v Homa/Clark (2)

Rose pushes his drive on the third into the thicker stuff, hacking out his second but way short of the green.

No bother, his partner has got his back.

MacIntyre finds the green with his approach, not as accurate or troubling the flag as he would like, but it is up there.

    Hovland/Hatton v Spieth/Thomas A/S (5)

As I say that about Viktor Hovland, he judges his chip to perfection and it trundles a foot short of holing out. That’s a kick-in birdie.

To win the hole, one of Justin Thomas or Jordan Spieth will have to pull off something remarkable with their wedges.

Not to be – half for this hole.

    McIlroy/Fitzpatrick v Morikawa/Schauffele A/S (1)

Matt Fitzpatrick might have been a surprise omission this morning in some people's minds, but you feel the fourballs eases any lingering pressure he feels about getting off the mark.

The Yorkshireman looks to be purring already, as he knocks an iron from the second fairway to within about 15 feet of the pin.

    Hovland/Hatton v Spieth/Thomas

Viktor Hovland has not hit the same heights this afternoon yet and he's short of the green off the tee on five. This is where he slam-dunked his first shot in the practice round yesterday.

Playing partner Tyrrell Hatton is in the greenside bunker, slap next to Justin Thomas.

Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth is on the edge of the green but still 13 yards from the cup.

  15. Koepka levels up for USpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Rahm/Hojgaard v Scheffler/Koepka A/S (3)

Trouble at the third for Jon Rahm and Nicolai Hojgaard who both walk away with bogeys after poor tee shots.

Brooks Koepka is not one to pass up that gift and he sinks his par putt.

All square in this one too.

Evidently there is more than one Bananaman wandering round the Rome countryside. Ally and James from London were racing off to watch Tyrrell Hatton when I bumped into them before.

Plenty of fans are stopping off en route to matches to grab beers from the workers wandering around the course with water and beer boxes on their backs.

It's eight euros a pop though for less than a pint, with bottled water at four euros!

  17. Rose puts Europe aheadpublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    1UP MacIntyre/Rose v Homa/Clark (2)

The fist pump arrives before the ball has even hit the hole!

Never in doubt for Justin Rose.

The 43-year-old Englishman drains his short putt and moves his pair in front.

The momentum from this morning has continued into the Roman afternoon for the hosts.

  18. Spieth chips in to draw levelpublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Jordan SpiethImage source, Reuters

The first chant of "USA, USA, USA" rumbles around Marco Simone and it's the magic hands of Jordan Spieth that's done it.

Out in the rough but he's a wizard with his short game and he chips it in.

All square in match one - and the first thing that has gone right for the US so far today.

  19. Postpublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    McIlroy/Fitzpatrick v Morikawa/Schauffele A/S (1)

Nice start in the greens from Matt Fitzpatrick as he rolls one in from 12 feet for the half on the first.

We all know about his 0-5 Ryder Cup record, and so does he! He's desperate to get at least something to his name this afternoon.

  20. Postpublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    MacIntyre/Rose v Homa/Clark (1) A/S

First up for the birdie on the second green is MacIntyre.

Fresh from landing one on the first, the Scot has another confident putt but the ball drifts off left.

Homa next... an aggressive push misses the cup.

Big chance for Rose to put Europe ahead in each of first three matches...
