    Time for a look at today's BBC Gossip Column and the Daily Telegraph, external reports that Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is confident of signing Netherlands midfielder Kevin Strootman - although the move could be delayed until the summer if the 24-year-old helps Roma reach the Champions League knockout stages by beating Manchester City tonight.

    United are also thought to be in pole position to sign Benfica's £25m-rated Argentine midfielder Enzo Perez, 28, because Valencia cannot afford him, say Talksport., external

    Back to the papers, and the Independent and Telegraph have similar pictures of a downcast Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard on his haunches following his side's elimination from the Champions League. The esteemed Henry Winter in the Telegraph, external wrote: "Unlike the excellent visitors, Liverpool lacked pace and cohesion for long periods. Unlike Paulo Sousa's lively, well-organised side, Liverpool lacked a workable game-plan too. Liverpool's midfield was too similar, too one-paced."
