  1. Top 10 third round shockspublished at 21:15 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2015

    BBC Radio 5 live

Non-league heavyweights Altrincham just love the Cup. Having already held Everton and Tottenham to draws in the 1970s, they fancied their chances against a Birmingham side struggling in the top flight when they met in early 1986.

With a young David Seaman in goal, Birmingham were stunned when Kevin Ellis put the non-league side in front. Robert Hopkins quickly equalised but Altrincham fought back and scored the winner when Hopkins' misplaced pass went beyond Seaman and into his own goal, sealing the shock.

  5. FA Cup previewpublished at 21:03 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2015

    BBC Radio 5 live

Southport forward Richard Brodie, whose Conference side travel to Championship high-flyers Derby County, is hopeful that they can cause a shock at Pride Park.

"There are a lot of cliches in the FA Cup, but it is 11 v 11 and there will be a shock somewhere. We just hope it is us," says the 27-year-old, who famously almost nicked a draw for Crawley at Manchester United when he headed against the Old Trafford crossbar in 2011.

  6. FA Cup previewpublished at 20:56 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2015

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson is likely to be without midfielders Dean Hammond and Danny Drinkwater for the third round visit of Newcastle.

Hammond has a calf problem while Drinkwater came off against Liverpool on 1 January with a groin injury.

Newcastle will definitely be without Steven Taylor for the all-Premier League tie.

The defender has suffered Achilles tendon injury which may rule him out for the rest of the season.

  7. Goal!published at 20:55 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2015

Championship side Cardiff City take a huge stride towards the fourth round as Kadeem Harris hooks in the second goal for the home side. Long way back for League One strugglers Colchester now, you would imagine.

  8. Brotherly lovepublished at 20:52 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2015

    BBC Radio 5 live

Gateshead midfielder Phil Turnbull on the mood in the camp ahead of the trip to West Bromwich Albion: "It's very relaxed with the gaffer here. We eat together on the night and then it is each to your own until breakfast at 9am before we meet for a walk at 11am. I'm relaxed and think all the lads are. It's a no-lose situation for us."

And twin brother Stephen on Blyth's home match against Birmingham: "I'm very relaxed. Like Phil said about Gateshead, it is the same with us. We go into game quietly confident, the pitch isn't great, the weather isn't great and it is a no-lose situation for us too."

  9. Brotherly lovepublished at 20:46 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2015

    BBC Radio 5 live

The Turnbull brothers sound very relaxed as they discuss their big games on 5 live. Phil says he is sick of Stephen talking about Alan Shearer's praise for his winning goal against Hartlepool in the FA Cup second round last month, before Stephen reveals that he dislocated his shoulder in a fight with his brother over a football computer game!

    BBC Radio 5 live

The FA Cup tends to throw up plenty of heart-warming human interest stories and this weekend is no different. One sees twin brothers Stephen and Phil Turnbull both playing for separate non-league clubs in the third round as Stephen's Blyth Spartans host Birmingham, while Phil's Gateshead travel to West Brom.

  11. FA Cup previewpublished at 20:41 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2015

Tranmere manager Micky Adams on his struggling League Two side hosting Premier League team Swansea at Prenton Park: "Any football club at the lower end of the Football League would relish a match against a top-flight side and we're no different.

"To get to the third round we've had to win two games - and when I took over we were bottom of the Football League - so we needed any type of win. Any win breeds confidence, hopefully we won't get too distracted and take confidence from the game into our league form."

  12. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:36 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2015

In the first third-round tie of the weekend, Championship side Cardiff are in command against their League One visitors. Joe Ralls' fortuitous opener - a long-range shot which took two deflections before going in - separates the sides.

  13. Goal!published at 20:34 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2015

Chesterfield won the original tie 1-0 (fielding an ineligible player) and they lead by the same score again. Gary Roberts slides home Eoin Doyle's ball moments before half-time.

More from John Motson on the 1988 FA Cup final: "The other memory is Wimbledon keeper Dave Beasant saving a penalty from Liverpool's John Aldridge. Wimbledon was such a friendly club and you could go into the dressing room at quarter past two on a matchday and chat to the players.

"I can remember talking to Beasant a few weeks before the final about John Aldridge's penalties - because he was stopping in his run up. I asked Beasant what he would do and he said 'he's not going to out-psyche me'. Then he stopped Aldridge's penalty to become the first goalkeeper to save a penalty in an FA Cup final."

  16. FA Cup previewpublished at 20:26 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2015

    BBC Radio 5 live

BBC commentator John Motson on the 1988 FA Cup final between Liverpool and Wimbledon: "Before the match, and this is easy to say 25 years later, I remember thinking that I hadn't ruled Wimbledon out.

"They were seventh in the First Division - this wasn't a team from the Fourth Division. I remember going to Plough Lane a couple of weeks before final and Dennis Wise took a corner and Lawrie Sanchez nodded in at near post. And that's what happened on the day."

  17. Goal!published at 20:20 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2015

You can watch that game on this page in the UK - and we will have a clip of that goal soon.

Can he keep West Brom up? Will he have final say on transfers? Two of the key questions put to new West Brom boss Tony Pulis as he met the media for the first time today.

But, among other questions, BBC Sport's Pat Murphy asked the one we all want to know - has Pulis got an Albion baseball cap sorted yet?

"They've brought me a couple of caps for me to have a look at but, as you know Pat, I'm the Manager of the Year so my head's too big at the moment," joked the Welshman.
