They need a big win to overhaul their inferior points-difference compared with title rivals Ireland and England.

This year's German Grand Prix has been withdrawn from the calendar after F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone failed to reach an agreement with the race promoters.

However, Hockenheim's owner told a German newspaper this week that the circuit would not be ready in time to stage the race on the weekend of 17-19 July.

The FIA has now confirmed the race will not be on the calendar, meaning there will only be 19 races this season.

  17. Pele's a fan of Kanepublished at 17:17 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March 2015

Pele has been chatting about Harry Kane.

    No, really.

The three-time World Cup winner believes the Tottenham striker, who has just earned a call-up to the England squad after a breakthrough season, can have a big impact.

"I think he is an excellent player - he could be a good one for the English team," Pele said. "What is important is the team work, I think. You cannot win games with individual players. Always it was like that.

"Tell him never think he can be the best. Always he has something to learn. That is my advice."

  19. Louis van Gaal news conferencepublished at 17:03 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March 2015

On the early exit of English clubs from European competition:

"The world is changing, it's not the same world as 20 years ago. Twenty years ago the English Premier League was up here, had a lot of money, a lot of players came to the Premier League because you are paying well and the Premier League is a high standard.

Louis van GaalImage source, Getty Images

"But the other countries are developing themselves also - but they also have a winter break while we have to play four or five matches in two weeks and they have a break of two weeks.

"Then you have to play those after how many matches you have already played. How many matches have Bayern Munich played in the meantime, for example? That's the difference. They are much fresher than players of Arsenal or Chelsea. That, in my opinion, is the difference because players need rest."

  20. Louis van Gaal news conferencepublished at 16:58 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March 2015

Louis van Gaal adds that he was delighted by his side's performance in the 3-0 win over Tottenham, but they will need to be better still to win against Liverpool at Anfield.

"I think we played very good in the first half - it was also good to have an evolution that is very positive," he said.

"[But] it says nothing when you lose the next match. Liverpool is not a ground where Manchester United have won a lot.

"When we have won at Liverpool, that will have shown we have improved further."
