    Derby County are poised to sign out-of-favour Aston Villa striker Darren Bent on loan until the end of the season, reports BBC Radio Derby.

    The 30-year-old England international has just ended a loan spell at Brighton, where he scored two goals in four games, but had said he was open to a longer deal with the Seagulls.

    He is due to hold talks with Rams head coach Steve McClaren on Friday and could make his Rams debut against former club Ipswich on 10 January.

    Away from football and over to the oche briefly where defending champion Michael van Gerwen and fourth seed Gary Anderson are into the semi-finals of the PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace after winning their quarter-finals on Thursday.

    This evening, the remaining semi-finalists will be decided with 16-time champion Phil Taylor up against Dutchman Vincent van der Voort while Raymond van Barneveld takes on BDO champion Stephen Bunting.

    Staying with the FA Cup and Cardiff and Colchester kick off the third round action tonight with the game live on BBC Two Wales and also on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra.

    Cardiff boss Russell Slade is set to make a number of changes to his starting XI with midfielder Anthony Pilkington fit again after a hamstring injury.

    League One side Colchester will be without striker Rhys Healey, who is ineligible by the terms of his loan deal from the Bluebirds while defender Ben Gordon is a doubt after picking up a knock during Sunday's 0-0 draw at Crawley.

    Back in time to January 1986 for our fifth in John Motson's top 10 FA Cup third round upsets and the tale of non-league Altrincham's defeat of top flight Birmingham City.

    The non-leaguers went to St Andrew's to face a struggling Blues outfit, but pulled off a memorable shock by scoring twice past a young goalkeeper named David Seaman.

    "What has happened here tonight has been coming for the last two years," Birmingham boss Ron Saunders said after the game. "I hope this result shakes things up and I can get some money from the board."

    What happened next was Saunders lost his job.

    A man has been charged by police after allegedly confronting Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger at the end of their 2-0 defeat at Southampton on Thursday.

    Luke Bryant, 25, of Bankhill Drive, Lymington, Hampshire, was arrested and subsequently charged with an offence of going on to an area adjacent to the playing area contrary to the Football (Offences) Act 1991, and will appear at Southampton Magistrates' Court on 22 January.

    The arrest came after a fan was seen to run with his arms outstretched in front of the Gunners' boss as he sat in the dugout late on in the game.

    Footage showed the man being bundled away down the tunnel by two stewards as Wenger held his arm out in apparent frustration at the intruder.

    It's been a day of mixed fortunes for two English players in Australia's Big Bash Twenty20 competition.

    England and Nottinghamshire batsman Alex Hales scored 34 as his Hobart Hurricanes side beat Andrew Flintoff's Brisbane Heat by six wickets.

    Flintoff was unable to prevent the Hurricanes from chasing 209 to win as he took 1-28 from his two overs.

    Derby County head coach Steve McClaren says he is no longer flattered by being linked with top management roles, amid speculation about him succeeding Alan Pardew as Newcastle boss.

    "I'm past all that. I used to [be flattered] when I was younger," the former England boss told BBC Radio Derby. "I realise it is part of the game, but it's pure speculation."

    The Rams, currently third in the Championship table, take on non-league Southport in the FA Cup on Saturday.

    Dean Court, Bournemouth in 1984 is the destination for the fourth of John Motson's top 10 FA Cup third round shocks.

    When the Cherries were drawn to face holders Manchester United, managed by Ron Atkinson, few people, if anyone, gave the struggling Third Division side much chance of causing an upset.

    But led by the then young and inexperienced boss Harry Redknapp, they produced one of the biggest shocks in the tournament's history.

    Goals from Milton Graham (pictured above) and Ian Thompson catapulted the underdogs to a 2-0 victory.

    Some Rugby Union news now and Scarlets and Wales lock Jake Ball has become the sixth player to sign a national dual contract with the Welsh Rugby Union and his regional team.

    The 23-year-old, who has won eight caps after making his Test debut during last season's Six Nations Championship, joins Wales captain Sam Warburton, Dan Lydiate, Rhodri Jones, Hallam Amos and Tyler Morgan in putting pen to paper, the WRU and Welsh regions announced.

    "Oh, what a goal! What a goal! Radford the scorer... and the crowd are invading the pitch," screamed an excitable 26-year-old Motson as the game went into extra time.

    Ricky George then took centre stage with the extra-time winner to ensure Hereford went on to have the last laugh and Newcastle went out.

    Staying with cricket and England and Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes has signed for the Melbourne Renegades in Australia's Big Bash League.

    Stokes, 23, will replace injured New Zealand international Jesse Ryder in the Renegades' squad for the remainder of the Twenty20 competition, starting with next Wednesday's game against the Hobart Hurricanes.

    The West Indies have won the toss and after deciding to bat in the third and final Test against South Africa in Cape Town are 80-2 at lunch.

    Both teams made one change following the rain-affected second Test in Port Elizabeth with South Africa leading the series 1-0.

    South African off-spinner Simon Harmer claimed his first Test wicket after he dismissed Devon Smith with the final ball before lunch.

    At number two on John Motson's top 10 FA Cup third round upsets is a giant killing from 1959.

    Liverpool, then of the Second Division, suffered arguably one of their most embarrassing defeats when they lost to non-league Worcester City 2-1.

    The tie at St George's Lane was originally postponed because of a severe cold snap and rescheduled for 15 January when businesses in the city of Worcester had their weekly early closing day.

    Teenager Tommy Skuse gave the hosts a shock lead after nine minutes and Dick White's own goal made it 2-0 with nine minutes left to play.

    Liverpool did pull a goal back, but they couldn't force an equaliser and the national newspapers revelled in the giant killing - some of the next day's headlines included "What Sauce," "Saucy Worcester" and "Worcester too Hot for Liverpool".

    Gloucester have announced that their England number eight Ben Morgan has signed a new contract at Kingsholm.

    Morgan follows his fellow England internationals Jonny May and Matt Kvesic in agreeing fresh terms with the Premiership club.

    The 25-year-old forward, who joined Gloucester in 2012, has won 27 caps, and was named man of the series for his performances during England's recent autumn Tests.

    Current Liverpool players have been reacting to the news of Steven Gerrard's decision to leave the club at the end of the season.

    Striker Rickie Lambert told the club's website: "Stevie is his own man but he is Mr Liverpool. He is No.1 for me and I think he always will be. He has meant everything to me growing up as a Liverpool fan. The nights he has given Liverpool fans are unbelievable. I'll never forget them and I know the Liverpool fans will never forget them."

    Striker Mario Balotelli said: "I think of him as being at the same level as Pirlo. Vision, technique but he is powerful as well. Steven can do anything, he is an amazing player. It's going to be very difficult for the team to find another player like him in the future."

    First up on our list of Top 10 FA Cup third-round moments comes from 1933.

    When struggling Third Division side Walsall turned over Arsenal 2-0, English football was shocked.

    Herbert Chapman's Gunners had already won the FA Cup in 1930 and the league in 1931. Between 1933 and 1938, they would go on to win another four league titles and one cup.
