    Championship strugglers Wigan Athletic confirm the signing of Leeds United defender Jason Pearce.

    The 27-year-old centre-back, who has also played for Bournemouth and Portsmouth, made 99 league appearances for Leeds.

    Australia captain Michael Clarke will play in a club match this weekend as he continues his rehabilitation from injury ahead of the World Cup.

    Clarke has not played since tearing his right hamstring last month in the first Test against India.

    He was selected in Australia's 15-man squad, with the proviso he will be fit for his country's second group match against Bangladesh on 21 February.

    Diego Costa had denied stamping on Liverpool's Emre Can in the early part of Tuesday's League Cup semi-final second leg at Stamford Bridge.

    The incident was not seen by the match officials but caught on video, which prompted the FA to take action.

    Costa denied the charge, which has now been upheld by the Football Association.

    Former England Under-21 winger Scott Sinclair says he wants to kick-start his career after leaving Manchester City until the end of the season.

    The 25-year-old has made just two Premier League starts for the Blues since arriving from Swansea in August 2012.

    "I believe I have my best years ahead of me," he says. "This is a new challenge, a new chapter in my life, and hopefully I can settle in as quickly as possible, have a good start and go from there."

    On-loan striker Matt Smith says he will be "honoured" to travel with the Bristol City squad for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final, despite being ineligible.

    His emergency loan from Fulham cannot be extended beyond 93 days and will end before the Wembley trip on 22 March.

    But Smith has been asked to be involved off the pitch after scoring all City's goals in their 5-3 southern area final aggregate win over Gillingham.

    "It's a touch of class from the manager," the 25-year-old told BBC Radio Bristol.

    Leicester manager Nigel Pearson says he will do all he can to avoid making any last-minute transfers before Monday's deadline.

    The Premier League's bottom club have only managed to sign two players so far in January, with Andrej Kramaric and Mark Schwarzer arriving.

    Pearson told BBC Radio Leicester: "If you have to do it, you have to do it. In an ideal world, I don't see why deals are done so late. I will certainly not be getting involved in that myself."

    Fifa president Sepp Blatter has fired his opening salvo in his campaign for re-election by saying Australia deserves to host the World Cup.

    In his first column in FIFA Weekly magazine since confirming he will be a candidate for May's election, Blatter said: "Australia is the only continent never to have hosted the World Cup finals.

    "That is basically an unfortunate omission in sporting history because very few countries boast such a rich sporting culture and long list of champions. We can say with confidence that it would be more than deserved if Australia were to stage the World Cup at some point."

    "It looks like we might have some back," said Bruce. "We've been away for four or five days and managed to get some training into Jelavic, Hernandez and Robertson. You can add Ramirez to that list too.

    "It's not ideal and we'd like another week for all of them if we're being honest, but as long as they come through training today it looks as though they'll be ok."
