    Former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given says the club can land a domestic treble this season, but will have to wait to win the Champions League.

    City play Barcelona in the last 16 after making it through to the knockout stages for the first time.

    BBC Sport's Chris McLaughlin: "The UK government has agreed to a request from the Scottish parliament for military assistance to help with security during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

    "Police Scotland will have overall control of security for the Games but will be assisted by a number of private security firms and the military.

    "The move is designed to avoid a repeat of the security problems at the London Olympics in 2012, when security firm G4S failed to provide enough staff. G4S will be involved in Glasgow but only in a stewarding capacity at some of the venues."

    Double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington is to mentor some of Britain's most promising swimmers in a bid to support the "next generation of medallists".

    Adlington, 24, who retired from the sport last year as Britain's most successful swimmer, will offer advice to the rising stars and their coaches.

    The six athletes from the World Class Swimming Programme who have been selected to take part are Ross Murdoch (University of Stirling), Adam Peaty (City of Derby), Lauren Quigley (Stockport Metro), Harriet Cooper (City of Derby), Jess Fullalove (City of Manchester) and Sophie Taylor (City of Leeds).

    Italy coach Jacques Brunel has opted to give Treviso winger Angelo Esposito a debut in Saturday's 6 Nations game against Wales in Cardiff.

    Veteran flanker Mauro Bergamasco will become Italy's longest serving player, overtaking the legendary Sergio Lanfranchi. The 34-year-old made his senior national team debut in 1998 but his younger brother Mirco misses out.

    Sergio Parisse will captain the side after missing the last two games of the 2013 campaign through suspension. He will earn his 102nd cap at the Millennium Stadium.

    Swansea have pulled out of the race to sign Blackpool winger Thomas Ince, reports the South Wales Evening Post., external

    Ince held talks at the Liberty Stadium on Monday but has since spoken to a number of other Premier League clubs, including Stoke and Crystal Palace.

    The England Under-21 international has been given permission by the Championship side to discuss a loan move with Premier League clubs.

    Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy holds a two-shot lead after the opening round of the Dubai Desert Classic.

    McIlroy, who was one of the early starters, carded seven birdies and an eagle to lead on nine under par, two shots ahead of Italy's Edoardo Molinari, with defending champion Stephen Gallacher among a five-strong group on six under.

    McIlroy and Gallacher played alongside Tiger Woods, who is on four under.

    West Ham have signed Ivory Coast international Abdul Razak on a short-term contract.

    The 21-year-old former Manchester City player moves from Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala.

    He joined Anzhi, initially on loan, in September 2013, and made 11 appearances for the Russian side in all competitions, including two starts against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League.

    Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery and Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema have been acquitted on charges of soliciting an underage prostitute.

    The French judge ruled there was not enough proof the men were aware that the woman involved, who is now 21, was a minor at the time.

    The two footballers, who didn't attend the trial, had faced up to three years in prison if found guilty.

    Arsene Wenger tells Arsenal's official website, external that he wants his team to focus on their own performances and not worry about what their title rivals are doing.

    The Gunners dropped two points in the race for the Premier League title after being held to a 2-2 draw at Southampton on Tuesday. "The kind of performance we delivered at Southampton will not move us forward so let's focus to come back on Sunday and produce a good performance," manager Wenger adds ahead of this weekend's home game with Crystal Palace.

    "Our future lies there, to be capable to repeat a top-level performance that demands top level-commitment in every single game. This team has commitment, character, intelligence and when we were questioned we always respond well. That's what is at stake on Sunday for us."

    Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta says the Serie A leaders are keen to sign Southampton striker Dani Osvaldo.

    Osvaldo, who is currently serving a two-week suspension as punishment for being involved in a training ground fight, is also a reported target of Spanish side Valencia.

    "We like Osvaldo and we also know that other teams like him too," Marotta tells Gazzetta dello Sport. "He is a fantastic player but before we can buy we must sell."
