John Carver, whose appointment as Newcastle head coach until the end of the season was confirmed earlier this week, believes his side can impress before the campaign finishes.
"We've got 16 games left. Why can't we go on a run? I've seen enough to suggest we can," he said in his news conference before Saturday's game against Hull.
"We've had a lot more team meetings and video every training session now. I have one or two different ideas, like anyone would."
Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini has expressed an interest in signing Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure this summer.
Mancini, who managed Toure at City, is a big admirer of the Ivory Coast international and believes the 31-year-old would be a great addition to his squad.
"Yaya is one of the strongest players in the world," Mancini told Italian newspaper Il Giornale. "He still is.
"We are building a team. There are players that change the look of a team, and Yaya is one of them. Next year we could try. We need to bring three champions, and we will see that we will then be ready to fight for the title."

Juventus star Paul Pogba's agent says Paris St-Germain and Real Madrid could lead the race to buy the French midfielder, although he may remain in Italy for another season.
Mino Railoa, who also represents Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mario Balotelli among others, compared Pogba to a painting by Dutch master Vincent van Gogh.
"Who knows how much he is worth? It depends how much money you have to spend, and who is buying," Raiola said in an interview with Italian newspaper La Gazetta dello Sport.
"How long can I keep Paul in Italy? Everyone has a card up their sleeve, it just depends when they want to play it."
Wasps back row Ashley Johnson has been suspended for three weeks for a dangerous tackle on Leinster's Dave Kearney.
The incident occurred during the opening minute of the European Champions Cup game between the sides last Saturday, which finished in a 20-20 draw.
The Mali and Guinea managers insist the drawing of lots should not be how their Africa Cup of Nations fate is decided.
A draw on Thursday afternoon at 15:00 GMT will decide which side reaches the quarter-finals after they finished joint second with identical records in Group D.
"We have to solve the problems of qualification without a drawing of lots," said Mali boss Henri Kasperczak.
Guinea coach Michel Dussuyer said: "Mali do not deserve to be eliminated in this way, just as we do not."
