"He is now in West Ham, so we have to wait and see," said Van Gaal on Friday. "He is my third captain so he is an important guy in the dressing room."

VfL Wolfsburg are poised to sign Chelsea's Germany international Andre Schurrle for a club record transfer, according to German media reports, after selling Croatia's Ivica Olic to Hamburg on Friday.

It was Schurrle's cross from which Mario Goetze scored the winning goal for Germany in the World Cup final last July, but the winger has failed to claim a regular place under Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

According to German daily Bild, Wolfsburg have agreed terms with Chelsea and the 24-year-old is set to sign a four-year deal.

They report personal terms are still to be agreed with N'Doye, 29, who has been away with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations.

When it comes to worst January transfer window signings, Hatem Ben Arfa's move to Nice from Newcastle will take some beating.

This is not a barb at his ability but due to the fact he won't be allowed to play for the French club this season.

Fifa have ruled a Newcastle Under-21 game counts as a competitive match and they say players can only play "official matches" for two clubs in a season

The 27-year-old joined Nice from Newcastle earlier this month after cutting short a loan spell at Hull. Someone has messed up there.

From Salford City to Manchester United

No, this isn't a joke.

A defender who made his Salford City debut just three weeks ago has joined Manchester United on an 18-month deal.

Libya-born Sadiq El Fitouri joined the Evo-Stik First Division side as a trialist in December after being released by Manchester City.

He said: "This is honestly a dream come true for me."

Eagles chairman Steve Parish announced the deal on his Twitter feed, saying: "Delighted that @papesouare has just this minute signed for #cpfc . A warm welcome from all of us".

Championship drama

Drama in this evening's Championship match between Bournemouth and Watford.

Watford's Gabriele Angella has been shown a red card for a tackle on the hosts' Callum Wilson and it is fair to say the visitors are not happy.

It is very difficult to see how that is a straight red card.

Great opportunity for league leaders Bournemouth to stretch their advantage though.

Sinclair's new chance

Another Premier League done deal is Scott Sinclair's loan switch from Manchester City until the end of the season.

The former Chelsea and Swansea City player, 25, has become one of football's forgotten men.

"I believe I have my best years ahead of me," Sinclair said.

Swansea City signed midfielder Jack Cork, 25, from Southampton for an undisclosed fee.

According to the latest reports in Spanish newspaper AS, Manchester United have kept €150 million in reserve to sign Real Madrid's Gareth Bale in the summer.

The Welsh international only joined Los Blancos 18 months ago and his future has been the subject of much speculation in recent months.

Former Newcastle and Hull winger Hatem Ben Arfa cannot play for new club Nice until next season following a French league ruling.

Fifa transfer rules prevent a player from turning out for more than two clubs in one season.

The 27-year-old played eight games for Hull and one for Newcastle's Under-21s earlier this season, with Fifa ruling the latter to be an official match.

Now the French Football League have announced that Ben Arfa's appearance in a match for Newcastle's development side counted as a competitive fixture.

Fifa rules state that "players may be registered with a maximum of three clubs during one season. During this period, the player is only eligible to play official matches for two clubs."

Newcastle Falcons head coach John Wells believes back-rower Mark Wilson's continued good form will be enough to win a place in the England set-up.

However, the Cumbrian was not named in the Saxons side on 21 January.

Fifa presidential candidate David Ginola says he will not stand in May's election.

The Frenchman, who played for several English clubs including Newcastle and Tottenham, did not receive the required five nominations needed to continue his bid.

"Contrary to some reports, I did not withdraw. Just as I did as a player, I gave everything until the final whistle," he says.

"Today I have mixed emotions. There is disappointment, anger, but there is also hope. I'm very proud of my campaign and the policies I proposed to reform football."

London calling Wigan

Millwall, QPR and Fulham are the London venues being considered by Wigan Warriors for a Super League fixture in the capital.

Wigan owner Ian Lenagan, a former director and major shareholder of London Broncos, wants to switch one of his club's home fixtures to the capital and is confident of making the move this season.

"It is a sensible way of expanding the game," Lenagan said.

Police investigate Keane 'road rage' incident

Police are investigating an alleged road rage incident involving former footballer Roy Keane.

The 43-year-old former Manchester United captain is said to have got into an altercation with a taxi driver in Altrincham town centre, which led to police being called.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At 11.30am, police were called to Ashley Road, Altrincham, to a report that a man had behaved aggressively towards another man. An investigation is under way to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident."

Keane, who has previously managed Sunderland and Ipswich and is currently Republic of Ireland assistant manager, lives in nearby Hale.

Strootman injury worse than first feared

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman says it will take "much longer" than first feared for him to recover from another knee injury.

The Netherlands international, who has been heavily linked to Manchester United during the past couple of seasons, was substituted in the first half of Saturday's 1-1 draw at Fiorentina.

He returned to the Roma side in November following a nine-month lay-off after tearing his cruciate ligament.

"The scar tissue from my previous operation has been removed successfully today. Unfortunately some cartilaginous damage, caused by the knock in the Fiorentina match, was found too," tweets the 24-year-old.

"This means I have to take a longer rest period than anticipated earlier and I am extremely disappointed that it will take much longer before I can be back on the pitch again."

Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella says Colombia winger Juan Cuadrado will not play for the Italian side this weekend, as he finalises a move to Chelsea.

The Premier League leaders are close to sealing a £23.3m deal for the 26-year-old, while Blues winger Mohamed Salah, 22, is likely to go on loan to the Viola as part of the deal.

"It was a sale that had to be done," says former Italy striker Montella. "The club has done the right thing because we are also getting a very good player.

"I am convinced that if Cuadrado could have played against Genoa tomorrow he would have."

Burton sign Derby County's Naylor

League Two side Burton Albion sign Derby County utility player Tom Naylor on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Naylor, 23, joined the Rams from Mansfield in 2012 but has played just 10 games for the Championship side and has been loaned out to Bradford, Grimsby, Newport and Cambridge.

"The top five teams in the men's event qualify for the 2016 Rio Paralympics with GB also hoping for a third European title in a row after winning in Germany in 2013.

Huth to serve two-match ban over Twitter comments

Stoke City defender Robert Huth will serve a two-match suspension after he admitted breaching FA Rules in relation to comments he made on social media.

Huth, who has been linked with a loan move to Leicester City, replied 12 times to a Twitter account that asks users to guess the gender of individuals pictured in explicit images.

An FA statement added that Huth was also fined £15,000 and ordered to complete a mandatory education course.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet says Saturday's Premier League match against Burnley "has to be the turning point" in his side's season.

Sunderland and Burnley are tied together on 20 points, just a point above the relegation zone.

"There are no more excuses with players coming or leaving or anything else, so it is just about us going in there with the group that we have and performing and winning the game."

Forshaw hopes to fire at Boro

Midfielder Adam Forshaw is looking forward to rediscovering his form at Middlesbrough following a difficult six-month spell at Wigan.

He moved to Wigan from Brentford in September but Forshaw, 23, made just 17 appearances for the Latics before joining Boro earlier this week.

"There's no hiding from it, it was a tough six months for me and the team," Forshaw told BBC Tees. "I moved to Wigan to make the next step in my career but it was stop-start, the manager was sacked and players came in and out.

Done deal - Man Utd sign defender

Calm down Manchester United fans. They haven't signed Mats Hummels. Or Ron Vlaar.

But they have signed Libya-born defender Sadiq El Fitouri from Evo-Stik First Division side Salford City.

Sadiq, 20, has signed an 18-month contract with United. He joined Salford City in December after being released by Manchester City.

Salford part-owner Phil Neville says: "We are immensely proud that our club has been able to give an opportunity to a boy who had the determination and passion to play without necessarily having the chances."

Sadiq adds: "This is honestly a dream come true for me and I have to thank Salford for the chance as well as the faith they have showed in me."

Turner handed 10-day ban

Britain's leading female jockey Hayley Turner has been given a 10-day ban for failing to ride out a finish at Lingfield on Friday.

Turner, 32, appeared to stop riding close to the winning post on the 6-4 favourite Singular Quest, who finished fourth in a maiden stakes at 14:00 GMT.

Stewards found her guilty of "failing to ride out on a horse that would have finished third".

Turner, whose career highlights have included being the first female British jockey to ride 100 winners in a year, will miss 10 days of racing between 13 and 24 February.

Swansea boss Garry Monk has been talking about midfielder Jack Cork, who is close to joining the Welsh club from Southampton.

"I understand there was an offer in place with a new contract [at Southampton], for whatever reason he decided not to sign that contract," said Monk.

"We're very pleased to have him at the club - or have him very soon. He's already got good experience at this level. Playing in a good team at a good club, his grounding's very good. He's still at a good age to develop him into a top midfielder."

Jeno Buzanszky, the last surviving member of Hungary's Magical Magyars team that beat England 6-3 at Wembley in 1953, has been laid to rest in St Stephen's Basilica in Budapest.

Buzanszky, who played 49 times for Hungary from 1950-56, died on 11 January, aged 89.

He was the last surviving member of the team which won the gold medal at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki and was runner-up to West Germany at the 1954 World Cup.

At Friday's ceremony, Prime Minister Viktor Orban called Buzanszky a "national legend".

Kenyan Rita Jeptoo, winner of the Boston and Chicago marathons for the last two years, has been banned from the sport for two years after failing a drugs test, Athletics Kenya said on Friday.

"AK followed due process in her (Rita Jeptoo) matter and it was appropriate that she serves a two-year ban," Athletics Kenya chief executive Isaac Kamande told Reuters.

Jeptoo has denied doping, telling reporters last year that the accusations against her were "lies".

Australia captain Michael Clarke will play in a club match this weekend as he continues his rehabilitation from injury ahead of the World Cup.

Clarke has not played since tearing his right hamstring last month in the first Test against India.

He was selected in Australia's 15-man squad, with the proviso he will be fit for his country's second group match against Bangladesh on 21 February.

Italy striker Mattia Destro joins struggling giants AC Milan from title-chasing Roma and has been unveiled by the Rossoneri today.

The 23-year-old scored 13 league goals as Roma finished runners-up to Juventus last season, but has fallen out of coach Rudi Garcia's plans this term.

He joins 11th-placed Milan on loan with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle is on the verge of completing his return to the Bundesliga after his agent confirmed a "verbal agreement" had been reached with Wolfsburg.

Toyota will return to the World Rally Championship in 2017, ending an 18-year absence from the sport.

Toyota spent 25 years in rally up to 1999, winning 43 events, along with four drivers' and three manufacturers' championships, with such famous names as Carlos Sainz, Juha Kankkunen and Didier Auriol at the wheel.

In 2017, the Japanese manufacturer will run a 1.6-litre turbo-charged Yaris that made its first public appearance in Tokyo on Friday.

Former Hull City striker Dean Windass is to become the club's first official ambassador.

Windass made his debut for his hometown club in 1991 and, after scoring 57 goals in four years, he was sold to Aberdeen in December 1995 for £700,000 which helped offset Hull's tax problems.

Following spells at Oxford United, Bradford City, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United, Windass returned to Hull in January 2007, helping the Tigers stay up before scoring the winner in the 2008 Championship play-off final against Bristol City to secure their promotion to the Premier League.

"I have always had a special affinity with the club and always will do," said Windass.

Willett leads the way in Dubai

England's Danny Willett shot to the top of the leaderboard at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic this morning.

The Sheffield player shaved six shots off par across 11 holes to move a stroke clear of the field, as the likes of Rory McIlroy prepared to start their second round.

Playing the back nine first, Willett picked up shots on the 10th, 12th, 13th, 17th, 18th and second, and is one ahead of the trio of Emiliano Grillo, Bernd Wiersberger and Marc Warren.

McIlroy was in the clubhouse on six under.

Deflate-gate: Super Bowl to feature '108 balls'

The balls used in Sunday's Super Bowl will be given "added security" amid the ongoing investigation into the NFL's 'deflate-gate' controversy.

Finalists New England Patriots used under-inflated balls in their victory over Indianapolis Colts.

Referee chief Dean Blandino said 108 balls will be used as the Patriots take on Seattle Seahawks in Arizona.

Hull get the worm as Friday's early-risers and kick things off at 08:30. Arsenal and QPR get involved from 09:00 before a wee lull until Tottenham rock up at 12:00.

Louis van Gaal speaks for Man Utd at 12:30 and Man City's Manuel Pellegrini takes centre stage at 12:45. Aston Villa and Sunderland's pressers are at 13:30, followed by Southampton and Swansea at 14:00. Stoke are last across the line at 14:30.

England chase 201 for place in the final

So England need just 201 from 50 overs to reach the Tri-Series final against Australia.

England won the toss and put India in under a muggy sky at the Waca. Rahane and Dhawan made a steady start and put on 83 for the first wicket, before England's bowlers fought back with three wickets for Finn and two apiece from Moeen, Broad and Woakes.

Woods struggles in Phoenix

Tiger Woods struggled to a two-over-par 73 in the opening round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open on Thursday in his first PGA Tour start of the season.

The former world number one was five over after 12 holes before an eagle on the 13th helped him finish eight shots behind leader Ryan Palmer.

Straight on with some breaking news now and our very own Ben Smith reports that Liverpool have joined the race to sign Burnley forward Danny Ings.

Reds manager Brendan Rodgers wants to get the deal done before the transfer window closes on Monday but is willing to allow the 22-year-old, who has scored seven goals this season, to return to Turf Moor on loan for the rest of the season to get the deal done.

Ings is now in the final six months of his contract and is attracting interest from a number of clubs, including Tottenham and David Moyes' Real Sociedad. Burnley are, however, determined to keep the player at the club until the end of the season.
