The 10cm tall, octagonal piece of semi-precious lapis lazuli carries the names of the first four World Cup winners: Uruguay and Italy each won twice between 1930 and 1950. The trophy got a new base before the 1954 tournament.

The gold statuette was given to Brazil after its third title in 1970. It was stolen in 1983 and never recovered.

They have an absolutely brilliant player, one of the very best in the world, who would without any doubt play 90 minutes of the match, every time, with any other club.

"The truth is, right now we don't know what will happen. What we do know is that he will play in one of the very best clubs in the world next season, whether that is Manchester United or not."

    Football

    BBC Radio 5 live

Daily Telegraph's Henry Winter also said he would be asking England boss Roy Hodgson why he voted for Javier Mascherano in the Ballon d'Or ballot.

Hodgson has raised eyebrows after deciding not to vote for winner Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.

"To be kind, I hope Hodgson was sending out a message to English football that we need to develop holding midfielders who also take responsibility, which Mascherano did at the World Cup," says Winter. "He was brilliant at the World Cup, but I wouldn't have had him in my top 10."

  67. 'Straightforward vote for Ronaldo'

    Football

    BBC Radio 5 live

Daily Telegraph's chief football writer Henry Winter voted for Cristiano Ronaldo at the Ballon d'Or award. He has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 live about his top three choices.

"It was a great privilege to vote and it was fairly straightforward voting for Ronaldo," he says. This was a slightly nearly year for Messi."

Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman says club owner Vincent Tan is "open to the idea" of having a fans' representative on the board following the return to the traditional blue kit.

On Friday, Malaysian businessman Tan removed the red home strip he introduced in 2012 in the wake of a record low crowd at the Cardiff City Stadium for the FA Cup third-round tie with Colchester and planned supporters' protests in the new year over the club's controversial rebranding exercise.

"Vincent is open to the idea," Dalman said about the possibility of supporters being represented on the Cardiff board. "We have already made some bridges and I think this decision (returning kit colour to blue) will help us us get there much faster."

  73. Messi wins Twitter war

    Football

    Lionel Messi

A few facts for you now, fact fans.

Apparently, while Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or last night, Lionel Messi would have been crowned the 2014 winner if Twitter chatter - and not silly votes - was the determining factor.

Data provided to BBC Sport by Twitter shows that were more than 54m tweets related to Messi in 2014, with Ronaldo managing a mere 40m mentions. Manuel Neuer - third in the vote - brought up the rear on 6.3m.

Meanwhile, James Rodriguez may have won goal of the year, but the goal that created the largest spike in conversation on Twitter during 2014 was Robin Van Persie's header against Spain, which came third in Fifa's vote.

Joachim Low won coach of the year after guiding Germany to World Cup glory, but it was Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti who was the most-discussed coach on Twitter.

  78. Your views on Hodgson's Ballon d'Or top three

Roy Hodgson's selection of Javier Mascherano as his best player of 2014 has certainly sparked a debate. Here's some more of your responses. Please keep them coming.

Amin Elhassan: "A good tackle in the final third can mean a difference between a Champions League-winning season and a trophy-less season. Mascherano almost won Argentina the biggest prize in world football with his tackles, so yes, I can see where Roy Hodgson is coming from."

Adam Jepson "Nevermind the fact that he's wrong. Ronaldo is the most astonishingly good player in any position. There is no defender defended better than Ronaldo has attacked. Simple as."

Karl Brown "The man hasn't got a clue! Mascherano the world's best player! Haha! Don't get me wrong, he's good, but he won nothing last season. For people that don't have Ronaldo and Messi in the first three then you might as well stop watching football because you don't understand it."

Tim Watson: "Were people not saying during the World Cup that to be considered a great player you have to win the World Cup? So picking two World Cup winners and a player that had an outstanding tournament is fair enough to me."

  90. Hodgson's choice

We threw a handful of comments in support of Roy Hodgson's Ballon d'Or picks at you a little earlier, so as we're the BBC and we like balance and wotnot, here's the counter view from some of our Twitter followers.

Sahil Oberoi: "Are the pro Hodgson comments for real? It's not just the goals, the overall raw talent separates Ronaldo/Messi from the rest."

Andrew Priestley: "Just what was Roy Hodgson thinking by selecting Javier Mascherano as his number one choice? It sums up his football philosophy."

Matt G: "Not one attacking player... sums up his mindset. Bloke really is clueless about modern football. Stuck in dark ages."

Alex Smith: Hodgson voted for Mascherano for the Ballon D'Or? Not even Mrs Mascherano would have voted for Mr Mascherano!"

Donald: "This is why we will never win the World Cup when we have managers like Hodgson. His choices amaze me."

  94. Hodgson joins Capello in maverick move

    Football

    Roy Hodgson and Fabio Capello

England boss Roy Hodgson may not have swum with the tide with his Ballon d'Or selections this year, but for the last two years he was very much in step with the rest of the game, picking Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013 and Lionel Messi in 2012.

Our chums at Press Association Sport have trawled back through the archive to see how Hodgson and his predecessor Fabio Capello have voted since the inaugural Ballon d'Or in 2010, and - Maicon and Mascherano aside - there's little here to raise eyebrows.

2010: Fabio Capello: First: Andres Iniesta. Second: Xavi. Third: Maicon.

2011: Fabio Capello: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney.

2012: Roy Hodgson: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Radamel Falcao.

2013: Roy Hodgson: Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robin van Persie.

2014 Roy Hodgson: Javier Mascherano, Philipp Lahm, Manuel Neuer.

  95. Ronaldo backing for 'Gaz' Bale

    Football

    Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale

Fresh from his Ballon d'Or success, a benevolent Cristiano Ronaldo has urged Real Madrid fans to go easy on "key player" Gareth Bale.

The Wales international came under fire for going for goal instead of passing to Ronaldo for an easy tap-in during Saturday's league win over Espanyol.

Ronaldo was visibly angry after the incident, but told reporters last night: "I think the things with Gaz are normal because the fans know that Gaz is a very important player for us, a key player.

"What happened on Saturday is in the past, sometimes I make mistakes too so it's part of the business, part of football. I think the people will be nice with him and they should be nice with him."

  97. Roy Hodgson's Ballon d'Or top three

We asked for your views on Roy Hodgson's top three selection of Mascherano, Lahm and Neuer. Please keep them coming on Twitter using #bbcsportsday and on the BBC Sport Facebook page.

Here's some of your Facebook responses so far:

Simon Herring: "I think Roy has a point. It's to choose the best player in world. Is Messi better than a defensive midfielder because he scores goals? Well of course he scores goals but the defensive midfielder isn't there to score goals but he could be amazing at what he supposed to do. Can't compare players from different positions.... it would be better at asking what's better, a tractor or a car? A car better on roads... a tractor miles better on a farm."

Sean Walls: "Yes it's exciting watching Ronaldo and Messi but Roy's choices... Lahm, what a fantastic all-round intelligent player he is, probably the most versatile player with such ability. Mascherano, a leader of men, clearly organized the Argentinean defensive side of things brilliantly at the World Cup, a better version of Matic who everyone's praising. Neuer, need I say anything? Best goalkeeper in the world, the amount of times he intercepted a long ball over the top in behind the German defence in the World Cup was inhumane! I can see where Roy's coming from is what I'm trying to say."

Tino Wilfred: "No point having Messi up top with Lee Cattermole holding midfield is it? Hodgson is completely right in his choices."

Adam Hughes: "In my opinion it is good that Roy Hodgson, other captains, head coaches and members of the media are giving defensive players recognition. However, Ronaldo has been sublime this year so I don't think anybody can argue that he isn't the best player in the world."

  98. Giles Clarke to step down as ECB chairman

    BBC Radio 5 live

This from BBC Radio 5 Live's Pat Murphy:

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is expected to confirm today that Giles Clarke is stepping down as its chairman after eight years and being replaced by the Yorkshire chairman Colin Graves.

It comes as counties are looking for greater authority in decision-making at Lord's, with many feeling that the national team's interests dominate the agenda. One of Graves' challenges will be to see if cricket can return to terrestrial TV, probably via the Twenty-20 format.

As for Clarke, it's expected he'll now take on the role of ECB president - liaising between the ECB and ICC, and it won't impact on any decision-making at Lord's. Clarke will also continue his role as chairman of the ICC's finance and commercial affairs committee, and will now look at worldwide sponsorship issues.

  99. Lionel Messi unsure on future

    Lionel Messi

Another big story emerging from the Ballon d'Or awards on Monday night was Lionel Messi's admission that his future could lie away from Barcelona, amid speculation that a move to the Premier League could be on the cards.

The Barcelona forward told a news conference: "I don't know where I'll be next year."

The Argentina captain, 27, had dismissed speculation linking him with a move as "lies" at the weekend but last night said "nobody knows what the future holds".

  101. Roy Hodgson's top three - have your say

So, well done to everyone who picked up a gong last night.

However, Roy Hodgson has attracted much of the attention on social media after the England boss omitted Ronaldo and Messi from his top three in the vote.

Instead, Hodgson named former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano as his pick for the world's best player of 2014, ahead of Germany duo Philipp Lahm and Neuer.

Hodgson was one of just two coaches to put Mascherano in top spot - the other being Belarus boss Andrei Zygmantovitch.

So, we want your thoughts on why Hodgson voted the way he did? Is he right to opt for graft over flair, or does his selection suggest an error of judgement?

Let us know via #bbcsportsday or on the BBC Sport Facebook page.

  102. Kessler, Rodriguez also recognised

    James Rodriguez

In other awards dished out at by Fifa last night, Wolfsburg and Germany midfielder Nadine Kessler was named women's player of the year, while Colombia's James Rodriguez won goal of the year, edging out Ireland's Stephanie Roche.

Germany's World Cup winner Joachim Low won men's coach of the year.

Wolfsburg boss Ralf Kellermann was named women's football coach of the year after a successful defence of the Champions League.

The three candidates for the Ballon d'Or were all picked in the team of the year, along with defenders Philipp Lahm, David Luiz, Thiago Silva and Sergio Ramos, midfielders Andres Iniesta, Toni Kroos and Angel Di Maria and forward Arjen Robben.

Click here for a full breakdown of the winners and voting.

  103. Ronaldo on top of the world...again

    Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi

So, as we said earlier, Real Madrid and Portugal sensation Cristiano Ronaldo has successfully defended his world player of the year status, earning 37.66% of all votes cast by his footballing peers.

Lionel Messi - who won four years in a row until Ronaldo beat him last year, was second on 15.76%, the Barcelona and Argentina playmaker only just ahead of Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who had 15.72%.

"I would like to thank all of those who voted for me, my president, my coach and Real Madrid," said Ronaldo. "It has been an unforgettable year. To win this trophy at the end of it is something incredibly unique."

  104. Robertson and Maguire progress

    Neil Robertson

Stephen Maguire and Neil Robertson are into the last eight at the Masters after each earned a 6-4 win at Alexandra Palace last night.

Judd Trump, among the favourites after reaching last month's UK Championship final, capitulated against Maguire having won the first two frames.

World number one Robertson was made to work hard against Robert Milkins after losing the opening frame.

  105. Dundee United up to third

    Football

Dundee United climbed above Hamilton and Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Premiership table after a 3-2 win at Accies last night.

United took a two-goal lead through Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven at New Douglas Park but Hamilton - playing their first match since the departure of manager Alex Neil to Norwich - levelled through Jesus Garcia Tena and Ali Crawford.

However, Sean Dillon rose unmarked to head in a corner 13 minutes from the end to seal the win for United.

  106. Anderson reveals doubts after Phillip Hughes's death

    Cricket

    James Anderson

We'll start with England bowler James Anderson, who has told BBC Radio 5 live that he was plagued by "doubts" about bowling in the wake of Phillip Hughes's death.

Australia batsman Hughes died in November after being struck by a short-pitched delivery.

"In the week after, I was having huge doubts about how I'd go about bowling and whether I'd want to bowl the short ball," Anderson said.

  107. First things first

But before we wade in to all things Ballon d'Or, let's take a look at some of the other big stories to emerge since last we were with you...

  108. Good morning

So the Ballon d'Or is done for another year, and for the third time it is Cristiano Ronaldo who emerges with the honour of being crowned The Best Player on the Planet.

We'll have all the reaction from a glitzy evening in Zurich, including Lionel Messi's admission that his future could lie away from Barcelona. Maybe.

We'll ruminate on England boss Roy Hodgson's decision to omit both Ronaldo and Messi from his top three in the voting ballot, plus we'll keep across all the latest breaking transfer news and the build-up to four FA Cup third-round replays tonight.
