    The new manager has been discussing Sunderland's chances of warding off relegation.

    "In Holland, we can see all the games in England - everything is on television, so I knew the squad, I knew the players, plus the fact that we have a great stadium and great fans.

    "With the support of them, we must do it. I have a good feeling about the squad after the last three days, so why not?"

    "Fifa has announced that $209m (£142m) will be shared among clubs who release players for the next two World Cups.

    "The deal will begin as of 2018 and will cover both the Russian and Qatar World Cups.

    "A Fifa statement said: 'A total of $209m will be distributed among the clubs releasing players to the participating teams in the 2018 World Cup. The same amount has been agreed for the 22nd edition to be staged in Qatar in 2022.'

    "The pot was $70m for Brazil 2010 and only $40m in South Africa in 2010."

    "In my opinion, it's a good side, a great club - why not?" he said when asked why he had taken on the challenge of replacing the sacked Gus Poyet.

    On relegation, he says: "We are now in a situation where we are playing more or less at the bottom of the league, so something has to change."

    On injuries and team selection: "We still have some injuries, we don't know exactly who will join us. I pick the squad after the final session."

    It finished 4-1 to Real after extra time as the club sealed its 10th European Cup.

    Gareth Bale was among the scorers that night at a certain other Stadium of Light in Lisbon.

    The most recent was a 4-0 humiliation at the Vicente Calderon for Real.

    Hard as it is to believe, this fresh-faced lad is 54 today.

    For those of you too young to recall, Jesper Olsen was an exotic rarity in the 1980s - a footballer in England's top flight from foreign shores. Denmark, to be precise.

    The diminutive winger joined Manchester United from Ajax in 1984 and went on to make 176 appearances for the club, scoring 24 goals and winning the FA Cup in 1985.

    Olsen shares his special day with fellow FA Cup winners Dave Beasant (56), Paul Merson (47) and Fernando Torres (31).

    But English football's leading scorer will actually be in action this evening when promotion chasers Wolves and Derby meet in the Championship.

    Wolves striker Benik Afobe has scored 27 times in all competitions this season - one more than Kane - with 19 of them coming on loan for MK Dons before his £2m January move to Molineux, and head coach Kenny Jackett is not surprised.

    "If you are a young striker and you go to a new club and you get off to that type of start, it should encourage you and give confidence," said Jackett.
