  1. 'Players won't want to let him down'published at 17:10 British Summer Time

    BBC golf correspondent

I think it could potentially be inspirational. The way the players he has selected have been speaking I think there will be a sense of responsibility among those who got the vote ahead of the captain to make sure they don't let him down and give him the victory that he craves.

It has been an unsettling process throughout this. There has been so much uncertainty.

We have to take him on his word that his mind was made up a while back. It has been a fascinating build up to all of this but now we go to a sense of normality somewhat - there will be a captain, he won't be playing and it will be all about America trying to wrestle that trophy back.

For Europe it will be about coming up with the formula for one of those rarest feats in sport and that is an away win.

  2. US remain narrow favouritespublished at 17:09 British Summer Time

Just under a month to go go. Interestingly the odds have not really changed from this morning with the bookmakers after those selections. The US remain narrow favourites to reclaim the Ryder Cup.

  3. 'Common sense has prevailed'published at 17:03 British Summer Time

    Iain Carter
    BBC golf correspondent

I think perhaps the most disappointed person will be Luke Donald because the European captain I am sure would have enjoyed the fact his opposite number had to worry about playing as well as captaining.

Common sense has prevailed here. We talked before how difficult it would be to do both jobs and do them as well you need to to win a Ryder Cup.

It has now become clear that all along Keegan Bradley felt his role was to be the captain and not a player. It changed somewhat when he had that big win in June but ultimately it came down on the side of doing the job he was appointed to do and not be a player.

I think that does make an awful lot of sense when you consider what former captains have said about hos difficult it would be to play as well.

  4. 'They all handled it like pros'published at 17:00 British Summer Time

Keegan Bradley on who was the toughest player to omit: "They were all tough. It was all me sitting on my chair in my house trying to get the strength to call these guys.

"I know what it takes to get this close to making the team and not making it. You never know if you're ever going to get another shot. As a player I was aware of that when I didn't make the last team. It's heart-breaking.

"When you get this close to making a Ryder Cup team, one of the hardest teams to make in any sport, it's devastating.

"They all handled it like pros."

  5. 'He wants to do what's best for the team'published at 16:56 British Summer Time

Justin Thomas on Keegan Bradley not playing: "It's going to be said so many times between now and the end of the Ryder Cup that Keegan did and will continue to do what he thinks is best for the team.

"It's been a cool process to be a part of as a player. The communication and how transparent Keegan has been isn't something we've experienced before. There were guys that heard things that they wouldn't be expecting to hear, brutally honest.

"He's been in those shoes of being in the dark and that's how he's approached this captaincy. He wants to do what's best for the team, communicate everything as well as he can, and I know he's gutted - all of us are gutted for him.

"But I would say him leading us to victory would be cooler than any experience he could have as a player."

  6. 'I don't care if I play or don't play as long as we win'published at 16:55 British Summer Time

Keegan Bradley on the attention on his captaincy: "It's really strange. This whole year has been strange. I've been really surprised at the attention this has gotten. I understand the weight and the history but I was really focused on being the captain the whole year.

"I never really considered playing until after Travelers. I was interested in being the best captain I could be. I felt like really comfortable with the guys and that I feel like I can best the serve the team this way. I don't care if I play or don't play as long as we win on Sunday.

"This is the decision we made. it's strange that it got this much hype. The Ryder Cup is a big deal apparently."

  7. 'I said be angry with me'published at 16:53 British Summer Time

Keegan Bradley on leaving out Maverick McNealy: “Very, very difficult call.

“It’s difficult to get a pick in your first event, I’m impressed with his game, I said it’s OK to be angry. You can use this as fuel. Be angry with me and make the next team.

“I advised to do that and he made a great run, it was a really tough decision.”

  8. Tough omissions for Bradleypublished at 16:52 British Summer Time

Jordan Spieth is one of six players that has missed out for the United States after playing in their defeat in Rome two years ago.

Three-time major champion, Spieth, 32, had been hoping to make his sixth appeared in the Ryder Cup.

Maverick McNealy, who is ranked 19th in the world, just above both Patrick Cantlay and Cameron Young was aiming for a debut after making seven top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour in 2025.

  9. 'The toughest day of my captaincy'published at 16:45 British Summer Time

More from Keegan Bradley, on what it was like telling players they weren't in the team: "I realised I was going to ruin the dreams of a couple of guys here. It broke my heart and still does. I was in a unique position calling guys that I may see on the golf course the next day. I like the calls to go short, sweet and to the point but it was really tough. The toughest day of my captaincy for sure."

  10. No Spieth or Koepkapublished at 16:45 British Summer Time

Aside from Keegan Bradley electing not to play there are several other big names that have not been selected.

Brian Harman, the 2023 Open champion has been overlooked presumably because he is deemed not a big enough hitter for Bethpage Black.

There is also no Jordan Spieth, who has formed a pretty handy partnership with Justin Thomas in the past.

The likes of five-time major champion Brooks Koepka, who now plays on the LIV Golf tour is not playing, nor is Wyndham Clark, Rickie Fowler or Maverick McNealy.

  11. 'They can make comments on what I can or cannot do'published at 16:38 British Summer Time

Keegan Bradley on Rory McIlroy's saying he could not do both jobs: “I am not worried about what they do or say.

“I'm not sure how he would know if it is not possible, nobody has ever done it, I said through this process I wish I could call Palmer and get his advice.

“The simple fact is it’s a different animal now to the 60s, they can make comments on what I can or cannot do. No-one would have known.

“I was confident if I did need to play, I had incredible vice captains to lean on. This was the decision I thought was best.”

  12. Circumstances conspire against Bradley taking a playing rolepublished at 16:36 British Summer Time

There is a certain amount of irony here in that Keegan Bradley was left out of the US Ryder Cup team two years ago.

That undoubtedly helped him to be named as captain this time around but he would almost certainly have been named as a player if anyone else was captaining the team in 2025.

  13. 'There was a point this year where I was playing'published at 16:36 British Summer Time

Keegan Bradley on not selecting himself: "The decision was made a while ago that I wasn't playing. The last 48 hours we had the team set, we weren't scrambling at all.

"This was a tough decision. There was a point this year where I was playing. All these guys stepped up in a major way and played their way onto this team. It's something I'm proud of and really wanted.

"It was an extremely difficult decision but one I'm really happy with, I'm happy with these six players. I'm glad it's over."

  14. 'Broke my heart not to play'published at 16:32 British Summer Time

Keegan Bradley, on how it feels not to be playing: "I grew up wanting to play Ryder Cups and wanting to fight alongside these guys. It broke my heart not to play, it really did. I was chosen to do a job and be a captain for this team and my ultimate goal was to be the best captain I could be. This is how I felt I could do this.

"If it got to the point where it felt the team was better with me on it I was going to do that. I know 100% for certain this was the right choice.

"These six guys played so incredibly coming down the stretch here and made my job so much easier."

  15. 'There was a point this year where I was playing' - Bradleypublished at 16:31 British Summer Time

US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley's first question is about why he has not decided to play:

"This was a really tough decision. There was a point this year where I was playing," he says.

Keegan Bradley on Sam Burns: "Sam is an incredibly passionate golfer. He's one of the best putters on the planet. He's won the Matchplay Championship. He has an extreme competitive fire in his belly.

"I have a lot of respect for Sam in the way he came on at the end of the season to make this team. His back was against the wall and he played well every week to end the season. I've been in that position and that's some of the hardest times to play good golf is trying to make these Ryder Cup teams and Sam did that.

"We love to have Sam on our side with that putter at Bethpage Black. He plays with his heart on his sleeve and people are going to love that."

  17. 'Privileged and honoured'published at 16:25 British Summer Time

Patrick Cantlay: "What an honour and a privilege it is to be picked for the team.

"These team events over the last five years a lot of them are my best memories playing golf in my life.

"These team events mean everything to me.

"Keegan's passion is palpable. Everyone involved in this can see how dedicated he is to give us the best chance to compete.

"When someone has that dedication and passion it is a lot easier to buy in and fight alongside him for the common goal."
