I talked about the Europa League's new design earlier. Here is more of an explanation from Uefa...

"The importance of togetherness is expressed in a circular 'energy wave' that radiates from the trophy forming the new logo for the tournament.

"This energy wave plays a prominent role in the overall on and off-air brand identity as a dynamic device that embodies the positive energy that is released during special moments in a match.

"It represents success achieved through the collective spirit of players and fans as they strive together for European glory."

    FC Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

    Adam Blackmore

    BBC Radio Solent sports editor

There has been over-reaction by some following Southampton’s exit from Europe but it is way too early for the panic button to be pressed and fingers to be pointed. It is just last season that they had their best Premier League finish so to call them a club in crisis before September… come on.

    Southampton

Yes, performances and results have been below the high standards of last two years but you cannot build quickly every year. At some point the policy of taking big money for key players is going to affect the quality of Southampton’s squad.

There is no way Saints could foresee the trouble caused by Manchester United’s apparent interest in Saido Mane and the rumours surrounding Victor Wanyama’s reported desire to leave. That is unsettling the squad but Saints, as a club, need to hold their nerve up until the transfer deadline and stick together.

Starting my notes and, from a Sunderland perspective, it may also be another blank day contemplating the tumbleweed as fans play the waiting game hoping new faces are going to arrive at the Stadium of Light.

    Commentator notes

There are irons in the fire but the negotiations with agents and players appear to be protracted. With Sunderland making a poor start to the season they are not the attractive proposition they may have been had they had a solid start.

Napoli's former Swansea midfielder Jonathan De Guzman may yet arrive but the procrastination over a deal appears to suggest he’s hoping for a better offer.
