    Southampton midfielder Gaston Ramirez is called up for Uruguay's World Cup squad for the first time in their provisional 25-man squad for Brazil.

    Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates joins him in Oscar Tabarez's squad, having been on loan at his first club Nacional this season after recovering from a knee ligament injury he picked up in England in August.

    Leicester manager Nigel Pearson won the Sky Bet Football League Championship manager of the year award, having led his side to next season's Premier League with 102 points as they finished top of the second tier.

    Kenny Jackett, who steered Wolves to the League One title, shared the division's award with Leyton Orient's Russell Slade, while Scunthorpe's Russ Wilcox was League Two manager of the year.

    Wilcox guided Scunthorpe to promotion and broke a 125-year-old Football League record for the longest undefeated run for a new manager - the Iron went 28 games without losing following his appointment.

    Sheffield United's Nigel Clough was named the FA Cup manager of the year after taking the League One side past Premier League Aston Villa and Fulham en route to the semi-finals.

    Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been named the League Managers Association manager of the year.

    The 41-year-old guided the Reds to second place in the Premier League, as well as a return to the Champions League, as they finished just two points behind Manchester City.

    "I was hoping I'd be on the open top bus tonight," said Rodgers.

    Crystal Palace boss Tony Pulis was named Premier League manager of the year.

    England boss Roy Hodgson says there is an element of risk in his decision to overlook Ashley Cole for Southampton's Luke Shaw in his World Cup squad.

    Chelsea's Cole, 33, announced his international retirement after 107 caps when Hodgson decided to take 18-year-old Shaw to Brazil.

    "Circumstances could make the decision a very good one or could make it a very bad one," said Hodgson.

    Everton's Leighton Baines, 29, will be England's first-choice left-back.

    Rio Ferdinand is to leave Manchester United in the summer after the defender was not offered a new contract.

    The 35-year-old's departure will bring to an end a 12-year stay at the club, for whom he has made 454 appearances, scoring eight goals.

    "After 12 fantastic years I have decided the time is right for me to move on," said Ferdinand.

    England's World Cup squad announced, a managerial departure, a Premier League club put up for sale and the news of the exit of a Manchester United legend. The domestic football season may be done and dusted - with the exception of the play-offs - but the sporting world shows no sign of slowing down as yesterday's hectic events proved.
