Simple Verse wins Doncaster's Park Hill Stakes under Oisin Murphy

The 2015 St Leger winner Simple Verse returned to the scene of her greatest triumph with a thrilling win in the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster.

Jockey Oisin Murphy had to mount a late challenge after struggling for room before overtaking leader Pretty Perfect in the final strides.

The 3-1 shot, trained by Ralph Beckett, won by a neck, with California third.

Simple Verse was demoted after passing the post first in the Leger, but was reinstated as winner on appeal.

Beckett said the filly was likely to be aimed at the Long Distance Cup at Ascot on British Champions Day on 15 October.

Analysis - BBC racing correspondent Cornelius Lysaght:

"What a terrific horse race with a fabulous filly at the centre of it all. Simple Verse, whose last visit to Doncaster this coming weekend last year resulted in success in the St Leger, then a controversial disqualification, before reinstatement on appeal, took the prize in dramatic style, but it was the 'right kind' of drama.

"A little out of form in races over shorter distances of late, she positively stormed to victory, making up about three lengths late on. Longer distances look to be the key."
