    We had been told that the first two from the two heats would go through to the final, but now it looks like it is the top four competitors and Nicholls's superb second run, which scored 86.75, has earned him a place in the final.

    Massive confusion in Sochi and it appears that Britain's Jamie Nicholls is into the snowboard slopestyle final.

    So, how does the slopestyle qualification work?

    The two leading snowboarders from each of the two heats (so four in total) will go through to the finals on Saturday.

    The rest of the athletes will all return on Saturday morning to fight it out for the remaining eight places in the 12-strong final.

    Both men's and women's events will operate the same format, although the women have fewer competitors - 23 vs 28 in the men's.

    Not only have we got all of the big sports news and views, it is also the opening day of the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Action has already started with the men's snowboard slopestyle qualification while the women's qualification follows later this morning.

    There is also the figure skating men's and pairs team programme and the women's moguls qualification.
