    Football

    Ross Barkley

Everton youngster Ross Barkley has revealed he sees himself as a striker, and believes he would benefit from playing a more advanced position.

"I feel I can have my greatest impact there because I'm free to roam around the pitch, take players on, have shots and create chances," he told Premier League World.

He also admitted that he has failed to live up to expectations this season, saying: "From my point of view I haven't done as well as I know I can, but you have to go through bad days to get to the great days you have in your career."

  43. Show us your trophies, Mike

    Football

The Northern Echo's Scott Wilson gives his view on the news that Newcastle United made record profits in 2014.

He writes: "A more balanced view of Newcastle's financial state would have to conclude that it is unfair to portray Ashley as a pantomime villain without any positive attributes.

"But for all that financial stability has to be preferable to the increasingly unsustainable level of debt that was being racked up under previous regimes, there is something profoundly unsettling about profit sheets being presented as an irrefutable proof of success.

"For all the numbers that were revealed on Newcastle's official club website today, one continues to trump them all. None - the number of major trophies won under Ashley's control."

  44. Tunisia free to compete in 2017 Afcon

    Football

  45. Cundy calls for merger

    Disability Sport

Paralympic cyclist Jody Cundy has called for able-bodied World Cup cycling events to include races for disabled athletes.

UCI president Brian Cookson has told the BBC merging some competitions is something they are considering, but insists they wouldn't want para-cycling to be seen as secondary and admits the logistics would be "quite difficult". He does confirm there will be a 'major shake-up' of able-bodied and disabled cycling events after the Rio Games.

British head coach Jon Norfolk also states that the team needs to find 'new ways of innovating' in order to stay ahead of the rest of the world. GB finished top of the medal table with nine honours, but only on account of their seven gold medals - China, USA and Australia all claimed a high total of medals.

    Brad Haddin applauds Martin Guptill

Australia may have won the Cricket World Cup, but that doesn't mean the country's media is giving them a free pass.

Esteemed sportswriter Greg Baum has criticised the team for their allegedly unsportsmanlike conduct in the final against New Zealand.

"In a corner of the glowing image of Australia's World Cup triumph is a blot that no amount of rubbing ever will remove," Baum writes in Melbourne newspaper The Age.

  51. Euro 2016: what do Northern Ireland need to qualify?

    Football

    BBC Sport

Story so far: Without a competitive win away from home since September 2010, Michael O'Neill's side may well have taken a draw had they been offered it before kick-off against Hungary in Budapest.

Instead, on the ninth anniversary of a legendary qualifying win over England, Northern Ireland secured another famous victory as Niall McGinn and Kyle Lafferty scored in the final 10 minutes to snatch a 2-1 win.

It proved a springboard for wins against the Faroe Islands and World Cup last-16 participants Greece in Piraeus. Victory over Finland on Sunday kept them in touch with group leaders Romania, who edged to a win over the Faroe Islands.

The next hurdle: Defeat in Romania last time out left Northern Ireland second in the group but O'Neill's side have the chance to atone for that when they meet again on home soil on 13 June.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill: "Romania are an excellent team and they top the group so we know we'll have to be at our very, very best to beat them."

  54. Moore backs Armitage for England

    Rugby Union

    Steffon Armitage

Toulon back-rower Steffon Armitage should be offered a place in England's Rugby World Cup squad, says BBC Sport rugby union pundit Brian Moore.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Moore says: "England's back row do not match the best back rows they will face in the World Cup. A back row of Armitage, Robshaw at six and Tom Wood or Billy Vunipola at No 8 would be better balanced."

Armitage was named European Player of the Year last year, but has not played for England since 2010 due to a policy of not picking players who play club rugby abroad.

  55. No holiday for Wales - Williams

    Football

    Football

Not everyone is delighted by the news that Newcastle made record profits in 2013-2014.

Norman Watson, chairman of the Newcastle United Supporters' Trust, tells BBC Sport: "None of this profit is being reflected on the pitch. The club went nearly 18 months without signing a full-time professional player on a permanent deal.

"Fans want to see money invested in the playing staff. Before the Arsenal match we had only 13 fully fit first-team players - the squad is extremely thin on the ground."

Newcastle sold France midfielder Yohan Cabaye to Paris St-Germain in a £19m deal in January 2014.

During the 2013-14 financial year, the club signed three players - France striker Loic Remy and Netherlands attacker Luuk de Jong on loan, along with teenage French midfielder Olivier Kemen for an undisclosed fee.

Story so far: Wales are undefeated with three wins and two draws, having already navigated Andorra's artificial pitch and a visit to group favourites Belgium before Saturday's trip to early leaders Israel.

They came through that latest test with flying colours and now lead Group B. Gareth Bale seems determined to play at a major tournament - the Real Madrid star was instrumental again for his nation in the victory in Haifa.

The next hurdle: The challenge now for Chris Coleman and his team is to keep up the high standards they have set themselves. Next up is a home tie with a talented Belgium team, who many fancied to top the group.

Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey: "We'll be looking forward to Belgium. It's a tough game but we are full of confidence at the moment. We are top of the group, so why can't we win the game?"

  72. Greaves to join Spurs greats

    Football

    Jimmy Greaves

    About time Spurs...

The club's record goal scorer Jimmy Greaves will be inducted into their Hall of Fame in May.

With 266 goals in 379 appearances in the league, FA and League Cups and Europe, perhaps the biggest surprise is that it has taken this long for Greaves to make it.

It will be the first time the former England striker has returned to White Hart Lane - bar a couple of media appearances - since he left in 1970.

  73. Five Kiwis in Team of Tournament

    Cricket

Daniel Vettori, Trent Boult, Corey Anderson and Brendon McCullum (left to right)

The ICC has selected its Team of the Tournament for the Cricket World Cup, and it provides some consolation for losing finalists New Zealand, who have five players in the team.

Captain Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill, Corey Anderson, Daniel Vettori and Trent Boult all make the cut, along with Australian trio Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc, South Africa's AB De Villiers and Morne Morkel, and Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara.

Interestingly, the team selected by the ICC is exactly the same as the XI named by the BBC's Test Match Special pundits.

  77. Euro 2016: what do Scotland need to qualify?

    Football

    BBC Sport

Story so far: Scotland emerged from their first qualifier without a point but plenty of positives, pushing world champions Germany all the way before succumbing to a 2-1 defeat.

They have built on that display admirably, beating Georgia and the Republic of Ireland 1-0, either side of a 2-2 draw in Poland - a nation that turned out at the last two European Championship.

On Sunday, Gordon Strachan's side maintained their momentum with a 6-1 win over Gibraltar. Steven Fletcher ended a six-year goal drought with a hat-trick - but only after the visitors had stunned Hampden by equalising.

The next hurdle: A September double-header against Georgia and Germany is on the horizon but before that is the mouth-watering prospect of facing the Republic of Ireland in June. It is a match neither can afford to lose if they are realistic about challenging Poland and Germany for the top two qualification slots.

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan: "I'm upbeat because after five games in a real hard group, to be where we are is not bad."

  78. Hernandez frustrated at Real

    Football

On-loan Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez says he's growing frustrated with his lack of playing time at Real Madrid.

In an interview with Fox Sports to be broadcast this evening, Hernandez complains: "I cooperate, I help and give my 100% in training but in the games the opportunities are slim."

Hernandez has scored three goals in just 13 appearances for Carlo Ancelotti's side this season, but the Mexico international served up a reminder of his prowess in front of goal by bagging the winner in yesterday's friendly against Ecuador.

Today we're asking whether all four home nations can make it to Euro 2016...

Ian Evans: Wales and N Ireland won't have a better chance. Scotland need to perform at home against Poland and Germany, that is a really tight group. England would have struggled massively had they been in that group.

Marcus Gardner: I can't see Scotland or Republic of Ireland getting through that group, Poland have been outstanding so far, but I hope I'm wrong.

Max Baggins-Craig: Scotland pulling it off (if they can keep Republic of Ireland at bay), England & Northern Ireland easily, Wales to go through, pending Gareth Bale.

  83. Euro 2016: what do England need to qualify?

    Football

    Group E as it stands

Throughout today, we're going to be taking a look at Euro 2016 qualification, and what the home nations have to do to make it. Here's the lowdown on England...

Story so far: A trip to Switzerland, who took eventual runners-up Argentina to within two minutes of penalties at the World Cup, presented a formidable early test for England, particularly after they went out of Brazil 2014 without winning a game.

But Roy Hodgson's side passed that with merit as Danny Welbeck scored both goals in a 2-0 win in Basel, and he has gone on to be top scorer in qualifying on six goals as England have raced to five wins from five, conceding only once.

A 4-0 victory over Lithuania on Friday was routine but provided Harry Kane with a moment to cherish, with the Tottenham striker scoring his first goal for England 79 seconds into his debut.

The next hurdle: England are six points clear at the top of their group and victory over second-placed Slovenia in June will see them take another big step towards France. Hodgson's team won 3-1 at Wembley in the first meeting.

England captain Wayne Rooney: "Since the World Cup we have been fantastic. A lot of teams around Europe will be looking at this team and will be frightened."

  84. Scott not reading too much into opener

    Football

Manchester City's Jill Scott has told BBC Sport not to read too much into the opening round of Women's Super League division one fixtures. City drew 0-0 at Birmingham City at the weekend, while champions Liverpool were beaten 2-1 at home by promoted Sunderland.

"The first game is always going to be a bit random because there's high emotion," said the England midfielder, 28. "I'm not reading too much into it. It's one result from 14."

Liverpool and England defender Gemma Bonner, 23, added: "With the number of players that have moved in the off-season, it's going to take a couple of games to settle in. But because there aren't that many games, it's important to hit the ground running."

  85. Fernandez set for Guinea

    Football

    Luis Fernandez

Former France international Luis Fernandez is set to take over as coach of Guinea in place of compatriot Michel Dussuyer, the Guinean Football Federation (FGF) confirms.

FGF secretary general Ibrahima Barry tells a news conference that the 55-year-old Fernandez had been in Conakry since Saturday visiting sports venues and holding talks with the country's sport minister.

They have been looking for a replacement since Dussuyer quit following Guinea's quarter-final exit from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

"It's an open discussion. We're at 90 or 95%," said Barry.

David Webb: I think all will make it, will make it a lot more interesting if all home nations make it!

David fincham: Don't forget Scotland still have to go away to Georgia. Can be a very difficult place to go so could easily drop points there.

As well as success for the British home nations at the weekend, there was a vital point for the Republic of Ireland.

Martin O'Neill's side snatched a 1-1 draw against Poland courtesy of a late goal by Shane Long. Former Wolves midfielder Slawomir Peszko had earlier given Poland the lead.

The Republic are now fourth in Group D, two points behind Scotland, and also trailing Poland and Germany.

North Ferriby - a community with a population of just under 4,000 - started as massive underdogs. The Conference North side were a division and 18 places below their Welsh opponents and were roared on by more than 3,000 supporters among the 14,585 Wembley crowd.

  96. It's not all bad at Newcastle

    Football

More on Newcastle's record profits, where their turnover rose to £129.7m, up from £95.9m the previous year.

Matchday revenue, which includes ticket sales and hospitality, dropped slightly to £25.9m from £27.8m in 2013, while season ticket renewal figures held steady, as did average Premier League attendances, which were 50,395 compared to 50,517 the previous season.

The club's debt remains at £129m in the form of an interest-free loan from owner Mike Ashley.

So, despite Newcastle's on-field struggles, does Ashley deserve some rare praise for the way he is running the club? Or not? Let us know on the usual channels.

    Back pages

    Monday's L'Equipe back page

Speaking of Euro 2016, what about home nation France? Well, they look to be in pretty good shape - according to French daily L'Equipe, "Les Bleus have something in reserve."

That's on the back of an impressive 2-0 friendly win against Denmark, which saw Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette grab a first international goal, with Arsenal's Olivier Giroud adding the second.

L'Equipe also looks at Sebastian Vettel's win in the Malaysian Grand Prix, saying it "totally relaunches the interest in Formula 1".

  103. Sterling set to reject Liverpool deal?

    Back pages

    Monday's Daily Mail back page

Potentially alarming news for Liverpool fans on the back page of the Daily Mail - the paper suggests that Raheem Sterling could reject a new deal at Anfield.

The paper's football news correspondent Neil Ashton writes: "Negotiations with Sterling have reached yet another impasse and it is understood that even if Liverpool offer £180,000 a week he will not sign."

There's also a line on Harry Kane - the Mail suggests that the striker himself will get the final say on whether he represents England under-21s at this summer's European Championships.

  104. Vettel victory stuns Hamilton

  105. Rooney reveals new England approach

    Back pages

  106. Fletcher treble helps Scotland sink Gibraltar

    Football

    Steven Fletcher celebrates

Scotland's chances of making it to Euro 2016 also received a boost after a comfortable 6-1 victory over Gibraltar.

Steven Fletcher netted the national team's first hat-trick for almost 50 years as the part-timers were swatted aside, with Shaun Maloney and Steven Naismith adding the other goals.

Gordon Strachan's side are third in what is shaping up to be a very tight Group D, level with Germany and just a point behind leaders Poland.

    Football

    Kyle Laffery

Who said international weekends were boring? They're not singing that tune in Northern Ireland this morning, that's for sure - not after a 2-1 win over Finland in Euro 2016 qualification.

Kyle Lafferty came over all Zlatan Ibrahimovic and bagged two terrific first-half goals, the first a superb right-foot volley, the second a precise header.

Berat Sadik pulled one back for Finland but it was not enough to deny Northern Ireland their fourth win of the campaign, taking them just one point behind Romania in second place in Group F.

  108. Woods out of top 100

    Golf

    Tiger Woods

Before we get to the football, an interesting bit of breaking news to bring you. Tiger Woods has dropped out of the top 100 players in golf's world rankings for the first time since 1996.

  110. The power of four

    Kyle Lafferty

Where is Kyle Lafferty pointing? Could it be Destination France? That's what Northern Ireland are hoping after another excellent victory in their Euro 2016 qualification campaign.

Lafferty scored twice to sink Finland 2-1, while there was also a big win for Scotland over Gibraltar, with Steven Fletcher netting a hat-trick.

Following hot on the heels of wins for England and Wales, it raises a tantalising question: could all four home nations make it to Euro 2016?
