Europe look just so much sharper. The Americans, who have been so underplayed since the end of August, are paying a big penalty because they do look rusty, and Europe are capitalising.

    3UP Rahm/Hatton v Scheffler/Burns (11)

    Crank up that pressure, Jon.

He has fired in a wonderful second shot that sprays onto the green and will leave Tyrrell Hatton a tasty look at eagle from 13 feet.

Scottie Scheffler’s ball was wedged in some deep rake marks in that fairway bunker so he can only club it out to 77 yards.

Europe’s grip is tightening on this match.

    4UP Lowry/Straka v Fowler/Morikawa (9)

You can guess the kind of language coming out of Shane Lowry's mouth as he finds the water off the 10th tee....

  4. Stat Attackpublished at 09:08 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

The USA have won only two foursome sessions in their past seven Ryder Cups played on European soil: One in 2002 and the other in 2010.

Can't see them adding to that tally from here can you?

    3UP Hovland/Aberg v Homa/Harman (10)

Ludwig Aberg can't convert his birdie putt, giving half a chance to Brian Harman.

But it is not a simple one, even for someone with the putting ability of the Open champion.

This putt dropping could be a spark for the American pair, who have started like damp firewood.

Nope, Harman can't land it and they go to the 11th tee still trailing by three.

    3UP Rahm/Hatton v Scheffler/Burns (11)

Hole 12 has quite a narrow fairway to hit off the tee but it's no trouble for Tyrrell Hatton who sends a lovely drive into its heart.

Sam Burns needs his spade though. He's slapped his shot into the fairway bunker.

  8. Fleetwood Mac extend leadpublished at 09:04 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    2UP Fleetwood/McIlroy v Schauffele/Cantlay (8)

It would have taken something spectacular from Fleetwood Mac not to win the eighth hole after Cantlay went swimming.

The European pair seal the deal without any fuss and move two ahead for the first time in this final foursomes match.

  9. Rahm extends Europe's advantagepublished at 09:03 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    3UP Rahm/Hatton v Scheffler/Burns (11)

After the wayward tee shot on 11, America have been playing catch-up and Scottie Scheffler's 31-foot putt for birdie falls short.

Sam Burns cleans up for par but Jon Rahm can seal the hole from short range and he duly does.

Europe three up with only seven holes left.

    3UP Hovland/Aberg v Homa/Harman (9)

Oh, Viktor Hovland! That was... lovely. The Norwegian caresses an iron into the 10th green, potentially giving Sweden's Aberg another look at winning a hole.

This is turning into the finest Scandi collab since The Bridge.

  11. Europe 4UP at the turnpublished at 09:01 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    4UP Lowry/Straka v Fowler/Morikawa (9)

It's another one for Europe as Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka birdie the par-five ninth and after Collin Morikawa's lag putting left Rickie Fowler with an eight-footer he couldn't make.

Lowry holes from four feet for the win and they now go four up after a wonderful front nine, albeit helped by four American bogeys on that front nine.

Mike: The present system of a draw i.e. the previous winners keep the Solheim/Ryder Cup should be kept. It's clear and understood by all. A play-off not involving all players would be unfair and one with all players would be a nightmare. Let them ALL rest after 3 days of stress.

    1UP Fleetwood/McIlroy v Schauffele/Cantlay (7)

With Xander Schauffele dropping in front of the water and assessing his options, Rory McIlroy plays first and increases the pressure with a peach of an approach.

Looking good for another blue hole here...

Oh. What's Patrick Cantlay done here?!

    He's had a stinker, that's what he's done.

The American dumps his second shot on the par-five eighth into the drink on the left.

Surely that's a heavy contact, looks like he got more divot than ball.

  15. Postpublished at 08:55 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    2UP Rahm/Hatton v Scheffler/Burns (10)

The 11th is possibly the easiest hole at Marco Simone and Jon Rahm makes mincemeat of it with a superlative drive into the heart of the green.

This is a par four as well.

Scottie Scheffler cant respond this time, he's dunked his left and Sam Burns will have an ugly lie for their second shot.

Cantlay's ball did not check as he might have hoped, leaving Schauffele with a difficult birdie putt which he can't convert.

Opportunity knocks for Tommy Fleetwood... lipped out! Groans around the green illustrate the exasperation.

Still, the European pair lead by one.

    2UP Rahm/Hatton v Scheffler/Burns (10)

    It's Europe's morning all right!

Breathtaking from Jon Rahm. Ten yards from the pin, he races a chip on to the green and after four skidding bounces it drops straight in.

Rahm raises a fist aloft as the crowd goes wild. A hammer blow for the Americans.

Give Scottie Scheffler his due though. He keeps his focus to sink his putt and halve the hole.

Few outside of golf's inner circles had heard of Ludvig Aberg at the start of the year.

But now the 23-year-old Swede is one of the names on everybody's lips, leading to a buzz of excitement about the European rookie.

Chosen as one of Luke Donald's six wildcards, Aberg was ranked 3,073rd in the world back in January and only turned professional in June.

He is the first player to be picked for the Ryder Cup having never played in a major tournament.

After impressing Donald first hand when they played together at a PGA Tour event in Detriot in July, Aberg cemented his spot in the team after winning the European Masters title earlier this month.

"I have faith in Ludvig - I think he'll be a generational player," said Donald.

"If he wasn't going to play this one, he was going to play the next eight. That's how good I think he is."
