  1. Hovland comes up shortpublished at 18:04 British Summer Time 13 June

    Hovland -1, Morikawa +3, Scheffler +3 (17*)

The long par-three eighth trips Viktor Hovland up as he lands his tee shot miles short of the hole, still just one the green but it's a back flag and he's got over 60 feet still to travel.

The lag putt this time is pretty ordinary as it's carrying far too much pace and with 12 feet left he misses that for a three-putt bogey.

    Scott E, Aberg +2, Matsuyama +4 (18:03 BST)

Adam Scott is approaching a century of consecutive major appearances in a run stretching back almost a quarter of a century, and still the Australian is contending for the sport's biggest prizes.

A level-par 70 in round one puts him right in the mix at Oakmont, while Ludvig Aberg and former Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama are not too far away and will hope to draw themselves closer to the leaders today.

  3. Spaun under waypublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 13 June

    Spaun -4

Our leader JJ Spaun, wearing a very jazzy red and dark blue polo shirt, begins his second round at Oakmont.

The American sends his opening tee shot straight down the middle of the fairway.

    A good start.

  4. Postpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 13 June

    Burns -3 (17*)

Sam Burns is going to have a birdie putt from 13 feet on the eighth for a share of the lead.

The American gives that a nudge down the left and it doesn't come back, slipping past the hole.

He keeps his concentration and knocks in the return. A birdie there would have given him the chance of a 63.

  5. Postpublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 13 June

    Rahm +3, Spieth +5, Johnson +9 (17)

A fine bunker shot gives Jon Rahm another birdie opportunity on the driveable par-four 17th. But that putter is stone cold today. Audible frustration from the Spaniard.

It's not as if those birdie chances on the back nine have been easy by any means - but given the difficulty of the course, it makes your outlook a whole lot brighter if you can sink a couple of them. A bit of extra insurance for the inevitable struggles you have faced, or will face, at Oakmont.

Jordan Spieth makes a 15-footer for par to increase his chances of making the weekend.

Dustin Johnson makes a lengthy par putt too but, at nine over, his race is almost run.

  6. Scheffler improvingpublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 13 June

    Hovland -2, Morikawa +2, Scheffler +3 (16*)

Good test of nerve for Viktor Hovland on the seventh as he's left with 70 feet to get down in two for his par, but he hits a really good lag putt to leave just a couple of feet for a four.

Scottie Scheffler meanwhile finally finds something more like his usual stuff with a stellar approach that leads to him sinking a six footer for birdie.

He's now heading back into the safe zone away from that cut line after his second birdie in four holes.

  7. Bogey for Koepkapublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 13 June

    Koepka +1, Lee +9, Thomas +11 (17*)

After a regulation par at the seventh, Brooks Koepka comes undone on the par-three eighth with an ugly three putt to drop back into the black numbers.

In 11 of the past 12 US Opens, including Erin Hills and Shinnecock Hills, where Koepka was the winner, the eventual champion was in the top five on the leaderboard at the end of the second round.

The American is currently in a tie for 10th.

Oh, and the one exception by the way was Matt Fitzpatrick, who was tied for 13th after 36 holes in 2022.

  8. Leader Spaun starting soonpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 13 June

    Spaun -4 (17:52 BST)

JJ Spaun chips in on his first hole on Thursday

JJ Spaun is about to start his second round and he remains in the lead of the US Open at Oakmont.

The American shot a bogey-free 66 on Thursday and anything close to a repeat today will put him in a commanding position at the halfway mark.

As we've seen though, a decent score around this place is easier said than done...

  9. Hatton hovers above cut markpublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 13 June

    Hatton +4 (15)

After that eagle on the 12th, consecutive bogeys on 14 and 15 have brought Tyrrell Hatton back to four over par and just the right side of the current cut mark.

  10. Bad bogey for Viktorpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 13 June

    Hovland -2, Morikawa +2, Scheffler +4 (15*)

Really poor bogey for Viktor Hovland the par-three sixth with what looked a pretty regulation up-and-down - well, as much as you can get one around Oakmont!

But he's not caught his short putt properly and after back-to-back birdies it's now a bogey as he slips back to two under.

  11. Race to the bottompublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 13 June

    Duangmanee +28 (9)

Much much earlier today we highlighted the trials and tribulations of American Will Chandler after he shipped eight shots in his opening three holes. The 27-year-old lefty has finished with a 14-over 84 and 22 over par total.

But it looks like he's not going to finish in 156th and last place.

George Duangmanee, a 23-year-old from Virginia, looks like he's going to win that battle.

He started the day on 16 over and has had five bogeys, two doubles and a triple in his opening nine holes to be 28 over. We hope he's enjoying the experience of his first US Open regardless of his score.

  12. Postpublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 13 June

    Rahm +3, Spieth +5, Johnson +9 (16)

Jon Rahm sends another birdie putt closes but it stays up on the left edge. Par.

Jordan Spieth follows him in for three and stays close to the current cut line - he's in a tie for 64th at the moment, with the top 60 and ties making it through to the weekend.

  13. Postpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 13 June

    Rahm +3, Spieth +5, Johnson +9 (15)

Jon Rahm's birdie attempt misses but he saves par.

Jordan Spieth bogeys the hole and he slips back to five over - which might just be enough to make the cut.

A double bogey six sends Dustin Johnson back to nine over for the tournament and his chances of sticking around for the weekend have receded significantly with that.

  14. Snowman for Bergerpublished at 17:03 British Summer Time 13 June

    Berger +3 (12*)

Daniel Berger's ball goes the same way as Collin Morikawa's on the third having found the rough at the back of the green with his second.

His chip goes scurrying past the cup and miles off the green and he then flies 30 feet past with his fourth.

From there he takes four putts to pretty much wreck what was looking like a very decent score.

  15. Postpublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 13 June

    Rahm +3, Spieth +4, Johnson +7 (14)

    Jon RahmImage source, Getty Images

Jon Rahm is finding his range with his iron shots.

His approach to the 15th settles about eight feet from the hole - another birdie chance upcoming.

  16. Birdie for Kopekapublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 13 June

    Koepka E, Lee +9, Thomas +10 (13*)

Brooks Koepka can't drop in a 12-footer for birdie on the fifth but more than compensates on the par-three sixth as he guides his iron shot into under three feet.

The American is loving that and enjoys a bit of laugh with Justin Thomas, who has found the rough between the two bunkers to the right of the dance floor.

It's a birdie for Brooks, who moves back into the top 10.

  17. Birdie for Hovlandpublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 13 June

    Hovland -2, Morikawa +2, Scheffler +5 (13*)

Viktor Hovland makes a nice birdie four on the fourth despite finding the bunker off the tee - as he escapes nicely and leaves an approach from 160 yards, which he sticks to 10 feet and obviously since he's now an expert putter today that's no problem for him to roll in for birdie.

  18. Another US Open hole-in-onepublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 13 June

That ace from Victor Perez is the 54th in US Open history and makes it the third straight year that we've had one in the tournament.

And they've been flying in over the last couple of years too, with two last year at Pinehurst and three in 2023 at Los Angeles Country Club.

It's just the second ever at Oakmont in the US Open though, with Scott Simpson getting the only other ace when he found the cup with his tee shot on the 16th in the 1983 tournament.

  19. Birdie for Burnspublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 13 June

    Burns -3 (12*)

Sam Burns has an eagle putt incoming on the fourth from a different zip code. His putt is from nearly 110 feet but he rolls up to 19 inches and then drops in his sixth birdie of the day.

This is some round from the American but you can go from being in contention to nowhere very quickly at Oakmont.

  20. Ace alert!published at 16:45 British Summer Time 13 June

    Perez +1 (15*)

Take a bow Victor Perez! The Frenchman takes on the testing front flag at the par-three sixth hole from 192 yards and only goes and sinks it for a hole-in-one!

The ball's on a great line takes a nice bounce, a second hop and the dives into the cup for an ace.

That takes Perez back to one over for the tournament after an eventful day - as he's had three birdies, two bogeys and a triple-bogey eight on his card before now being able to write down a '1'.
