Manny Oyeleke spent much of the last two seasons on loan at Aldershot Town

Exeter City have the potential to get promoted to League One, according to new signing Manny Oyeleke.

The 22-year-old midfielder was Exeter's first signing of the summer after he was released by Brentford last month.

"If we believe in ourselves, have a good start and keep the confidence high, I think we can go all the way.

'GB cycling too involved'

British Cycling was "too involved" in Sir Bradley Wiggins' hour record bid, says the coach of fellow Briton Alex Dowsett, the man whose record he beat.

Steve Collins alleged the governing body helped design parts of Wiggins' bike, which he felt was "not allowed".

Asked if he thought British Cycling preferred one rider to another, Collins told BBC Essex: "Oh yes, completely."

But a British Cycling (BC) spokesperson said Dowsett "had technical and operational support from BC personnel".

Wiggins, 35, completed a distance of 54.526km (33.88 miles) at Lee Valley VeloPark in London on Sunday, smashing Dowsett's mark of 52.937km (32.89 miles) that had been set in May.

Nottingham Open

Seeded players Karin Knapp and Ajla Tomljanovic lost in the first round of the Nottingham Open as top-level women's tennis returned to the central England grass-court venue for the first time in 42 years.

The fourth-seeded Knapp lost 6-4, 6-2 to Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, and Tomljanovic, the number eight seed from Croatia, was beaten 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 by Lauren Davis of the United States.

Other winners before rain arrived late in the afternoon were Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, Bojana Jovanovski and Ana Konjuh.

Polish world number 13 Agnieszka Radwanska is the only member of the top 20 playing in the Wimbledon warm-up tournament and is looking to rebound from a first-round loss at the French Open.

Twelve-time Grand Slam champion Billie Jean King won the title the last time the Nottingham Open was staged on the main tour.

Xavi to be unveiled in Qatar

Qatari side Al Sadd have announced that Barcelona midfielder Xavi will undergo a medical on Tuesday and be presented as a player on Thursday.

The Spain midfielder, 35, has won eight league titles and four Champions League trophies with the club.

He signed a three-year deal with Al Sadd in May.

Old haunt for Beardsley

Striker Chris Beardsley, 31, has joined Mansfield for the third time in his career, after leaving League Two rivals Stevenage.

Stags manager Adam Murray said: "Chris offers something we lacked last year - a bit of know-how, experience and guile in this league."

Murray has also snapped up Oxford City striker Adi Yussuf on a free transfer.

'It's going to take time' - Button

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso accused his own team of looking like "amateurs" at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Both he and team-mate Jenson Button retired from the race. McLaren have just four points so far this season.

Button posted on Facebook today on Monday: "This weekend was quite painful, but so far this season there's been improvement at every race, with the exception of yesterday.

"Hopefully, we'll be back on track in Austria where we have some updates coming! Thank you guys for your continued support, it may take a little time but we'll get there."

Could David Beckham's daughter be a future England star? Well she now has her own kit to cheer on England's women in Canada at the World Cup.

The former England captain posted this picture on Instagram saying: "What an amazing gift from the England woman's team for Harper ... Good luck to the team tomorrow in their first game against France .. #lionesses #pride #England."

England start their World Cup campaign against France at 18:00 BST on Tuesday. There will be live coverage on BBC Two at 17:30 BST and on BBC Radio 5 live.

Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger has paid tribute to the Arsenal striker.

"In my eyes, he is often underrated. He's got fewer grey hairs than me and that's probably because he's had more fun in his life than I've had. He's always in a good mood."

The Arsenal midfielder was left out of Roy Hodgson's England squad for games against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia.

'I still have future at Arsenal'

Lukas Podolski believes he still has a future at Arsenal after a disappointing loan spell at Inter Milan.

The Germany forward has fallen out of favour at Emirates Stadium and spent the second half of the season at the Serie A club, scoring one goal in 17 games.

Podolski, 30, has one year left on his Gunners deal and says he would be happy to stay at the London club next season.

"They are a great club and I think I can help them," he said.

"Things can always change, but if needs be I will remain at Arsenal next season."

Watford fans invaded the pitch to celebrate promotion to the Premier League

Watford have announced the construction of 700 more seats at Vicarage Road to increase capacity before their return to the Premier League.

The additional seating will be built in the Sir Elton John Stand, replacing staircases which are currently at the foot of the stand.

That will take the capacity of the ground to above 21,000, more than top-flight rivals Swansea and Bournemouth.

Centre-back Saville, 24, made 26 league appearances last season as the Bees won the Conference title.

Left-back Richards, 20, did not make a senior appearance for Fulham but had a loan spell at Aldershot earlier this year, featuring nine times.

Torquay takeover expected this week

Torquay United should have new owners by the end of the week, according to the club's acting chairman Bill Phillips.

It is understood that the group of 10 local businessmen hoping to buy the Conference club will meet on Monday night to formalise their takeover plans.

Former Russian Olympic champion dies

Sergei Sharikov, a two-time Olympic fencing champion from Russia, has died in a car crash aged 40, the Russian Olympic Committee has confirmed.

Sharikov won gold in the team saber event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 2000 Sydney Games, as well as individual saber silver in 1996 and team saber bronze in 2004.

Russian media reported that Sharikov lost control of an off-road vehicle while driving southwest of Moscow on Saturday and crashed head-on into a car carrying two police officers.

Jermaine Beckford will join Preston on a two-year deal from 1 July from Bolton Wanderers after helping North End win promotion to the Championship.

The 31-year-old scored a hat-trick at Wembley in Preston's League One play-off final win over Swindon last month.

He joined the Lilywhites on loan from Bolton last November and the former Everton and Leeds striker netted 18 goals in his 31 appearances.

"It is somewhere that feels like home," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

Collins joins Stags from Northampton

Mansfield Town have signed defender Lee Collins on a free transfer.

The 26-year-old was a free agent having not been offered new terms by Northampton Town for next season.

Collins has played more than 300 games during a career which has included a four-year spell at Port Vale and two seasons with the Cobblers.

Derbyshire in command after White blast

Having been bowled out for only 86 in their first innings and then see Kent reach 73-3 at lunch, Derbyshire have bounced back on the second afternoon to take control of the match.

Wayne White took 6-25 to dismiss the hosts for only 112 - their last nine wickets falling for only 49 runs - and then Billy Godleman (30 not out) and Chesney Hughes (25 not out) shared 64 for the second wicket to guide Derbyshire to 70-1 at tea.

The away side need 162 more runs to secure victory.

Tigers call off US match

Leicester Tigers have cancelled a historic friendly in the United States because the US governing body have refused to sanction the match.

Some tickets had already been sold for the game in Philadelphia in August, which was intended to help launch a US professional league.

"Our experience in this case could lead you to question whether USA Rugby is more keen to protect its own commercial interests than to serve and promote the game of rugby as a whole in their country," said Leicester chief executive Simon Cohen.

Big air snowboarding introduced

Four new events have been added to the programme for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

The South Korean Games will feature curling mixed doubles, speed skating mass start, big air snowboarding and a team event in downhill skiing.

The new snowboarding event will replace the parallel slalom.

Aston Villa Ladies have re-signed central midfielder Abbeyleigh Stringer from Birmingham City Ladies.

The 20-year-old has made two appearances for Blues in Women's Super League Division One this season after signing for them last July.

"It's another positive signing for the club, it's a player that knows everyone at the club so will find it easy to settle in."

British 400m runner Christine Ohuruogu has been talking to BBC Sport about the publicity surrounding Mo Farah.

Farah's coach Alberto Salazar denies allegations made in a BBC investigation he has used illegal doping practices. There is no suggestion Farah is involved.

Ohuruogu, who once served a year ban for missing three out-of-competition drug tests, said: "It's hard - people don't realise that we're not robots.

"When people say nasty things it does hurt. It's not something you can just push to the back of your mind and get back on the track and run. It does a lot more damage than people think it does."

United Passions was funded by about £17m of Fifa cash, and was completed before corruption charges were made against 14 of its officials in May.

Starring Tim Roth as Sepp Blatter, the hagiography of football's governing body has had damning reviews.

The Guardian added that "as proof of corporate insanity it is a valuable case study".

West Ham to name new boss

West Ham say they will announce their new manager within the next 48 hours.

The club's board spent the weekend interviewing applicants and after drawing up a shortlist they are now at an advanced stage with the favoured candidates.

Sam Allardyce left the post after four years at Upton Park and former Croatia boss and West Ham defender Slaven Bilic is reportedly favourite for the job.

Five in Rangers frame

Chairman Dave King has revealed there are five candidates for the Rangers manager's job after it was confirmed that the Ibrox club face a second season in the Scottish Championship.

Stuart McCall, who took over from Kenny McDowall in March, is one of the five, while former Brentford boss Mark Warburton has confirmed that he has spoken to Rangers.

King has promised to "over-invest" and do "whatever it takes" to ensure their promotion.

Renault could quit F1

Renault could quit Formula 1 if the sport does not allow in-season engine development next year, Red Bull team boss Christian Horner says.

Renault, which supplies engines to Red Bull and Toro Rosso, admits it cannot catch Mercedes and Ferrari this year.

Limited in-season development is permitted in 2015, but has been closed off again for next year.

Horner said a failure to open it up would be "almost waving goodbye to" Renault.

Every couple of months, the Scotland forward gathers up the used boots in the Everton changing room and gifts them to Stewarton Athletic, an amateur side in his Ayrshire home town. So big Jimmy McGlumpher spends his weekend clattering around wearing footwear that was previously used by Ross Barkley. Remarkable.

Three draws, including a point against England, earned them a last-16 crack at the Romanians and, after a 0-0 draw, keeper Packie Bonner and defender David O'Leary were the penalty shoot-out heroes.

But a Salvatore Schillaci goal did for them in the quarter-finals as they lost to hosts Italy.

Elliott retires to become under-21 coach

Former Bournemouth, Burnley, Birmingham and Bristol City midfielder Wade Elliott has retired from playing to take up a coaching role at Ashton Gate.

The 36-year-old, who scored 80 goals in 706 appearances across a professional career that lasted 15 years, will take charge of City's under-21 side.

He captained the Robins to the League One title and Johnstone's Paint Trophy in his last season as a player.

AFC Wimbledon striker Adebayo Akinfenwa has turned down a move to Major League Soccer in order to sign a new contract with the League Two club.

The 33-year-old said: "There was a lot of interest in me, but that was not the sole reason for me going to America.

"It was also about my brand and shooting a documentary. I met with a couple of clubs in America and there was also interest from League One and League Two clubs. I even got a call from a club as I was driving in here today."

A Fifa spokeswoman has told the BBC that "the future travel plans of the Fifa president will be confirmed in due course".

This marks a shift in position from one week ago when Fifa confirmed it was still the intention of Sepp Blatter to visit Canada for the women's World Cup final on Sunday, 5 July and then travel to the US for the Gold Cup which begins on 7 July.

Meanwhile, Fifa has confirmed their secretary general Jerome Valcke will travel to Samara in Russia tomorrow for a scheduled board meeting of the 2018 World Cup local organising committee.

In that match the former Barcelona and Tottenham striker scored an 80th-minute equaliser to take the game into extra time.

Bees boss threatens Elite pull-out

Coventry Bees promoter Mick Horton is prepared to pull the club out of the Elite League over a row following the abandoned April meeting against Poole, BBC Coventry and Warwickshire reports.

The Elite League match was called off after 10 heats and awarded to Poole following heavy rain, but Horton wants the match re-staged.

"We will fulfil our obligations for this year. But we're going to review it at the end of the season," he said.

The game was notable for the first red card in a World Cup final, a dodgy penalty decision, the second red card in a World Cup final and the Germans winning their third world title.

In the process Beckenbauer wrote his name in history as the first World Cup-winning captain to later manage a team to victory.

Ten players are leaving St Mirren following their relegation from the Scottish Premiership.

Gregg Wylde, Marian Kello, Victor Genev, Jeroen Tesselaar and Yoann Arquin have been released, along with youth players Mark Williams, Mo Yaqub and Adam Brown. On-loan duo James Dayton and Emmanuel Sonupe have also left.

That seems to be the current trend when looking at the fortunes of players who have left Anfield since 2009.

Luis Suarez became the sixth former Red to be champion of Europe after scoring for Barcelona against Juventus on Saturday.

The other five are... Javier Mascherano who left for Barcelona in 2010 and won the Champions League title in 2011 and 2015.

Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa, who both moved to Real Madrid in 2009, won the competition in 2014, while Fernando Torres and Raul Meireles left Liverpool in 2011 and won it a year later with Chelsea.

Further to Darren Bent, news reaches us that he has signed for Derby County after being released by Aston Villa.

The former England striker scored 12 goals in 17 appearances during a loan spell at the Championship club last term.

Derby have also confirmed the signing of Republic of Ireland international defender Alex Pearce from Reading.

Burke makes breakthrough

Surrey seamer James Burke took a wicket with his first ball in Championship cricket as they fought back on the second morning at Grace Road.

The Football Association has agreed a four-year title sponsorship deal with energy firm SSE for the Women's FA Cup.

It is the first major sponsorship of the tournament, which will now be known as the SSE Women's FA Cup.

Chelsea Ladies and Notts County Ladies will compete in this year's final at Wembley on Saturday, 1 August.

The tournament is the largest cup competition for female footballers in England, with 259 teams entering the 2014-15 edition.

At Italia 90, England's Paul Gascoigne's weepingwas among the most talked about. Watch him blubber here.

The talented youngster was instrumental in England reaching the semi-finals, but was booked in the last-four tie with Germany and played a chunk of the game knowing he would miss the final.

Pistorius could be freed in August

Oscar Pistorius could be free on parole by 21 August after a recommendation from South Africa's correctional services department, according to reports.

The Olympic athlete was jailed last year for the culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Fages requests to leave Salford

Salford Red Devils scrum-half Theo Fages has requested to leave the club, but owner Marwan Koukash says it would take a bid in excess of the world-record £700,000 that New Zealand Warriors paid Wigan for Sam Tomkins two years ago to convince him to sell the 20-year-old France international.

"Theo did hand in a transfer request," said Koukash. "But if anybody wants to buy him, it would have to be for a world-record transfer. He is the hottest property in Super League."

Fages's current deal concludes at the end of the 2016 season and he has rejected the offer of a new contract. St Helens and Catalans Dragons are reportedly interested in signing the player.

Harry Redknapp thinks Rio Ferdinand should become West Ham manager, and says he would join him as director of football.

Redknapp managed centre-back Ferdinand at West Ham and then signed him for QPR last summer. Both are unemployed after leaving the Loftus Road side.

"Rio Ferdinand's doing his coaching badges and has got a great football brain. I'd like to see him as manager of West Ham, I'd go with him as director of football, that would be a good partnership," Redknapp said in his Kicca blog.

"I'm also a Paolo Di Canio fan, I'd like to see him go back to West Ham. I know everybody's slaughtered him but he was fantastic at Swindon."

One of the most iconic moments of Italia 90 was a 38-year-old veteran and his hip wiggling dance around a corner flag.

The player in question was Cameroon striker Roger Milla and you can watch a clip of that dance here.

Milla illuminated the tournament with four goals to help 'The Indomitable Lions' become the first African nation to reach the quarter-finals.

The twice African footballer of the year went on to become the oldest goal scorer at a World Cup finals, beating his own record set four years earlier by scoring against Russia in 1994 aged 42 years and 39 days.

Former England striker Darren Bent has been released by Aston Villa, who have offered Dutch defender Ron Vlaar a new deal.

Bent, joined Villa from Sunderland for a club transfer record of £18m in 2011 and scored 25 goals in 72 appearances.

Despite Italia 90 boasting the talents of Diego Maradona and Lothar Matthaus, it was an unheralded Italian who stole the show.

Salvatore Schillaci was the top scorer with six goals and was named player of the tournament as Italy finished third.

Just the season before he had made his Serie A debut, a £3m signing for Juventus from Messina and received his first international call-up for the finals at the age of 25.

In Italy's first first group match he came off the bench to score the winner against Austria and went on to score against the Czechoslovakia, Uruguay, Republic of Ireland, Argentina and England.

But following the World Cup his form dried up and he only made a further 10 appearances for Italy, eventually leaving Serie A for Japan's J-League.

These days he runs a youth academy in his home city of Palermo.

Kieswetter explains retirement at 27

Former Somerset and England cricketer Craig Kieswetter says the mental as well as physical scars of his eye injury forced him to retire.

Kieswetter broke his nose and damaged his eye socket and cheekbone while batting against Northants last July and announced his retirement on Friday.

"I came back and played a few games and got through on adrenaline and support," the 27-year-old told BBC Points West.

"I played a T20 comp and realised that physically my eye wasn't quite right."

Dina Asher-Smith announced herself as a genuine World Championships medal contender by clocking the second-fastest 200m time by a British woman at the Birmingham Diamond League on Sunday.

It took a photo-finish to settle the top three places, with Asher-Smith in third just behind Asher-Smith's time of 22.30 seconds was a personal best and just one hundredth of a second behind Olympic champion Allyson Felix and winner Jeneba Tarmoh.

Morecambe make triple signing

Morecambe have signed midfielders Peter Murphy and Aaron Wildig, as well as defender Adam Dugdale.

Murphy, 26, and 23-year-old Wildig have agreed two-year deals from Wycombe and Shrewsbury respectively, while 27-year-old Dugdale joins the League Two club from relegated Tranmere on a one-year contract.

Coles sparks Derbyshire collapse

In Division Two, 17 wickets fell on the opening day at Canterbury as Derbyshire suffered a dramatic collapse against Kent.

After dismissing the hosts for 205, Matt Coles (5-20) then reduced Derbyshire to 0-3, and a total of five visiting batsmen were removed for ducks as they closed on 67-7.

Two late wickets ensured leaders Lancashire edged day one of their game against Gloucestershire in Bristol as the hosts closed on 15-2 in reply to the Red Rose's 275.

Northants will resume on 43-0 in reply to Essex's 276, while Leicestershire, who won their first four-day game for almost three years last week, are 35-0 after bowling Surrey out for 261.

The forward, now 22, joined Bayern from Tranmere in 2011 and two years later moved to Barnsley for £250,000.

England midfielder Jill Scott says she will be running away from any Women's World Cup altercations after recently headbutting an opponent.

The 28-year-old Manchester City player received the first red card of her career and was banned after clashing with Arsenal's Jade Bailey in April.

"If you see any confrontations you'll see me running in the complete opposite direction," said Scott before England's opener against France on Tuesday.

There's probably a happy medium between running away and planting your head on someone, no?

Castleford prospect gets new deal

Castleford Tigers have handed a new four-year contract to 19-year-old prop forward Will Maher.

He was the first player to graduate for the RFL's regional academy programme when he linked up with Castleford in 2013 and has become a first-team regular.

"I was ecstatic when I heard the news. I'm over the moon as it's something I've wanted to hear for a long time. Just to hear those words that I was to be kept on for a bit longer was just awesome," said Maher.

Wigan Warriors players were forced to change in a canteen at John Smith's Stadium before Sunday's Super League win at Huddersfield Giants.

A power cut in the main stand forced Wigan to set up a temporary dressing-room under the north stand.

"It was just one of those things, we have a motto at Wigan - any time, any place, anywhere," head coach Shaun Wane told the club website. "You can't let things like that affect you so we just got on with it."

Wickets tumble in County Championship

Wickets tumbled on the opening day of the latest round of County Championship matches, with all seven matches already into their second innings.

In Division One, champions Yorkshire will be looking to Jonny Bairstow (25 not out) and Jack Leaning (20 not out) to try and establish a lead when they resume on 96-4 in reply to Middlesex's 212.

At Hove, James Vince will start day two unbeaten on 52, with Hampshire 116-4 in reply to Sussex's 251.

Farah reputation could suffer - Warner

UK Athletics chairman Ed Warner has told BBC Radio 5 live the allegations against coach Alberto Salazar could "dog" Mo Farah's reputation for the rest of his career.

BBC's Panorama investigation alleged last week Farah's coach had links to illegal doping - a claim Salazar strenuously denies. There is no suggestion of improper conduct from British Olympic champion athlete Farah.

"If I was a personal friend of Mo's, not the British Athletics chairman, I might have said to him 'the best thing to do is to suspend the relationship for now'," Warner said.

"However I completely respect the fact that Mo has a great loyalty to his coach and of course as the British Athletics chairman you absolutely can't make a knee-jerk reaction like that because Salazar is innocent until proven guilty."

In golf last night, England's Justin Rose lost to Sweden's David Lingmerth in a play-off as Tiger Woods finished last of those who made the cut in the Memorial Tournament.

Lingmerth, 27, held his nerve to win his first PGA title at the third extra hole after carding a three-under-par 69 to finish 15-under in his final round.

American Jordan Spieth hit a seven-under final-round 65 to tie for third with Italy's Francesco Molinari (71).

Russia and Qatar could lose World Cups

Russia and Qatar could lose the 2018 and 2022 World Cups respectively if evidence emerges of bribery, leading Fifa official Domenico Scala has said.

He said: "Should there be evidence that the awards to Qatar and Russia came only because of bought votes, then the awards could be cancelled."

Speaking to Swiss newspaper Sonntagszeitung, he added: "Until today, the respective evidence has not been provided."

Hamilton 'needed' Canada win

Mercedes's Lewis Hamilton admitted he "needed" victory in the Canadian Grand Prix, after his fourth win in seven races so far this season.

The Briton lost an apparently certain win in the previous race in Monaco because of a team strategy error and was determined to make amends in Montreal.

"Did I need this? I think so," he said after his dominant win. "I don't feel I needed to be relieved."

His win extends his lead to 17 points.

Ever wondered what the closest feeling to having a baby would be for a man? It is of course cycling for a hour really, really fast. If you're Bradley Wiggins.

The 35-year-old became the fifth person in nine months to break the world record for distance cycled in an hour - completing a distance of 54.526km (33.88 miles).

"That's the closest I have ever come to what it's like to have a baby. I'm just glad it's done. It was torturous."

LeBron inspires Cavaliers again

LeBron James inspired the Cleveland Cavaliers to an overtime 95-93 victory at Golden State Warriors to level up the NBA finals at one game each.

James scored a 'triple-double' - 39 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists. But Golden State overturned a three-point deficit in the final quarter to send the game into added time.

The Cavaliers trailed by a point until Matthew Dellavedova's two free throws with 10 seconds remaining tied the best-of-seven series.

"I tried to give it all to my team-mates. And they do a great job of giving it back to me. Total team effort," said James, 30, who was successful with 11 of his 35 shots from the floor.

England boss Roy Hodgson admits Raheem Sterling's situation at Liverpool has affected his form but says he will not lose faith in the forward.

Sterling has been criticised for wanting to leave the Reds and rejecting a £100,000-a-week contract with them. The 20-year-old struggled to make an impact in England's 0-0 friendly draw with Republic of Ireland on Sunday and was booed by home fans.

"He is going through a bad time publicly but I have no reservations about playing him," Hodgson said.

"He has done some fantastic things for us. Against Ireland he maybe did not hit those heights but it will take a lot before I and the English national team lose faith in him."
