"We are hoping and praying the next couple of days will see us bring a few in," he said. "We need to. Everyone is working hard behind the scenes. But you can't criticise what players have done, they've been wonderful.

"We need another 17 points. There's 15 games to go and we still need more than a point a game, and in the Premier League that's tough. Its a massive ask, so we wont get carried away - we can't afford too. We are pleased with the points we have so far but we can't take our foot off the pedal."

Last year's Grand National hero Auroras Encore has been retired after fracturing a leg.

The 12-year-old was a shock 66-1 winner of the Aintree feature for trainer Sue Smith and jockey Ryan Mania last April but had failed to hit the mark in three subsequent starts and suffered an injury at Doncaster last Saturday. He underwent an operation on Tuesday and has run his last race.

"He won a National for us. It doesn't get bigger than that," said Smith. "He doesn't owe us anything. This is a racing injury and I'm afraid that it is what you have to expect from the job on occasion. We have to expect these things and that's all there is to it. I just want him back to his retirement."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers on his first-ever win over Everton: "All wins are important, but especially against your rivals.
