The England Under-21 forward is wanted by Tottenham, who have had two bids swiftly rejected by the Baggies.

Berahino has had a transfer request rejected by Albion and held talks with chairman Jeremy Peace on Thursday, who reiterated that he will not be sold.

Pulis said: "I never say never about anything until it's closed and factual. It's not just about football it's about the person, about the lad and what he's going through. He's a human being, he's not just a lump of meat who people are trying to sell. He has emotions and having spoken to him he needs protecting."

Advocaat, sated by a pre-press conference jam doughnut, told BBC Newcastle he is hopeful of signing a striker on a permanent basis and a loan signing, believed to be a defender, before the window closes on Tuesday. He confirmed they are no longer pursuing Jonathan De Guzman.

Steven Fletcher is fit and will most likely start on the bench at Aston Villa but right-back Adam Matthews is out for six weeks with an ankle injury.
