    Former Rangers, Newcastle and Birmingham striker Peter Lovenkrands has announced his retirement from football at the age of 34. He scored 91 goals for British clubs and once in 22 international appearances for Denmark.

    Paralympic champion Jonnie Peacock says he has learned lessons from his battle for form this year.

    The 21-year-old, who won T44 100m gold at London 2012, went into the season recovering from a back problem and registered his only notable victory at the European Championships.

    "It was a lesson. Coming back from my back injury was a struggle," he told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. "I lost a few races last year which was difficult for me. It was a shock, but it brings you back down to earth."

    The Daily Mail reports, external that Liverpool have offered Jordan Henderson an improved contract worth £80,000-per-week.

    Henderson, who joined Liverpool from Sunderland in 2011, has just over 18 months left to run on his existing deal - which is worth in the region of £65,000-per-week.

    But the Anfield club want to tie the England international down to new terms after fully-establishing himself as an integral member of Brendan Rodgers' first-team.

    The new deal is understood to be a five-year contract, worth just over £4m per season.

    Away from last night's international football, there were a number of FA Cup ties taking place and Conference side Southport caused an upset by beating 10-man Dagenham and Redbridge 2-0 to seal their spot in the second round.

    Manager Gary Brabin says their victory was deserved, telling BBC Radio Merseyside: "It was no fluke.

    "I thought we defended resolutely, worked hard, had some good passages of play and looked really exciting. From minute one I thought we were on the front foot, played some great stuff and in control, even against 11 men."

    England midfielder Jack Wilshere is confident that he will continue to improve in the deep-lying role given to him by Roy Hodgson.

    "It's new to me, I'm willing to learn and we've got great coaches here who are talking me through it," says the 22-year-old Arsenal player.

    "We've also got a few players here that have experienced that side of the game. So, I'm learning all the time and I'm happy. I'm going to get better and better in this role."

    Former world number one Tiger Woods has asked for an apology from veteran golf writer Dan Jenkins after being made the subject of a parody interview., external

    Jenkins, 84, who has covered golf for more than 60 years, wrote the spoof for Golf Digest, stating its fictitious nature. In it he ridiculed the 14-times major winner's failed marriage and joked that the 38-year-old enjoyed firing people and disliked paying tips.

    Woods described it as a "grudge-fuelled piece of character assassination."

    Jenkins, 84, who has reported on more than 200 majors, said he wrote the piece because he has never been granted an exclusive interview with Woods, who has not played since August because of injury.

    Roger Federer's hopes of being fully fit to play for Switzerland in Friday's opening two rubbers of the Davis Cup final against France have lessened even further when he missed training on Wednesday.

    The 17-time major winner, who has never won the Davis Cup, injured his back playing in the semi-finals of the World Tour Finals in London on Saturday.

    Since arriving in Lille on Monday he has been unable to practise on the indoor clay court the French have chosen for the final.

    Paul Cox insists he has no intention of quitting as manager of League Two strugglers Mansfield Town.

    The Stags have gone nine games without a victory and were booed following Tuesday's 1-1 draw against Conference South club Concord Rangers in the FA Cup first round.

    "People are asking me to pull rabbits out the hat. We've had to cut the cloth accordingly," Cox told BBC Radio Nottingham.

    "We've got to work hard with the youth. Just because we've had a bad run doesn't mean I'm a bad manager."

    Preston boxer Lisa Whiteside has progressed to the quarter-finals at the Women's World Boxing Championships in Jeju City, South Korea.

    Whiteside, who won world bronze at 55-57kg two years ago, beat Thailand's Sopida Satumrum in the 49-51kg division and will now take on Canadian Mandy Bujold on Friday.

    However, in the 65-69kg class, Lauren Price of Wales was beaten while Ireland's Claire Grace was forced to withdraw from her last-16 bout with a cut eye.

    On this day in 2011, South Africa-born former England all-rounder Basil D'Oliveira died at the age of 83 after a long battle against Parkinson's disease.

    D'Oliveira played 44 Tests for England after a lack of opportunities for non-white players in his home country.

    He made headlines in 1968 when he was included in the England squad for the tour of South Africa which had to be called off as the South African government refused to accept his presence.

    Ish Sodhi was the pick of New Zealand bowlers with 2-65 as his side try to level the series.

    Wigan chairman Dave Whelan believes Mackay can lead the Latics, currently third from bottom in the Championship, back to the Premier League and says that the club have nothing to hide over his appointment.

    "Malky made a mistake, he knows that, we know that and we have discussed this issue at length face to face," said Whelan. "He apologised publicly for what happened at the time and has paid for what he did in terms of the bad publicity he has received since and will no doubt continue to suffer in the future.

    "But I believe that it is now time to move on. Contrary to the way he has been portrayed in recent months, the Malky Mackay I met this week, and who has been vouched for by the many different people from whom we have sought advice before making this appointment, is an honourable man.

    "He is a committed family man with decent values and is a professional who has worked and thrived for over 20 years in the multi-cultural world of modern football. There is nothing more to say about this subject, and as far as I am concerned we draw a line under it from today."

    Mackay has been out of football since being sacked by Cardiff City last December.

    The 42-year-old Scot came close to taking over at Crystal Palace in August, only to see that possibility dashed when details emerged of text messages, sent by Mackay, which he later admitted were "disrespectful of other cultures".

    Last week, news of Mackay's potential employment prompted Wigan MP Lisa Nandy to write a letter to club chairman Dave Whelan which expressed her concerns over the Scot's link to the position.
