BBC Sport's Pat Murphy says Aston Villa are still hopeful of signing Spanish attacking midfielder Carles Gil today. A press conference which was scheduled for 13:00 GMT has been postponed because of a last-minute hitch over fees to the 21-year-old's agent.

Gil, 21, has played once for Spain Under 21s and has been monitored by Villa manager Paul Lambert for some time.

German Bundesliga side Mainz have rejected an £8m bid from the Foxes for the 28-year-old.

Okazaki told BBC Sport: "For the time being that's finished for me. I will stop thinking about it. "I'm a Mainz player and for now I want to focus on the Asian Cup."

  11. Hodgson's choicepublished at 09:58 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2015

We threw a handful of comments in support of Roy Hodgson's Ballon d'Or picks at you a little earlier, so as we're the BBC and we like balance and wotnot, here's the counter view from some of our Twitter followers.

Sahil Oberoi: "Are the pro Hodgson comments for real? It's not just the goals, the overall raw talent separates Ronaldo/Messi from the rest."

Andrew Priestley: "Just what was Roy Hodgson thinking by selecting Javier Mascherano as his number one choice? It sums up his football philosophy."

Matt G: "Not one attacking player... sums up his mindset. Bloke really is clueless about modern football. Stuck in dark ages."

Alex Smith: Hodgson voted for Mascherano for the Ballon D'Or? Not even Mrs Mascherano would have voted for Mr Mascherano!"

Donald: "This is why we will never win the World Cup when we have managers like Hodgson. His choices amaze me."

  15. Hodgson joins Capello in maverick movepublished at 09:37 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2015

Roy Hodgson and Fabio CapelloImage source, Getty Images

England boss Roy Hodgson may not have swum with the tide with his Ballon d'Or selections this year, but for the last two years he was very much in step with the rest of the game, picking Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013 and Lionel Messi in 2012.

Our chums at Press Association Sport have trawled back through the archive to see how Hodgson and his predecessor Fabio Capello have voted since the inaugural Ballon d'Or in 2010, and - Maicon and Mascherano aside - there's little here to raise eyebrows.

2010: Fabio Capello: First: Andres Iniesta. Second: Xavi. Third: Maicon.

2011: Fabio Capello: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney.

2012: Roy Hodgson: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Radamel Falcao.

2013: Roy Hodgson: Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robin van Persie.

2014 Roy Hodgson: Javier Mascherano, Philipp Lahm, Manuel Neuer.

Fresh from his Ballon d'Or success, a benevolent Cristiano Ronaldo has urged Real Madrid fans to go easy on "key player" Gareth Bale.

The Wales international came under fire for going for goal instead of passing to Ronaldo for an easy tap-in during Saturday's league win over Espanyol.

Ronaldo was visibly angry after the incident, but told reporters last night: "I think the things with Gaz are normal because the fans know that Gaz is a very important player for us, a key player.

"What happened on Saturday is in the past, sometimes I make mistakes too so it's part of the business, part of football. I think the people will be nice with him and they should be nice with him."

Great Britain's Heather Watson beat American fifth seed Sloane Stephens in straight sets to reach the Hobart International quarter-finals.

The 22-year-old won 6-3 6-1 in 64 minutes and looked in impressive form ahead of the Australian Open, which starts on 19 January.

Watson, who faces Italian ninth seed Roberta Vinci next, said: "This is how I want to play consistently."

  18. Roy Hodgson's Ballon d'Or top threepublished at 09:11 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2015

We asked for your views on Roy Hodgson's top three selection of Mascherano, Lahm and Neuer. Please keep them coming on Twitter using #bbcsportsday and on the BBC Sport Facebook page.

Here's some of your Facebook responses so far:

Simon Herring: "I think Roy has a point. It's to choose the best player in world. Is Messi better than a defensive midfielder because he scores goals? Well of course he scores goals but the defensive midfielder isn't there to score goals but he could be amazing at what he supposed to do. Can't compare players from different positions.... it would be better at asking what's better, a tractor or a car? A car better on roads... a tractor miles better on a farm."

Sean Walls: "Yes it's exciting watching Ronaldo and Messi but Roy's choices... Lahm, what a fantastic all-round intelligent player he is, probably the most versatile player with such ability. Mascherano, a leader of men, clearly organized the Argentinean defensive side of things brilliantly at the World Cup, a better version of Matic who everyone's praising. Neuer, need I say anything? Best goalkeeper in the world, the amount of times he intercepted a long ball over the top in behind the German defence in the World Cup was inhumane! I can see where Roy's coming from is what I'm trying to say."

Tino Wilfred: "No point having Messi up top with Lee Cattermole holding midfield is it? Hodgson is completely right in his choices."

Adam Hughes: "In my opinion it is good that Roy Hodgson, other captains, head coaches and members of the media are giving defensive players recognition. However, Ronaldo has been sublime this year so I don't think anybody can argue that he isn't the best player in the world."

  19. Giles Clarke to step down as ECB chairmanpublished at 09:01 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2015

    BBC Radio 5 live

This from BBC Radio 5 Live's Pat Murphy:

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is expected to confirm today that Giles Clarke is stepping down as its chairman after eight years and being replaced by the Yorkshire chairman Colin Graves.

It comes as counties are looking for greater authority in decision-making at Lord's, with many feeling that the national team's interests dominate the agenda. One of Graves' challenges will be to see if cricket can return to terrestrial TV, probably via the Twenty-20 format.

As for Clarke, it's expected he'll now take on the role of ECB president - liaising between the ECB and ICC, and it won't impact on any decision-making at Lord's. Clarke will also continue his role as chairman of the ICC's finance and commercial affairs committee, and will now look at worldwide sponsorship issues.

Another big story emerging from the Ballon d'Or awards on Monday night was Lionel Messi's admission that his future could lie away from Barcelona, amid speculation that a move to the Premier League could be on the cards.

The Barcelona forward told a news conference: "I don't know where I'll be next year."

The Argentina captain, 27, had dismissed speculation linking him with a move as "lies" at the weekend but last night said "nobody knows what the future holds".
