  1. Goodnight

Thanks for joining us on an epic 14-and-a-half-hour Sportsday. It's only nine and a half hours until it all starts again.

See you then. Well I won't, I'll be asleep.

  2. Post update

Discuss the best January signing on the BBC MOTD Facebook page.

Rian Hoskins: Hard to judge yet but Elia had an eye catching performance against Newcastle so probably him so far in the Premier League.

  3. Text us on 81111

Muhammad, Birmingham: Liverpool need to sign Asmir Begovic and Gonzalo Higuain. Gettable targets.

  4. Schurrle on his way home?

    Andre Schurrle

Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle has agreed personal terms with Wolfsburg, according to Sky Sports 'sources'.

Second-placed Wolfsburg get the Bundesliga back under way after the winter break against leaders and champions Bayern Munich tomorrow.

  5. Post update

    Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman will have surgery on his knee.

The 24-year-old perennial Manchester United target has played six league games since returning in November after the injury which forced him to miss the World Cup.

"There's a lot of speculation in the media about me and I would like to explain to all the fans what the real problem is," the Netherlands player said on Twitter.

"In the match v Fiorentina I got a knock on my left knee. It's bruised and therefore I should rest my knee for a couple of weeks.

"This gives me the opportunity to remove some scar tissue which has bothered me a bit after the last surgery and this will help me further in getting back to my old level.

"It's nothing serious and I will be back on the pitch as soon as possible."

  6. Celtic lack respect for Rangers - Smith

    Celtic striker John Guidetti

Ex-Rangers manager Walter Smith is not happy with Celtic striker John Guidetti's hat-trick hopes for Sunday's League Cup semi-final.

It is the first match between the Glasgow rivals since Rangers' problems three years ago.

Guidetti, on loan from Manchester City, has not scored since November but "fancied three goals" against Rangers at Hampden.

Smith told BBC Sport: "Rangers will have a respect for Celtic. I'm not so sure Celtic are showing the same respect, with some of the comments their players are making.

"A few years ago the games would have been much tighter in terms of how everybody's perception of how the game is going to be. But I don't think you can turn round and disrespect your opponents by saying you're going to score three."

  7. Post update

    Joel Campbell

I told you an hour ago that Villarreal beat Getafe in the Copa del Rey quarter-final to set up a semi-final clash with Barcelona.

What I didn't tell you is that Joel Campbell made his Yellow Submarine debut following his loan switch from Arsenal.

It's the first time Villarreal have ever reached the last four of the Spanish Cup.

  8. Red Devils to go big for centre-back

    Aymeric Laporte

Manchester United will make "one last big push" to sign either Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, 26, or 20-year-old Athletic Bilbao centre-back Aymeric Laporte, according to ESPN FC.

  9. Dixon seal of approval

    Gabriel Paulista

Former Arsenal right-back Lee Dixon thinks Gabriel Paulista will be a success at the club.

The 24-year-old Brazilian (Gabriel not Dixon) cost £11.2m from Villarreal and can play at centre-back of right-back.

"There is no doubt an experienced player who has been at Villarreal will be an asset in that department," Dixon added.

"The bits I have seen of him, he certainly has all of the attributes to adapt to the Premier League - he is very aggressive, is brave and relatively quick, so I think he will be a big asset."

  10. Magic of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy

    Matt Smith

BBC Sport's Caroline Chapman at Ashton Gate: "Bristol City's seven-year wait for a Wembley trip has come to an end - they've reached the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final for a fifth time.

"They made it 5-3 on aggregate against Gillingham - 1-1 on the night - but it wasn't as simple as they'd hoped.

"Despite sitting 23 points behind them in League One, Gillingham looked pushed their opponents to the bitter end - including six minutes of extra time.

"But it was City's night, and they will now be playing Walsall under the famous arch on 22 March."

  11. Vote results

    Carles Gil

    Your vote results are in...

Aston Villa's Carles Gil is the best Premier League signing this month, say 18.47% of you.

Wilfried Bony to Manchester City is second and Arsenal signing Gabriel Paulista is third. Full results are available on the right side of this page on the desktop site and in a tab at the top on mobile devices.

Kyle Naughton to Swansea was bottom with 2.18% of the vote.

  12. Text us on 81111

Tom Peters: Gutted to see Crouchy get a new deal at Stoke, would have loved to have seen him up front with Defoe again at Sunderland! Lethal front two!

  13. Seize De Gea

    David De Gea

Real Madrid are happy to wait 18 months and sign Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea for free, rather than pay £40m for him now - according to the Daily Telegraph.

The piece says: "But while European champions Real have identified the 24-year-old as the long-term successor to Iker Casillas, manager Carlo Ancelotti is understood to be happy to retain Casillas and second-choice Keylor Navas as his goalkeeping options next season."

De Gea could talk to Real about a pre-contract this time next year.

  14. Hammers defiant over Sakho

    Diafra Sakho

West Ham are confident they will not be punished for playing striker Diafra Sakho when he pulled out of the Africa Cup of Nations through injury.

The 25-year-old pulled out of his country's squad and Senegal were then told he could not fly out to Africa for assessment.

He played in Sunday's game against Bristol City, scoring the only goal, three days before his country were knocked out of the tournament.

Fifa rules say a player cannot play for a club if he was meant to be on international duty.

But Allardyce - who either knows more or less than we do - said: "We've stuck to every rule and regulation in the book. I'm not worried at all that he could be facing a ban whatsoever."

  15. Dundee United want £2.5m for Armstrong

    Stuart Armstrong

Burnley and Celtic have had offers of over £1m rejected by Dundee United for midfielder Stuart Armstrong.

Celtic's offer for the uncapped 22-year-old is around £1.5m, with Burnley's believed to be slightly less.

The Tangerines think he's worth £2.5m.

  16. Put a Cork in it

    Jack Cork
Image caption: "YES!!! Swansea want to sign me."

Swansea City have agreed a fee with Southampton for midfielder Jack Cork.

The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, although he has been offered a new one, but would be available on the cheap if he decided to leave.

  17. Post update

Here's some more potential Premier League signings you might have missed today...

  18. Your transfer hopes on #bbcsportsday

James Rickman: Wycombe need a striker and creative midfielder. Gareth Ainsworth doing wonders with the smallest squad, but need more goals.

  19. New contracts at Stoke

    Glenn Whelan and Peter Crouch

Stoke City pair Peter Crouch and Glenn Whelan have signed two-year contract extensions with the club.

Both striker Crouch, 33, and midfielder Whelan, 31, would have been out of contract this summer.

Crouch is still Stoke's record signing at £10 million. He has scored 37 goals in 140 appearances for Stoke.

Republic of Ireland international Whelan has played for the club since their Football League days and has scored eight goals in 248 games.

  20. Best transfers so far

If you're one of the billion people who use Facebook, join the debate on the BBC Match of the Day page.

Steve Hutchinson: John Brayford to Sheffield United

Van Ilt Turrell: Gabriel to Arsenal, his speed will do Arsenal good

Ash Fowkes: Darren Bent for Derby

King Terry Carter: Adam Forshaw to Boro... two years time that £2.5m valuation will have increased beyond belief.

  21. Morrison shows off new shirt

    Football

    Ravel Morrison

There is nothing official yet on Ravel Morrison's move from West Ham to Lazio, but the player himself gave us all a big clue earlier today.

He has posted this picture on Instagram. Looks like the transfer will happen soon.

  22. Following in Gazza's footsteps

    Football

West Ham midfielder Ravel Morrison has travelled to Italy with his club's consent in order to sign a pre-contract agreement with Lazio.

It had been reported that the Hammers had blocked the former Manchester United player, 21, from making the trip.

    Ravel Morrison

However, it is understood the delay was down to training commitments.

If Morrison signs, he would become the first Englishman to play for Lazio since Paul Gascoigne's spell with the Italian club from 1992 to 1995.

  23. Villarreal set up Barca clash

    Gerard Moreno

Villarreal will play Barcelona in the Spanish Cup semi-final after beating Getafe 1-0 for a 2-0 aggregate triumph.

Forward Gerard Moreno scored the only goal of the second leg.

Athletic Bilbao and Malaga have just kicked off, as have Sevilla and Espanyol.

  24. Your transfer hopes on #bbcsportsday

    Raphael Varane

Ryan Williams: I feel after Chelsea sign Juan Cuadrado, we should look at Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba next, two young French stars who would make us more solid.

  25. Destination Milan for Destro

    Mattia Destro

There's been a second transfer, this one has an Italian flavour.

AC Milan have signed 23-year-old striker Mattia Destro from Roma. Italian media say it is a loan deal with an option to buy.

"It's been a wonderful welcome," he said after he was met by chief executive Adriano Galliani and they were escorted off a train station platform by police, who were on hand to keep the gathering crowd, which included fans, photographers and cameramen, at bay.

  26. Your transfer hopes on 81111

Marc: As a Blackpool supporter we have signed 49 players already this season, I think 11 more quality signings would make a massive difference to our season.

  27. Kayal moves to Seagulls

    Beram Kayal

Big news readers. There's been a transfer. A confirmed transfer.

Brighton have signed Israeli midfielder Beram Kayal from Celtic following a work permit hearing.

The 26-year-old made 131 appearances for the Scottish champions but moves down to England for an undisclosed fee.

  28. Robins on the verge of Wemb-glee

It's Bristol City 1-1 Gillingham at half-time in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy area final second leg.

BBC Sport's Caroline Chapman is at Ashton Gate: "The 5-3 aggregate advantage may suggest Bristol City have got this in the bag, but it's all a bit nervy here for the hosts.

"They took the lead on the night through another Matt Smith header - his seventh goal in three games against Gillingham.

"But Jermaine McGlashan levelled the score at half-time, restoring the Gills' glimmer of hope, and They finished the half in the ascendancy.

"They couldn't 'do a Bradford' and turn around an unlikely scoreline, could they?"

  29. Your transfer hopes on #bbcsportsday

    Marc Andre Ter-Stegen

Callum Jones: Liverpool need to go out and try and get Marc Andre Ter-Stegen on loan as he is not getting playing time at Barcelona.

Sam Uddin: I believe Arsenal should sign Edinson Cavani and a strong holding midfielder like William Carvalho.

  30. Snowy in Stoke

    Football

    Port Vale snow

BBC Radio Stoke's Lee Blakeman posted this picture earlier of a weather-stricken Vale Park on Twitter.

Judging by this it is probably a good thing Vale are away at Barnsley this weekend.

  31. Upson close to comeback - Pearson

    Football

    Leicester manager Nigel Pearson

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson has revealed Matt Upson's injury nightmare is over and he is ready to make his Foxes return.

The defender is yet to play for Pearson after suffering a foot injury immediately after joining the club from Brighton in the summer and although he may still sit out Saturday's Premier League trip to Manchester United but Pearson expects him to make his bow imminently.

"Upson is more or less available now which is very positive for us, he's got a lot of experience," he said.

"Hopefully once Matt gets on the pitch he can do what he set out to do. It's been frustrating for the lad too. I'm delighted I have someone of his ability and experience becoming available for an important stage of the season."

  32. Have your say on the MOTD Facebook page

You can tell us who your club need to buy on the BBC Match of the Day Facebook page.

Suraj Belmont: Bony for sure. Winds are getting colder in Manchester, so they need someone to warm the bench all day long.

Jacob Stokes: Biggest signing I'd say Bony, but the best signing would have to be Carles Gil

Gary Brown: Who ever gets Scott Sinclair on the cheap. Deserves to play rather than making up the register.

Dane Catterill: Well I think that Fernando Torres is. BEING SERIOUS

  33. Have your say on #bbcsportsday

    Eljero Elia

Chris Lane: Best January transfer? Eljero Elia surely, already had an impact for Saints!

The Southampton loan signing from Werder Bremen has scored two goals in three games so far. The fact his move was confirmed in December is the only recent he isn't on our shortlist.

  34. £24m Cuadrado to Chelsea?

    Juan Cuadrado

Chelsea need another tricky winger-forward type, I hear literally none of you say.

    - they've met Fiorentina's £24m buyout clause for Colombia World Cup star Juan Cuadrado, 26,

Mohamed Salah, one of their many attacking midfielders, will move to the Serie A club on loan for the rest of the season, with Chelsea paying all his wages.

  35. Costa contests conduct charge

    Emre Can and Diego Costa

Chelsea striker Diego Costa will find out tomorrow if he can play on Saturday in the biggest game of the season so far - against title rivals Manchester City.

Costa is contesting the violent conduct charge he faces over an alleged stamp on Liverpool's Emre Can on Tuesday.

The FA will review the evidence, and the matter will be resolved on Friday.

  36. Your transfer hopes on 81111

    Francis Coquelin

Charlie: Do Arsenal really need to sign anyone? With Francis Coquelin proving he's not just a bench warmer and a new centre-back with a good record.

George in Abingdon: Fulham have to sign a centre-back to stop the leakiness at the back... About 45 goals conceded... In the Championship

Katy from Edinburgh: Mats Hummels would be a dream signing for United, hopefully combining well with Marcos Rojo and making Champions League this season a serious possibility, without another defender fourth is unrealistic

  37. Tottenham's McEvoy to join Colchester

    Football

    Kenneth McEvoy

Colchester United are set to sign Tottenham midfielder Kenneth McEvoy on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old Gareth Bale-lookalike has yet to make his Spurs debut, but played eight times during a loan spell with Peterborough United this season, scoring once.

"Spurs have agreed everything, it's about getting the paperwork through," U's boss Tony Humes told BBC Essex.

  38. Your transfer hopes on #bbcsportsday

Jamel Mcfarlane: As a Man Utd fan, we should buy Hummels, Laporte, Clyne to sort out the defence. We need Strootman, Depay and Dybala.

    Just the six...

  39. Pogba on the move?

    Paul Pogba

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba will leave the club within the next two years, probably for a world-record fee, according to his agent.

The 21-year-old France player, who joined Juve from Manchester United in 2012, has scored eight goals in 26 club appearances this season.

Agent Mino Raiola told Gazzetta dello Sport: "If it does not happen this year, it will be next year. Paul is the only major star who is available at the end of the season.

"If someone wants him, the market situation could see him go for more than 100m euros."

Why did Pogba leave United for a reported £800,000 compensation after refusing a new deal?

The midfielder revealed in 2014: "Paul Scholes had retired, Darren Fletcher was injured. There was no-one left to play in midfield.

"There was Rafael in midfield and I was disgusted."

  40. Text us your transfer hopes on 81111

    Mats Hummels

Vince Chang, Cardiff: As an Arsenal fan, I believe that with Paulista we have just about enough to get top four, but I would love to get Morgan Schneiderlin now to push on till the end and Mats Hummels and a world class striker in the summer.

  41. Celtic v Rangers good for game

    Football

    Celtic and Rangers managers

A return of Glasgow derbies between Rangers and Celtic will benefit Scottish football, according to the Ibrox club's caretaker manager.

Kenny McDowall - who is serving 12 months' notice - was speaking ahead of Sunday's Scottish League Cup semi-final at Hampden Park.

It will be the first meeting between the sides for more than three years since Rangers' problems.

"I think Scottish football needs this fixture," he told BBC Scotland. "Hopefully it will help Scotland get back to better things in the future."

You can listen to a special on Rangers' situation at 20:30 GMT on BBC Radio 5 live.

  42. Have your say on #bbcsportsday

Aham Ebogu: Surprised nobody seems to have called for Boubacar Diarra's sack!

Mali football association president Diarra is the man who eliminated his country from the Africa Cup of Nations after drawing unlucky number three in lots.

  43. VOTE: Who is the signing of the month?

    Carles Gil

Who do you think has been the best January signing? Well have your say - we've picked 10 to choose from which you can find at the top of this page on a mobile device and on the right-hand side on our desktop site.

We will reveal the winner at 21:30 GMT. Terms and conditions are here if you're into that kind of thing.

  44. Eto'o enters 'crisis' league

    Samuel Eto'o

Samuel Eto'o can't wait to get going at Sampdoria. Maybe. He certainly hasn't painted that picture.

The Cameroon legend, who played under Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan, has joined the Genoa club from Everton this week.

"There is so much difference to when I last came to Italy," the 33-year-old said.

"When I last came to Italy it was the moment that so many players were leaving, champions such as Kaka, Andriy Shevchenko, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

"It's a crisis moment, there aren't the financial resources, but football is still about what happens on the pitch and in the stadium. At the end of the day I hope I can help Sampdoria win."

  45. Post update

    Ashton Gate

There's live football on tonight too and it's huge if you're into the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

BBC Sport's Caroline Chapman sets the scene: "Was there ever a more glamorous Thursday night game than Bristol City v Gillingham in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy southern area final? I think not.

"Both sets of fans here at a freezing cold Ashton Gate know what might await them at full-time: Wembley… and perhaps a bit of frostbite.

"High-flying Bristol City have a nice 4-2 lead over the Gills from the first leg, but have the hosts had enough time to recover from their FA Cup antics on Sunday against West Ham?

"Whatever happens tonight it will be an all-League One affair at the national stadium in March, with Walsall awaiting them in the final. "

  46. Post update

    Shola Ameobi

Only two Premier League signings so far today and both of them have been by Pards at Palace.

Midfielder Jordon Mutch moved across London from QPR and striker Shola Ameobi's unmemorable spell with Turkish second tier side Gaziantep is now well and truly over.

The 33-year-old forward scored 53 league goals during his 1,000-year spell with Newcastle.

  47. Post update

    Transfers page

If you've missed any signings today, here's our comprehensive list from the transfers page which you can find here.

Hands up who predicted a Kozakken Boys - Burton transfer.

  48. Who do your club need to sign? #bbcsportsday

Let us know who your club need to sign this month. Do Arsenal need to sign Sergio Busquets? Could Swansea do with Shane Long? Or do Cambridge need Dion Dublin back?

Hit us up using #bbcsportsday on Twitter or text us on 81111 (UK only, and please let us know your name).

  49. Huth on the move?

    Robert Huth

Leicester are interested in signing Stoke defender Robert Huth on loan, according to Press Association Sport.

The former Chelsea emergency striker, now 30, has made just four appearances this season and has struggled with a recent knee injury.

Tangentially, PA played Football Manager for hours this week - all in the name of research - to find out who scouts selected as key targets for each team.

Huth was a top target for West Ham by this theory, while Leicester should be moving for Watford's Gabriele Angella, West Ham's James Collins or Crystal Palace's Damien Delaney.

Read more from PA's Football Manager experiment here.

  50. You've lot to be kidding me

Men draw balls out of bowl

So let's start with the most bizarre football story of the day.

Guinea reached the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals because one man drew a number three out of a bowl, while another man drew the number two.

Guinea and Mali ended Group D exactly joint on everything, having drawn all their games 1-1. So it went down to lots.

But instead of getting it over and done with in yesterday's post-match news conference it was delayed until this afternoon in a hotel in Equatorial Guinea.

Mali's football association president Boubacar Diarra went first and pulled out the ball that placed them third in the group.

With Diarra in tears, Amara Dabo, financial director of the Guinea sports ministry, then became the unlikeliest of football heroes by drawing the ball that confirmed his side in second place.

    Read more about that here.

  51. Post update

With only two business days left until the transfer deadline, we are going to keep Sportsday Live going all night long (or until 22:00 GMT anyway).

  52. Snow stops Mercedes testing

    Formula 1

    The 2014 Mercedes car

Blizzard conditions brought a premature end to Mercedes' maiden outing of this year's new challenger for the Formula One world titles.

The reigning constructors' champions kickstarted their campaign with a promotional day of track time - allowed under FIA regulations - at Silverstone.

The car, known as the F1 W06 Hybrid, took to the Northamptonshire circuit just after 1pm with Nico Rosberg at the wheel nefore he handed over to team-mate and current drivers' champion Lewis Hamilton.

The duo completed a total of 18 laps, just over 47 kilometres, before heavy snow brought filming to a halt. The car will make its full debut on Sunday in the first pre-season test in Jerez.

  53. England aim for final place

    Cricket

    Eoin Morgan

Captain Eoin Morgan hopes England can reach the final of the one-day tri-series to aid their preparations for the upcoming World Cup.

The winners of Friday's game with India in Perth will go forward to meet hosts Australia at the same venue on Sunday.

Morgan told BBC Sport: "I don't think it's added pressure. If we win and go through to the final it will give us momentum and confidence going into the World Cup. I think that's key within itself. We'll focus on tomorrow's game and hopefully produce our best."

England have lost both of their games against Australia in the tournament but beat India by nine wickets in their first meeting on 20 January.

  54. Sturridge apprehensive over Liverpool return

    Football

    Daniel Sturridge

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge says he is "anxious and excited" as he prepares to return from five months out injured.

The 25-year-old, who could return against West Ham on Saturday, also told BBC Radio 5 live that the mental side of his game has improved during his layoff with calf and thigh injuries.

"I'm just focusing on training hard and whenever the staff feel is the right time for me to get back involved I will be," he said

"I'm just looking forward to getting back involved - that's the main thing for me. I'm feeling great. I can't wait to get back playing again. It's been very frustrating but it's all a learning curve."

  55. Ginola still in Fifa presidential race

    Football

It now appears that David Ginola has not withdrawn from the race to become Fifa president.

  56. FA nominates Prince Ali of Jordan for Fifa presidency

    Football

The Football Association has formally nominated Prince Ali of Jordan as a candidate to stand against Sepp Blatter for the Fifa presidency.

The decision was rubber-stamped at an FA board meeting - but board members also welcomed the decision by Dutch FA president Michael van Praag to run for the presidency.

FA chairman Greg Dyke said after the meeting: "The board discussed the upcoming Fifa presidency election and the welcome proliferation of candidates in the race.

"We will now await Fifa's final confirmation of the candidates and look forward to assessing the manifestos of all who are entered into the election on 29 May. We have said for a long time that a new approach is essential within Fifa. I welcome the chance for a considered debate in the weeks ahead before we decide where the FA casts its vote."

  57. Wales under pressure - Warburton

    Rugby Union

    Wales captain Sam Warburton

Captain Sam Warburton says Wales are under pressure to beat England in their Six Nations opener on 6 February.

Wales also host Ireland and face trips to Scotland, France and Italy.

Warburton, 26, said: "If we lose then we've got three away games and we're one game down already... that's why there is quite a bit of pressure on that game to win."

  58. Clough's faith pays dividends for Adams

    Football

    Che Adams

New Sheffield United hero Che Adams has told the Daily Mirror that he wants to repay boss Nigel Clough's faith in him.

The 18-year-old, who joined from non-league Ilkeston Town in November, came off the bench to score twice in the Blades' Capital One Cup semi-final against Tottenham, only for Christian Eriksen to clinch the tie at the death with a late strike.

"A few clubs were interested in me but Nigel was the reason I came here," said Adams.

"You can see in Louis Reed [Adams' 17-year-old team-mate] that he's not scared to play young players. I was at Coventry at Under-14s but that's about it. Since then I've been in non-league football until now."

  59. Ginola's Fifa presidency bid at an end

    Football

    David Ginola

David Ginola's bid to become Fifa president appears to be at an end.

The former French midfielder's official website has been closed down with a message saying: "A huge thank you for supporting Team Ginola. The crowdfunding page is now closed. All donations will be returned to those that have pledged.

"The fight is not over. Football still needs to change. I urge you to continue to vocalize your craving for change in football in whatever way you can. Let it be known that no matter how small you think your voice may be alone, if we speak together we will be heard. Whilst FIFA may not be an open democracy for the footballing public, our opinions will be heeded, only if we persist."

  60. Portsmouth sign Fulham's Passley

    Football

Portsmouth have signed Fulham defender Josh Passley on a one-month youth loan. The 20-year-old has made two starts for Fulham in the FA Cup, and had a seven-game loan spell at Shrewsbury earlier this season.

  61. 'Very good to have Gabriel' - Wenger

    Football

Arsenal's new Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista has all the qualities needed to be a big hit in the Premier League, according to manager Arsene Wenger.

The Gunners have signed the 24-year-old from Villarreal in a £15 million deal, with Costa Rica striker Joel Campbell moving in the other direction on loan for the rest of the season.

    Paulista

Wenger said: "He has good pace, is good in the challenge and is tall, so he can adapt to English football.

"Maybe it will take some time to adapt completely, but overall it is very good to have him."

  62. Rio unveil torch relay plans

    Olympics

Organisers of the torch relay for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro say it will visit 250 towns and cities across the country, reaching 90% of its 200m people.

The Games begin in 18 months' time and the torch relay will cross all 26 states, and is expected to start about 100 days before the games open on 5 August 2016.

Rio organising committee president Carlos Nuzman says the relay will "give millions the chance to participate".

  71. Get involved - settling it

After Mali and Guinea had to draw lots to see who went through at the Africa Cup of Nations, we asked you for alternative ways to settle it. Your thoughts so far...

Chris Dales: The coaching staff should have a sudden-death penalty shoot-out to decide who goes through

Richard Todd: Mali and Guinea settle who goes through by taking penalties, but run from the halfway line like in ice hockey

Paul Dove: It should be decided on who had the most corner kicks during the three games so the most attacking team is rewarded.

MJ: Fair or unfair, it's written into the rules. Every team knows the score beforehand but only when it happens do they complain.

    And our favourite so far...

Alex Tomlin: Keepy-uppy tennis ball challenge to decide who goes through in Africa Cup of Nations. Fairer and more entertaining.

"The most important thing for me over the course of the games was the team is returning to the top level of performance.

  79. Get involved - settling it

After Mali and Guinea had to draw lots to see who went through at the Africa Cup of Nations, we asked how you for alternative ways to settle it. Your thoughts so far...

Kenneth Barr: Play a thirty minute mini match (15 mins each way) a la extra time. Still no result? Then the dreaded penalties.

Tom Mill: Fight to the death. First side not able to field a team for the quarter-finals, by default, bows out. It's the only fair way.

And, at the risk of making you dizzy, back to Liverpool where Brendan Rodgers has been asked about Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing.

The pair left Anfield while he was a manager but will return on Saturday as an integral part of West Ham's team.

    Andy Carroll

"Stuart was one I didn't want to let go. He was coming toward the end of his contract," said Rodgers.

"After what was a difficult start when we first worked together, in the second part of the season he was one of my regulars. He wasn't someone I wanted to move on.

"He has gone to West Ham and done very well. He is a gifted player technically. He is a good guy and trains hard every day."

As for Andy..? "He has great ability around the box, but in terms of how we wanted to play, he might not have been a regular player because of the movement and speed with which we try to work. But that doesn't mean he's a bad player, he is still an outstanding player."

  91. Leicester news conference

    Football

Leicester have a tough game to say the least on Saturday, away at Manchester United.

But the talk so far has been about transfers and whether Pearson will complete any.

    Nigel Pearson

The interviewer asks him pretty much the same question at least a dozen times but it's like getting blood out of a stone. We've cobbled together all Pearson's answers to get this much...

"I don't know if we'll do any business. You get nothing out of me other than you'll find out when and if something happens."

"The players believe we're capable of getting results, no matter how tough they look on paper."

  93. Liverpool news conference

    Football

Liverpool fans should not get their hopes up about a big transfer before deadline day passes.

Brendan Rodgers, unless it was his best poker face, looked downbeat when answering a question about whether he was planning any business.

"Every manager wants more, but you can't pluck players out of the air," he said.

"I'd like to do one or two things but players who will improve you aren't always available. I always said it was likely we wouldn't do anything and that will probably be the case."

    Daniel Sturridge

"Since he has come back from getting treatment in America he has been very upbeat and focused now working as hard as he can," said Rodgers.

"In training in the last few days he has been brilliant, back to what we've seen before - dynamic, fast and strong.

"But we have to be careful because he has been out for a long time. We can't put him under pressure and expect him to be our saving grace as soon as he gets back."

  95. Liverpool news conference

    Football

Brendan Rodgers has arrived and inevitably it didn't take long for someone to ask him for his thoughts on Diego Costa.

Rodgers, though, wasn't for saying too much, even though the question was phrased carefully - asking if the Liverpool boss had been interested in signing the striker last summer.

    Diego Costa

"I don't want to talk too much about Diego Costa," Rodgers said. "We were interested in him because he is outstanding player.

"All the best players have an edge. You just hope behaviour doesn't overstep the mark. But he is a wonderful player and that's all I need to say about it."

And that was the end of Diego talk.

    Cricket

    Kumar Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara scored an unbeaten 113 and then returned to break the world record for the most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in one-day internationals as Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by 34 runs in the seventh and final match in Wellington.

It was the 37-year-old's 21st ODI and he then passed Australia's Adam Gilchrist as the most successful wicketkeeper when he caught Corey Anderson off the bowling of Shaminda Eranga before also taking Tim Southee off Thisara Perera.

It takes his career total to 474 dismissals with 378 catches and 96 stumpings in the 50-over format when he played as a wicketkeeper while Gilchrist achieved 472 dismissals in 287 one-day matches.

Unfortunately for Sangakkara, and despite his heroics, New Zealand win the one-day series 4-2.

  128. Murray moves ahead

    Tennis

This is going worryingly well now.

    Andy Murray

Andy Murray is looking like a completely different man to the fella who limped and muttered his way through the opener, losing it on a tiebreak.

He won the second set 6-0 and has just taken the third as well, 6-3.

One set from the final, go on, Andy lad. We never doubted you...

  129. Who is Che Adams?

And while we're talking about the Sheffield United youngster, may we be so bold as to point you in the direction of a rather splendid article from our colleagues at Newsbeat.

Here's the low-down on the man - or boy to be more accurate - who gave Spurs that almighty fright in the League Cup.

  130. Good but must do better

    Football

Che Adams has only been on the planet for 18 years and it's a fair guess to say the best evening of his existence so far came at Bramall Lane last night.

The teenager scored two goals in as many minutes to take Sheffield United to the brink of League Cup glory against Tottenham. In the end it wasn't to be, but what a night for the youngster ... though it didn't spare him some words of advice from his manager.

    Che Adams

"He has a lot of potential at just 18," said Blades boss Nigel Clough. "But he has to learn not to slide in the corner and celebrate when we need a goal.

"He has got to go and get the ball out of the back of the net and put it on the centre spot. Little things like that he can improve on."

Talk about being brought back down to earth...

  131. Get involved - non-league gems

We're asking for the best players to rise from obscurity to make a name for themselves?

Here's a suggestion from one of our Bradford City-supporting colleagues...

    James Hanson

James Hanson, cost £7,500 from non-League Guiseley. Huge work rate and adored by the fans. Scored the goal at Villa Park that took us to the 2013 League Cup final and scored as City won the League Two play-off final later that year. A legend at the club with a chant of "he used to work at the co-op" ringing out after every goal in reference to his work in a local supermarket when playing non-league football.

That's the kind of thing we're after.

  132. Rooney v Tyson

Wayne Rooney has posted this pic on Instagram, with the message 'TBT (that's throwback Thursday for the non-social media folk among you) When I met Mike Tyson, my favourite boxer of all time."

    Rooney Tyson
  133. Less folk in the pool

    Swimming

The number of people swimming regularly has dropped as fewer people take part in sporting activities in general, a Sport England survey has found.

A total of 2.6m people took part in swimming at least once a week for 30 minutes between October 2013 and October 2014 - a drop of 245,000.

The number of people participating in regular sport is 15.6m, down 125,000, while there are also 121,700 fewer disabled people playing sport regularly, with 1.58m now taking part.

  134. Gunners salute

    Football

    Lee Dixon

There is a big interview with Lee Dixon on the Arsenal website, to celebrate 27 years since the full-back signed for the club.

If you want to see more of Lee and that jumper ('80s fashion was great, wasn't it?), then head here.

It is fair to say that Dixon - who joined the Gunners from Stoke in a £375,000 deal in 1988 - did pretty well at Arsenal, staying there 14 years, making 619 appearances, and helping the club win nine major trophies.

  135. Liverpool chase teenage star

    Football gossip

Daily Express: Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is preparing a £29m bid to beat Paris St-Germain, Real Madrid and Juventus to the signature of 17-year-old midfielder Ruben Neves, known as the 'new Sergio Busquets' at Porto.

  136. Murray levels it

    Tennis

Forget what we saying about a possible injury ... good news - Andy Murray is back in business, and in some style too.

It looks like the British number one might have been a bit cheesed off with losing the first set, because he's roared back by taking the second 6-0.

    Andy Murray

Good lad, that's more like it. Long way to go yet though...

There is live coverage on BBC Two at the moment, as well as commentary on Radio 5live Sports Extra, and live text commentary by BBC Sport's Aimee Lewis here.

  137. Get involved - Non-league gems

We're asking for the best players to rise from obscurity to make a name for themselves?

Lee Longstaff: Ian Wright and Kevin Phillps did alright - from obscurity in the non-league to Premier League top goalscorers

Will Johnson: Andre Gray. Hinckley - Luton - Brentford within 4 years and now being linked with moved to the Prem

  138. West Ham news conference

    Football

Liverpool might be shattered after their extra-time League Cup efforts against Chelsea on Tuesday, is the gist of the question put to Sam Allardyce.

"It does give us an opportunity," agrees the Hammers boss.

"But I think Liverpool are in the best form they've had all season. I expect a very difficult game, but one we look forward to."

    Andy Carroll

He's asked how much a goal would mean to front-man and former red Andy Carroll. "I'm sure Andy would like to score at Anfield but we don't want him to get over-anxious about going out to prove anything," said Allardyce.

  139. West Ham news conference

    Football

    Darren Fletcher

Sam Allardyce is asked about the chances of doing a deal for Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher.

He replies: "It is still a possibility. The move isn't dead yet but we'll see."

Asked if he wants to bring a striker in, Allardyce adds: "With us having Valencia, Sakho, Cole and Carroll we have more than enough frontmen to cope with demand this season."

  140. West Ham news conference

    Football

    Sam Allardyce

The Hammers play Liverpool on Saturday in the Premier League and first question to boss Sam Allardyce is about injuries.

"We have a few knocks and bruises and one or two lads who have been on the treatment bench this week, particularly Song, Tomkins and Jenkinson - so we're waiting to see how they are," said the gaffer.

"Tomkins and Jenkinson are touch and go. Collins is joining in training today so hopefully he'll be ok."

  143. Post update

    Andrew Benson

    BBC Sport chief F1 writer

"The first launch of a 2015 car is due later on and it's a biggie - the wraps come off the McLaren-Honda the all-star line-up of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button will drive.

"To whet people's appetites, McLaren have produced a little taster video starring their two drivers and based on the Back To The Future movies.

"It's a little nod to the first - and hugely successful - partnership between McLaren and Honda, back in the, yes, '80s.

"Alonso seems to be channelling a bit of The Princess Bride's Inigo Montoya in it, and there's a nice Lewis Hamilton joke by Button. Well worth two minutes of your time."

    You can watch it here.

  144. Murray loses first set

    Tennis

    Andy Murray

A big blow in Australia - assuming you're an Andy Murray fan - because the Scot has just lost the opening set against Tomas Berdych 7-6 on a tie-break.

It was a strange set, Murray appearing to limp and move a little awkwardly from an early stage.

There has been no trainer on court as yet though.

A big challenge now for Murray to come back and win. The prize, remember, is huge - a place in the Australian Open final.

There is live coverage on BBC Two from 08:30 GMT, as well as commentary on Radio 5live Sports Extra, and live text commentary by BBC Sport's Aimee Lewis here.

  145. Everton news conference

    Football

A final word from Roberto Martinez. Asked about whether he would bring anyone in before the end of deadline day, the Spaniard replied: "It is hard to tell. We are not looking at this window to try and find solutions. We did that work in the summer.

"I feel the work is to try and get the players back in a confident mood and to remind them, we haven't lost any of the talent we had last season. We have a strong squad.

"But as a football club we will always try to use the windows in our favour."

So that leaves us absolutely none-the-wiser then. And with that, he's off.

  146. Everton news conference

    Football

Asked if there is any truth in rumours that Everton have been offered Dimitar Berbatov, now at Monaco, Martinez put his best poker face on.

    Berbatov

"I know you love to throw names out but I'll never comment on other players. He is registered with another club so I won't comment," said the boss.

The interviewer didn't give up, adding 'does the same go for Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall (another rumoured target)?"

Martinez replied: "Is he registered to another club? Then yes, no comment."

  147. Everton news conference

    Football

Back to Everton, where Roberto Martinez has been asked if he intends to replace samuel Eto'o after the striker's departure to Sampdoria.

"Arouna Koné is fully fit and he is ready to give a lot to the team so I feel we don't need anyone to replace Samuel in that position," said the Toffees boss.

"Ross Barkley and Steven Naismith have been playing in that number 10 roles and I think we are strong in that area."

  150. Everton news conference

    Football

Asked if he was surprised at the impact Alan Pardew has had, Martinez replied: "I'm not surprised. It happens when you go back to a club that you know inside out.

    Alan Pardew

"It makes it a lot easier. His players want to show what they can do. You get a couple of results and suddenly the team oozes confidence.

"The experience of Alan will be a real strength to that side."

  151. Everton news conference

    Football

Everton travel to a Crystal Palace side rejuvenated under Alan Pardew on Saturday, which is what Roberto Martinez is asked about first.

"They have scored six goals away from home in their last two games and they are in a very good moment of their season, if not the best," said the Toffees boss.

"For us they have been a bit of a bogey side. The last three games at Goodison have always had a lot of goals.

"They bring a lot of threat and pace and are well organised defensively. With a new manager they will be full of confidence and they are a very dangerous team to face."

Rory McIlroy has made an impressive start at the Dubai Desert Classic, a run of four birdies in six holes moving him into a share of the lead.

With just one hole of his opening round remaining, McIlroy sits top of the leaderboard alongside Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts and England's Andy Sullivan.

The world number one has finished second in his last three events and, in Dubai, is returning to the scene of his first professional win six years ago, and a place where he has secured four consecutive top-10 finishes.

To celebrate McIlroy's fine start, here's a very arty photo of him on the course...

United fans, you have been warned...

  163. It's Russia v America

    Tennis

And while we're tennis-ing - to invent a new word - there has been women's semi-final action overnight, with Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova emerging victorious.

World number two Sharapova won an all-Russian contest against Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 6-2.

Meanwhile, Williams, the top seed, converted her ninth match point to beat fellow American Madison Keys 7-6 (7-5) 6-2.

    Sharapova Williams

Just how confident Sharapova will be going into the final is open to debate - the Russian has a 2-16 record against Williams and has not beaten the American since 2004.

    Football

Nigel Clough looked gutted afterwards but quite rightly said he was "incredibly proud" of his Sheffield United side and their League Cup exploits.

"To run a team like Spurs so close ... that bit of quality just made the difference," he said.

    Nigel Clough

"We knew one goal would change the complexion. We got the second and then had a chance for a third and just missed it.

"We were disappointed when we came away from White Hart Lane with a 1-0 defeat and we're even more so tonight, as we came so close."

  167. Blades blunted ... just

    Christian Eriksen

The Blades can be mighty proud of their efforts though - here's the full match report.
