    Jones Gatland

The 34-year-old tighthead retired after not being picked for Wales' Six Nations squad and told Jason Mohammad's programme on BBC Radio Wales that he wrote Gatland a letter in an effort to cope being dropped after winning 95 caps.

  4. Watford discover 'ruthless' top flight

    Football

    Geoff Doyle

    BBC Three Counties Radio sport

The three signings Watford made on deadline day took their summer tally to 15, more than any other team in the Premier League, at an estimated cost of around £35m.

    Craig Cathcart

But the question remains; will the squad be good enough now to keep them in the top flight?

The team that got them into the Premier League is now just a memory. Indeed the side that plays Swansea next up could feature just two survivors - Heurelho Gomes and Craig Cathcart.

The Premier League is a ruthless business and Watford fans are becoming increasingly aware of that.

  5. Pochettino happy with new additions

    Football

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino with some thoughts on his summer acquisitions.

"In Dele [Alli], Sonny [Son Heung-min] and Clinton [Njie] we have three young, fast and exciting players who can play in several different attacking positions.

"It's a squad of players with heart – it’s a squad I’m proud to field."

  6. Smith prepared for England attack

England v Australia (Thursday 13:45 BST)

Australia skipperSteven Smithis ready for England's attacking brand of cricket in the five-match one-day series beginning on Thursday.

    Australia captain Steven Smith

"The way they played against New Zealand was really good, they took the game on. Moeen Ali recently said they're trying to play quite similarly to the way we play.

"We know how they're going to play. They're going to come quite hard so we're going to get opportunities if we get the ball in the right areas. We've just got to make sure we take those opportunities."

    Football

Luton Town striker Jack Marriott has apologised for a gesture towards the away supporters after being sent off in Tuesday's victory over Leyton Orient.

"I made a mistake and am very disappointed in myself, I will learn from this."

Liverpool's transfer window - success or failure? - Emma Sanders

Time will tell on this one, Emma, but what I do think is successful is that they clearly had a strategy to get business done and avoid a trolley dash on the last day.

The owners FSG have shown faith in Brendan Rodgers and players such as Christian Benteke, James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez have already shown what they can do.

Maybe could have done with another solid midfield player but on the surface the business looks good - results will be the final judge though.

  10. Tykes on top at Headingley

    County Cricket

England batsman Jonny Bairstow  passed 1,000 Championship runs for the season as leaders Yorkshire made 391 in their first innings and then reduced Somerset to 44-2 in their second innings - still 237 runs behind - after day two at Headingley.

  11. Liverpool signing joins Finnish club

    Football

    Anthony Martial

Manchester United's new £36m signingAnthony Martial tells a news conference at France's training camp in Clairefontaine he was not concerned about the cost of the transfer.

"My family were definitely a bit nervous because of my high price but I'm going to stay focused on my work," he says.

"I'm not sure I'm worth 80m euros. I left for the football side. It's quite crazy for a player of my age but that's how the market works.

What was Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger thinking? One signing all summer and looks like no chance of winning the league - Boubacar Bamsey

This is as thorny a subject as we have been getting. And the answer is, Boubacar, that I honestly don't have a clue what Arsene Wenger was/is thinking.

    Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger
Image caption: Arsenal lost their opening home match to West Ham

No blame can be attached to Arsenal's hierarchy because the money is there and I am staggered that he has chosen to not sign an outfield player.

Wenger may be able to throw the criticism back in our faces at the end of the season but I think he has made a serious error in not signing a better striker, a high-quality defensive midfield player and perhaps even another central defender.

Arsenal fans sometimes get a reputation as moaners but I think they have every justification of asking questions on this one. They have every right to be frustrated.

  14. Regrets, I've had a few...

On that subject, the thoughts of former Manchester United and Newcastle winger Keith Gillespie.

  15. PFA chief Taylor hopeful over Berahino

    Football

Professional Footballers' Association chief Gordon Taylor tells BBC Sport the union has been in touch with West Brom and Saido Berahino’s representatives regarding the striker's unhappiness at the Baggies.

Taylor is hopeful the situation will soon be resolved and the club and player can come together again.

"I’d be surprised and disappointed if the situation was not resolved," Taylor said.

Can you fathom why Everton manager Roberto Martinez hasn't got that no. 10 he desperately wanted? Failed deal for Dynamo Kiev's Andriy Yarmolenko perhaps? - Alex

Martinez made it clear from day one of the window that a "number 10" was his priority, along with a left-sided central defender. He has failed to produce so that ranks as a failure after making such a show of needing one.

    Martinez

I do think Everton genuinely thought at one point that they had Yarmolenko but they must also have known buying from clubs in Ukraine can be notoriously tough and negotiations can become complicated - so not to have any sort of back up seems to be an oversight.

In the general context I do not judge Everton's window as a success either. There does not seem to be much cash around at Everton. Their ambitions were limited in this window and it may come back to hurt them.

  19. West Ham charged by FA

    Football

West Ham are charged by the Football Association for failing to control their players following Mark Noble's sending off at Liverpool last weekend. That dismissal was rescinded earlier today, incidentally.

  20. No deal

What changes, if any, would you make to your pre-season predictions now the transfer window is closed? - Paul Knott

Great question, Paul. It is far too early to make any changes but, at the top, I would certainly think a lot harder about putting Chelsea as champions, Arsenal second and Manchester City third. Manchester United in fourth still sounds about right to me.

    Chelsea v Crystal Palace
Image caption: Chelsea have lost two of their opening four league matches

City's start to the season and their transfer business gives them the look of champions, while Chelsea have not had a good window and Arsenal have hardly bothered.

But what's done is done and the time for assessing the predictions is at the end of the season. I may even get some right.

  28. Grayson leaves Essex

    County Cricket

Essex announce that Head Coach Paul Grayson has left the club by mutual consent.

Grayson, 44, played 138 first-class games for the county and became coach in 2007, guiding the team to the Friends Provident Trophy in 2008

Assistant Chris Silverwood will take temporary charge until the end of the season.

  29. Bears put Middlesex on back foot

    Middlesex 171-7 v Warwickshire

BBC WM's Mike Taylor at Edgbaston:

"Warwickshire remain on top but with yesterday's play having been lost they will need to keep the intensity high.

"Jeetan Patel bowled for most of the afternoon from the Birmingham End and put all the batsmen in difficulty, but Neil Dexter held firm to reach 50 not out, surviving one difficult chance.

"He found useful support for an hour from Ollie Rayner, but will need more after tea if Middlesex are to remain competitive."

  30. Berahino latest

    Football

    Pat Murphy

    BBC Radio 5 live

"Saido Berahino won’t face the inevitable disciplinary process until next Monday, when he will meet leading executives at the club to discuss his expected fine for Tuesday’s Twitter outburst and to see how they can get such a discontented player back on side.

"West Brom’s postponement of the meeting is designed to draw away some of the media focus on this spectacular fallout between chairman Jeremy Peace and Berahino.

"Mr Peace’s relationship with the player is nowhere near as crucial as the role head coach Tony Pulis will play in his reintegration. I understand Pulis was resigned to losing such a valuable but disillusioned player but he, somehow, has to talk Berahino round.”

  31. Swindon confirm Ajose signing

    Football

We reported earlier (at 14:51 to be precise) that Swindon were set to sign Nicky Ajose following the forward's release by Leeds United.

Well, Ajose has now signed a three-year deal with the League One side.

  32. Chalobah heads to Italy

    Football

Nathaniel Chalobah has joined Napoli on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea.

    Chalobah

The England Under-21 international, who has effectively spent the past three seasons away from his parent club, has headed to Serie A to find first-team football.

Chalobah, who can play in defence or midfield, has previously had loan spells Watford, Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough, Burnley and Reading.

  33. Noble red card rescinded

    Football

Mark Noble will be available for West Ham's first fixture after the international break against Newcastle after the red card he received against Liverpool was rescinded.

The Hammers captain was sent off in the 78th minute at Anfield when referee Kevin Friend judged him to have fouled Danny Ings.

    Noble

Noble insisted afterwards that his challenge was not even worthy of a yellow card.

"Great news," tweeted West Ham co-owner David Gold. "Mark Noble's red card has been rescinded and he will be available to play against Newcastle."

  34. Brook to face Chaves in Sheffield

    Boxing

Kell Brook will defend his IBF World Welterweight title against Diego Chaves at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on 24 October.

    Kell Brook

"Chaves is a rough, tough, durable fighter who is very dangerous,” said Brook. "He’s bringing something new to the table.

"He’s coming off a draw to Tim Bradley, was ahead on the cards against Brandon Rios until he was disqualified and gave Keith Thurman a solid fight so we know what level he has mixed at and how good he is."

  36. 'Walters has role to play at Stoke'

    Football

    Matt Sandoz

Stoke City commentator, BBC Radio Stoke

The short-term future of Stoke City forward Jon Walters is now clear after the uncertainty of transfer deadline day, and who would bet against him not playing an important part the Potters season.

    Jon Walters

The signing of Mile Jedinak from Crystal Palace - a deal which collapsed after personal terms could not be agreed - would have added an extra steel to the midfield but his signing wasn’t going to make or break the Potters' season.

What fans want to see now is the guile of players such as Walters combined with the flair of Xherdan Shaqiri and Marko Arnautovic in what is widely-regarded as the strongest Stoke City squad for several decades.

    De Gea

Can Man Utd convince De Gea to sign a long-term contract? - The Melz

I would be amazed if De Gea signed another contract with United. He would have done it by now and I think that ship has sailed. United will be pleased to still have him, for all the nonsense of the collapse of his move to Real Madrid, but I am 100% convinced that this time next year he will be gone.

Sorry if that's not the answer you wanted.

  40. Northeast ton frustrates Lancashire

Kent 499-6 v Lancashire - tea, day two

BBC Radio Manchester's Scott Read at Canterbury:

"Lancashire were well below par during the afternoon session, bowling as poorly as they have done all season and Kent cashed in.

"Sam Northeast finally converted a half-century into a hundred for the first time this season but Darren Stevens will be kicking himself, having slog swept Simon Kerrigan for six, he tried a similar shot the next delivery and was caught in the deep for 92."

  41. Smash and Grabb attempt fails

  42. Hampshire earn modest lead

Durham 213, Hampshire 251 - tea, day two

BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James at Chester-le-Street:

"Hampshire were bowled out on the stroke of tea for 251, a lead of 38 runs.

"John Hastings picked up two wickets this afternoon to add to his two in the morning to keep Hampshire from building a sizeable lead.

"But Durham’s catching was average, with five dropped in the innings. In a low-scoring game they may prove to be very costly indeed."

  43. Ask Phil...

    Football

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

Who do you think is the surprise signing of the summer? Mark

Think it has got to be Antony Martial going to Manchester United for £36m - a deal that came out of nowhere and was completed within 24 hours, causing shock waves across Europe.

    Martial

The surprise non-signing has to be Arsenal's lack of business.

Best signing may just be Swansea City signing Andre Ayew on a free from Marseille.

  44. Bairstow leads Yorkshire dominance

Somerset 110, Yorkshire 364-7 - tea, day two

BBC Radio Bristol's Stephen Lamb at Headingley:

"Yorkshire extended their first innings lead past the 250 mark on day two at Headingley, with Jonny Bairstow showing further signs of the excellent form that has re-established his international credentials.

    Bairstow

"Bairstow reached the tea interval unbeaten on 76 from 94 deliveries, and in doing so passed 1,000 runs for the season in the County Championship.

"Somerset's Craig Overton also passed a milestone, taking his hundredth first-class wicket by trapping Aaron Finch lbw during an excellent spell with the second new ball."

  45. Benteke out

    Football

Belgium striker Christian Benteke became their second casualty ahead of Thursday's Euro 2016 qualifier against Bosnia when he pulled out of the match with a thigh injury.

    Benteke

However, coach Marc Wilmots says Benteke - who had a scan after being injured in Liverpool's defeat by West Ham United on Saturday - could return for Sunday's Group B game in Cyprus.

On Tuesday, midfielder Mousa Dembele was ruled out of both matches because of an ankle problem.

Belgium trail group leaders Wales by two points as they seek a top-two finish to clinch a place at the finals in France.

  46. Ask Phil...

    Football

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

We gave you the chance to put your questions to BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty.

Phil, what are your thoughts on clubs trying to do business in the last hours or minutes of the window? - Jean-Paul Breyer

Never understand it, Jean-Paul, and never have. I can understand the need for deadline-day deals (and our lives as journalists would be a lot duller without them) but when they are big moves that you knew were coming for weeks such as Real Madrid's move for David de Gea and Tottenham trying to sign Saido Berahino from West Brom then there is really no excuse for it.

    Saido Berahino

Clubs risk being held to ransom or not getting deals done because of complications with paperwork, bids being turned down and such. Oh, and look what happened.

  48. 'His body isn't ready'

    Cricket

Reece Topley's body is not ready for Test cricket, according to his father and former Essex bowler Don Topley.

The 21-year-old will join Hampshire from Essex in the winter, and made his England Twenty20 debut on Monday in the victory against Australia.

    Topley

Topley has struggled with back injuries throughout his career.

"His red-ball stats are very good, but he's not going to play Test cricket for England for a few years. He's young, his body can't handle that," he said. "But what he can handle is playing one-day cricket - he's good enough and strong enough to contribute to that."

  49. Vote closed

The vote, ladies and gentleman, has now closed and the results in.

We asked what your preferred transfer system would be?

An overwhelming 69% want the window to close when the season starts, 13% want a draft system similar to the US and 12% want the window scrapped completely.

    A further 6% voted other.

    Thanks for getting involved.

    David De Gea

Essex 265-7 v Northants - lunch, day two

BBC Radio Northampton's Alex Winter at Chelmsford:

“The future of James Foster is being debated at the moment at Chelmsford, but he has shown he still retains the ability to apply himself with the bat, playing a vital knock here for his fourth Championship half-century of the season.

"He’s had Mark Pettini for company throughout the morning and the pair have recovered Essex from 119 for 6 to 265 for 7 at lunch - the wicket coming in the last over before the break, Rory Kleinveldt making the breakthrough and picking up his 50th Championship wicket of the season."

"We’ve had it confirmed Saido Berahino has been given extra time off, so will meet face to face with club bosses for the first time on Monday, though the main issue at the moment for the Midlands club is inaccurate reports over the fee offered by Tottenham.

"Our sources are adamant the final offer from Spurs was just £6m up front with the rest in add ons and performance based bonuses.

"Not enough to enable Tony Pulis to move for Charlie Austin at QPR, who would have been Albion’s main target."

  70. Lancashire toil against Kent

Kent 332-5 v Lancashire - lunch, day two

BBC Radio Manchester's Scott Read at Canterbury:

"It looks a slow, docile pitch at Canterbury which is making the bowlers and batsmen work hard for runs and wickets.

"Sam Northeast reached 50 from the last ball before the lunch interval, with Lancashire still four points away from securing promotion.

"Jordan Clark having bowled a terrific spell first up and after seeing Northeast dropped by Toby Lester he eventually got some reward with the wicket of James Tredwell."

"There was an excellent partnership between Gary Ballance and nightwatchman Steven Patterson which lasted most of the morning session, but Craig Overton found the edge of Ballance’s bat with a bit of extra pace and he was caught at second slip for 91.

"It’s been Yorkshire’s session again and they will just look to bat and bat today and accumulate the bonus points and extend their lead well beyond Somerset’s reach."

    Golf

    Rory McIlroy

World number one Rory McIlroy has been given a special exemption by the European Tour in order for him to play in the lucrative season-ending Final Series.

An ankle injury meant he would not meet the 13-event qualification standard in order to remain in the Race to Dubai even though he currently leads the rankings.

But McIlroy has committed to play a further three events to take his tally to 12 and, as a result, officials have used their discretion to ensure their star name is not absent from their showpiece finale.

  73. Bears' bowlers fight back against Middlesex

Middlesex 82-4 v Warwickshire - lunch, day two

BBC London 94.9's Kevin Hand at Edgbaston:

"After yesterday's washout, Middlesex would have been delighted to reach 52-0 after the first hour of the second day at Edgbaston but the hosts have reduced them to 82-4 at lunch.

"Paul Stirling hit 41 before edging to slip and is the only score of note for the visitors.

"The wickets have been shared by the Warwickshire attack on a pitch that has swung despite mild overhead conditions, while spinner Jeetan Patel looked threatening in his brief appearance before the interval."

Saido Berahino will meet key West Brom officials on Friday to discuss where he goes from here after his desired move to Tottenham failed to go through.

Chairman Jeremy Peace - who blocked the move - is on holiday but will be available on conference call if necessary, joining head coach Tony Pulis, chief executive Mark Jenkins and director of football (admin) Richard Garlick in a meeting held when the players return from a two-day break.

West Brom are adamant Tottenham did not offer enough in their initial downpayment, and that the final total spread over five years would add up to £22.5m – not enough in Mr Peace’s estimation. Even then, that final sum was dependent on appearances and where Tottenham finished in the Premier League.

The closure of the transfer window - and, in particular, the sale of last season’s player of the year Bradley Johnson to Derby - appears to have divided the Norwich City faithful.

For some it marks the premature end of a Canaries career which culminated in promotion at Wembley last May. For others, getting £6m for a player who had started just one of City’s four Premier League games so far makes sense.

    Bradley Johnson

Perhaps a more pressing concern is what didn’t happen. Many players were linked with moves to Carrow Road but the lack of defensive cover arriving has worried many supporters.

    Football

    Simon Stone

    BBC Sport

Even in this world of mega-money deals, some players are untouchable. As the dust settled on a hectic 48 hours at Old Trafford, a senior Manchester United source said the only thing that stopped their two-time player of the year David De Gea being in that category was the length of his contract.

    David de Gea

Though no guarantees have been offered, it is anticipated De Gea will eventually be restored to his former status as Louis van Gaal's number one keeper. It is felt if any discontent has been created by the manager's refusal to pick the player so far this season, it is superficial and the relationship will soon be restored.

Around Old Trafford there is also quiet satisfaction that Real Madrid have not got their man - as they did with Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 - although the club deny completely that they deliberately held the transfer up.
