  3. Stoke hopeful of Begovic stay

    Football

    Asmir Begovic

Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic will not leave the Britannia Stadium this summer - hopes Potters boss Mark Hughes.

The Bosnia international, 27, is out of contract in 2016 and Hughes is optimistic he will sign a new deal at the end of the season.

"We are scheduled to have talks with Asmir's people in the next few weeks I think," say Hughes, whose team host Southampton on Saturday.

"I think both parties have stated that probably at the end of the season those talks will come to a conclusion, and we are very hopeful Asmir will stay here.

"He has attracted attention because he is an outstanding goalkeeper."

  4. Countdown to kick-off - Boro team news

    Norwich v Middlesbrough (19:45 BST)

Middlesbrough are without defender Jonathan Woodgate, who has a hamstring problem.

Defender Daniel Ayala (thigh) is a doubt, as is winger Albert Adomah (calf and ankle), while Chelsea loanee Tomas Kalas plays his final game for Aitor Karanka's men.

Boro will climb above Bournemouth, Norwich and Watford to move top - for tonight at least - by taking all three points at Carrow Road.

Second-placed Norwich will go two points clear of current leaders Bournemouth, who host Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, with a win.

While we're on the subject of the Championship....

The division's player of the season shortlist - Middlesbrough's Patrick Bamford, Watford's Troy Deeney and Ipswich's Daryl Murphy - is prompting plenty of discussion. Here are a few of your Tweets:

Ben Chant: Not a single Bournemouth player on the Championship player of the season shortlist? What a load of rubbish.

Chijioke Akwukwaegbu: Watford's Odion Ighalo is the best player in the championship. I'm surprised he's not on the list.

Liam Wilson: Boro fan. Bamford doesn't just score goals, he's extremely intelligent, lot of those goals made by his movement and awareness.

  7. Countdown to kick-off

    Football

Any plans for Friday evening? If so, we hope they have been organised around a humdinger of a Championship match.

Second-placed Norwich host fourth-placed Middlesbrough at Carrow Road, with the winners knowing they will leap to the top of the second-tier table.

If your plans do involve a trip to the movies, or sitting in the pub, then make sure you follow all the action with BBC Sport's live text commentary.

  8. Stoke eye Barca teenager

    Football

Stoke are planning to bring a little piece of Barcelona to the Potteries this summer - by snapping up Moroccan teenager Moha El Ouriachi from the Catalan club.

"We are trying to improve the quality of the Under-21 group and Moha is one that we feel we can get over the line," says Potters boss Mark Hughes, who played for Barca in the 1980s.

"If the Under 21s can impress there then they will push to get in my squad. Moha is predominantly left footed, he has good pace and he ticks a lot of the boxes that I like in a player."

  10. Magician rues missed trick

    Snooker

    Shamoon Hafez

    BBC Sport in Sheffield

It has been 10 years since Shaun Murphy came all the way through qualifying to claim the 2005 World Championship title, but should he have had more? The man nicknamed 'The Magician' tells BBC Sport his #mysportingregret:

"I regret not taking more a role in the 2009 final, John Higgins blew me away, I just did not compete in the match. Getting to the final was so difficult for me and I ran my race, I didn't have anything left to give.

"I also regret the 2007 semi-final defeat to Mark Selby. I was 5-1 up and got caught up in the 'Jester from Leicester's' laughing and joking. It meant I took my foot off the gas and the next thing you know, I was shaking his hand at the end of the match."

  11. Hock hopes to 'shut up' Salford fans

    Rugby League

    Gareth Hock

Almost every player seems to receive plenty of stick when they return to a former club - but Leigh Centurions forward Gareth Hock is expecting more than most.

And he tells BBC North West Tonight he hopes to 'shut up' Salford fans when he faces his former club for the first time in the Challenge Cup fifth round on Saturday.

Hock, 31, left the Red Devils in February and had been threatened with legal action if he faced them because of a settlement agreement supposedly reached when he left.

Championship leaders Leigh however have since said that Hock is available to play in the tie at the Leigh Sports Village.

"The livelihood of the club and relegation are not at stake on Sunday, it's about us maybe getting some glory," he says.

"We have to impose ourselves on a very good Liverpool side and that's what we intend to do.

"We think we've got a good blend, we've got a plan and we hope we can affect Liverpool."

  13. European Tour appoint new chief

    Golf

The PGA European Tour announces the appointment of Keith Pelley as its new chief executive officer.

This follows the announcement in November 2014 that George O'Grady would be stepping down from the role.

The 65-year-old was instrumental in helping golf be reinstated as an Olympic sport for the first time in 112 years, and has also overseen the significant growth of The Ryder Cup.

Canadian Pelley, 50, is currently the president of Rogers Media, a media conglomerate in Canada.

    Shamoon Hafez

    BBC Sport in Sheffield

    Mark Selby

"The champion is here. Things just got serious at the Crucible with the arrival of 2014 World Championship winner Mark Selby. But the Jester from Leicester seems in a relaxed mood as he undergoes media duties ahead of his first round match against Kurt Maflin on Saturday at 10:00 BST.

"The big question on everyone's lips is will he able to break 'the Crucible curse'? No first time champion has ever defender their crown."

  16. North v South in Superleague play-offs

    Netball

    Yorkshire Jets v Surrey Storm

Netball's Superleague season is drawing to a close with two weekends of play-offs.

  19. Kearney out of Rio 2016

    Judo

Newcastle v Tottenham (Sun, 16:00 BST)

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has got a decision to make over three players before Sunday's Premier League clash at Newcastle.

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (knee), and defenders Jan Vertonghen (illness) and Kyle Walker (foot) are all doubts.

Aston Villa v Liverpool (Sun, 15:00 BST)

    Shay Given

Republic of Ireland keeper Shay Given will start Aston Villa's FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool, confirms boss Tim Sherwood.

The veteran goalie, who turns 39 on Monday, is behind Brad Guzan in the Premier League but has been Villa's number one choice in the cup competitions.

"Shay plays. Absolutely. He's done nothing wrong Shay, he's a large part of the reason we're in this semi-final," says Sherwood.

"The saves he made against Leicester were fantastic and at the right time. He trains fantastically well and he's pushing Brad all the way for that number one spot."

  22. Smith aiming for Worlds place

    Gymnastics

    Louis Smith

Louis Smith is aiming to make the Great Britain team for the World Gymnastics Championships - and perhaps also at the Rio Olympics.

The pommel specialist, and former Strictly Come Dancing champion, has begun training on parallel bars to make himself more versatile.

"The Worlds is the last major competition before the Olympics and I want to prove I'm not just a pommel specialist," Smith told BBC Sport.

    Track Cycling

    Bradley Wiggins

Sir Bradley Wiggins hasn't lost his rock-star appeal, it would seem.

Tickets to see the 34-year-old four-time Olympic champion attempt an Hour Record challenge sold out in seven minutes on Friday.

"Players don't need to leave England any more. A few years ago I did think that was the case," she told BBC Sport's Jo Currie.

  27. Ferrari head Bahrain practice

    Formula 1

Is the Ferrari revival back on? Possibly not. The Italian team are setting the pace after the first practice at the Bahrain Grand Prix - but Mercedes are holding back.

Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel finish first and second respectively on day one - Raikkonen 0.202 seconds faster than his teammate.

Lewis Hamilton who currently leads the drivers' championship ended the day in 16th place, one behind team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Mercedes's unusual approach to the session - they normally dominate practice - was taken because conditions in the desert were very different from those that will prevail in qualifying and race.

  28. Downie takes Euro bronze

    Gymnastics

    Ellie Downie

  32. Anderson pushes for England record

It is a matter of when, not if, James Anderson will surpass Sir Ian Botham as England's record Test wicket-taker. Can the Lancastrian beat Beefy's mark today?

"They have had a good season and quite rightly so they've received a lot of plaudits.

"We've probably been somewhat under the radar in comparison but I think it's an opportunity for us to show how far we've come as well."

Watford boss Slavisa Jokanovic has been speaking to BBC Three Counties' Geoff Doyle about striker Troy Deeney being shortlisted for Championship player of the year.

"He's a great player. A Premier League player who plays in the Championship. If he wins it, he deserves it. He brings character on the field and in the dressing room. He puts himself as leader of the team. I'm sure he can still get better in all areas. There doesn't exist any complete player."

Eddie Smith, Worlingworth: While I get there should be some other mentions for nominations for the Championship player of the year. Murphy is deservedly up there, you can't score 24 in a season for Ipswich and not win the trophy.

  47. Pellegrini not feeling the pressure

Man City v West Ham (Sun, 13:30)

    Manuel Pellegrini

The full transcript from Manuel Pellegrini's news conference has arrived at BBC Sport Towers.

And the cool, calm and collected Chilean says he felt more pressure last season when Manchester City were fighting for the Premier League title than he does now - with the Blues slipping to fourth having lost four of their last six matches.

"It is the worst period of results since I arrived and 2015 has been a very bad year," says Pellegrini, who arrived from Malaga in the summer of 2013.

"I have a different thinking to you of what pressure is - that's to win every game and play the way I like. Last year more there was pressure, I arrived in the Premier League and fought for the title."

  48. Smith targets parallel action

    Gymnastics

    Louis Smith

Louis Smith tells BBC Sport he has started training on parallel bars in order to make the Great Britain team for the World Championships in October.

Craig Robertson: For me Bamford has been inconsistent. Ighalo, Nuhiu, Jota and Jerome should have been included too. Troy Deeney should win.

Tom AkA Fetzie: They might as well call it the "top scorer award" and be done with it. There's more to a top player than goal tally.

  59. Jose Mourinho news conference

Chelsea v Man Utd (Sat, 17:30)

    Diego Costa

Some team news from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho - he is without top scorer Diego Costa for Saturday's home match against Manchester United.

The Spain striker limped out of the win against Stoke on 4 April with a thigh injury.

"He is progressing very well," says Mourinho. "I think he has a chance for the next weekend against Arsenal.

"Our target was for Diego to play in the last four matches. Arsenal is the sixth match to the end so if he doesn't play Arsenal or Leicester, it is not a problem."

  60. Van Gaal's title logic

Chelsea v Man Utd (Sat, 17:30)

    Simon Stone

    BBC Sport at Carrington

    Louis van Gaal

"It's fair to say Louis van Gaal is adopting a realistic approach to Manchester United's Premier League title chances.

"After six successive wins, and most recently accounting for Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City, a sense of optimism around Old Trafford has been growing.

"Journalists at this morning's press conference were ready to tackle the subject ahead of United's trip to Stamford Bridge.

"Indeed, the very first question was: 'What makes you think you can be the first team to win at Stamford Bridge in the league this season?'.

"Van Gaal ignored it completely, instead reeling off a list of injuries that has accounted for four members of his squad.

"Later, when asked if his team could win the title - with six games left and United eight points adrift - rather than talk up the chances of it happening, Van Gaal finished off his answer by saying "it is not logical".

  61. Jose Mourinho news conference

Chelsea v Man Utd (Sat, 17:30)

Jose Mourinho believes that Chelsea have been the target of more social media abuse than any other Premier League clubs because of their dominance.

"I think it is because we are boring - we have been top of the league since day one. That is something people in this country don't like.

"Everyone would love the Premier League to be like the Championship where four teams are separated by a couple of points.

"I know that would be the ideal scenario in the Premier League, but we are trying not to allow that to happen."

  62. Jose Mourinho news conference

Chelsea v Man Utd (Sat, 17:30)

Jose Mourinho is asked who he thinks should win the Premier League Manager of the Year award...

  63. Jose Mourinho news conference

Chelsea v Man Utd (Sat, 17:30)

Jose Mourinho downplays Manchester United's injury worries: "Their squad is amazing - in numbers and quality. I sat down this week to analyse the opponents and I realise what they have. Van Gaal is a fantastic coach and they are more than ready."

    Jose Mourinho

On his relationship with Louis Van Gaal: "I consider him a big big friend but because of jobs - fighting for the same objectives - we are not speaking every week. But the deep feelings towards a friend doesn't change."

  64. Jose Mourinho news conference

Chelsea v Man Utd (Sat, 17:30)

Jose Mourinho on Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard's nomination for the PFA Player of the Year award: "He has been very consistent since the beginning of the season. In my opinion he wants to win the league - that's what we want too, to win the Premier League not the player of the year. But obviously if a player deserves something special and it comes from fellow players it means a bit more. If Eden wins that then great- but his objective to win Premier League."

  65. Jose Mourinho news conference

Chelsea v Man Utd (Sat, 17:30)

Jose Mourinho says Chelsea against Manchester United is "special fixture": "To play against Manchester United is to play against one of biggest clubs in the world. The right-hander is through to his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final since he reached the final of the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris five years ago.

Monfils will now take on Tomas Berdych in Saturday's semi-final where he will aim to overturn a 5-1 record in favour of the Czech.

Dan, Barnet: Where is Bournemouth's Matt Ritchie?!?! 11 goals and 15 assists with his team top of the table!

Cherries fan: Calum Wilson of Bournemouth would be my pick, going up a division and smashing it!

  72. Napoli's Ghoulam goes (under)crackers

    Faouzi Ghoulam

It has been a shocking week of fashion faux pas in the football world.

First Charles N'Zogbia turned up to training in a questionable two piece floral number but Napoli's Faouzi Ghoulam has just upped the ante.

Following his sides 4-1 Europa League victory over Wolfsburg, the defender celebrated by stripping down to his underwear - as you do.

The underwear in question happened to be a rather snazzy pair of Dragon Ball Z - a Japanese manga cartoon - briefs.

  73. Van Gaal's injury nightmare

Chelsea v Man Utd (Sat, 17:30)

    Louis Van Gaal

Not the ideal situation, then, for Louis van Gaal's Manchester United going into Saturday's clash with league leaders Chelsea.

Van Gaal told reporters Michael Carrick, Marcus Rojo, Phil Jones and Daley Blind all picked up injuries in last weekend's 4-2 win over Manchester City.

"It is the worst scenario," said the Dutchman.

"Marcos and Phil can both play left central defender, and Jonny Evans is also suspended so I do not have many choices.

"Daley Blind and Michael Carrick could have played as holding midfields and I do not have another option. It is a puzzle."

Van Gaal said he may consider Wayne Rooney for a midfield role.

  74. Van Gerwen falls to first defeat

    Darts

    Michael van Gerwen

Michael van Gerwen remains top of the Premier League table, despite suffering his first defeat of the competition.

The 25-year-old, who won the Premier League in 2013, lost 7-3 to fellow Dutchman and defending champion Raymond van Barneveld in Aberdeen.

Dave Chisnall could have overtaken Van Gerwen at the top but lost 7-3 to Phil Taylor in week 11, before the 16-times world champion drew his second match of the night 6-6 with Stephen Bunting.

Scotland's Gary Anderson drew 6-6 with James Wade and a resurgent Adrian Lewis beat Bunting 7-2 in Thursday's other two games.

Chelsea v Man Utd (Sat, 17:30)

Tick tock. The journalists assembled at Manchester United's Carrington training ground will be checking their watches as they patiently wait for the arrival of Louis van Gaal.

The Dutchman will be talking about Sunday's trip to Chelsea - and whatever else takes his fancy. Perhaps he might recommend a dish from the Chinese restaurant he visited after Sunday's derby win...

"It's fantastic to have Colo back this weekend," manager John Carver told the club website.

"He's our captain, the leader of this football club and has been for a long time. Having him out there will give everyone - players and staff - a huge lift, and I'm sure we will get a huge performance out of him."

The Latics, who are eight points adrift of fourth-bottom Rotherham, need to win their three remaining games to stand any chance of avoiding the drop.

But Rotherham could potentially be docked three points after fielding an ineligible player.
