We're all familiar with the stories about Everton's Steven Naismith being a good sort and giving tickets to unemployed fans, but it seems his generosity extends even further.

Every couple of months, the Scotland forward gathers up the used boots, external in the Everton changing room and gifts them to Stewarton Athletic, an amateur side in his Ayrshire home town. So big Jimmy McGlumpher spends his weekend clattering around wearing footwear that was previously used by Ross Barkley. Remarkable.

Furthermore, Naismith bags up all the leftover kit at Everton at the end of each season and his mum hands it out to kids in Stewarton.

Italia 90 was the Republic of Ireland's first World Cup and was an unqualified success even though Jack Charlton's side didn't win a single game inside 90 minutes.

Three draws, including a point against England, earned them a last-16 crack at the Romanians and, after a 0-0 draw, keeper Packie Bonner and defender David O'Leary were the penalty shoot-out heroes.

But a Salvatore Schillaci goal did for them in the quarter-finals as they lost to hosts Italy.

In the process Beckenbauer wrote his name in history as the first World Cup-winning captain to later manage a team to victory.

Luis Suarez became the sixth former Red to be champion of Europe after scoring for Barcelona against Juventus on Saturday.
