Wayne Rooney will be presented with an award next month if he breaks or equals England's scoring record in the coming days.

With England facing minnows San Marino on Saturday and then taking on Switzerland at home three days later, Rooney - on 48 goals for country - stands a good chance of breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's 49-goal all-time scoring record.

It is understood the FA plans to honour the Manchester United forward with some kind of trophy or plaque before England's next home game against Estonia on October 9, with Charlton likely to hand the award to Rooney on the pitch before kick-off.

It is hoped that Gary Lineker, who scored 48 times for his country, will also be involved in the ceremony at Wembley.

You know how some people don't have a high opinion of what they call today's footballers?

Well, this story won't do anything to change their minds.

The Sheffield Star, external is reporting that Sheffield Wednesday’s loan move for Gary Hooper fell through after the Owls turned down the striker’s request for a VIP box at Hillsborough,

The move collapsed, it says, "over the provision of a VIP box at Hillsborough, which are thought to retail at around £30,000 a season, for Hooper’s friends and family".

The striker, perhaps coincidentally, has since tweeted the following...

Berahino to have Friday meetingpublished at 12:03

    Football

    BBC Radio 5 live

Saido Berahino will meet key West Brom officials on Friday to discuss where he goes from here after his desired move to Tottenham failed to go through.

Chairman Jeremy Peace - who blocked the move - is on holiday but will be available on conference call if necessary, joining head coach Tony Pulis, chief executive Mark Jenkins and director of football (admin) Richard Garlick in a meeting held when the players return from a two-day break.

West Brom are adamant Tottenham did not offer enough in their initial downpayment, and that the final total spread over five years would add up to £22.5m – not enough in Mr Peace’s estimation. Even then, that final sum was dependent on appearances and where Tottenham finished in the Premier League.

Mixed feelings at Norwichpublished at 11:34

    Football

    Chris Goreham
    BBC Radio Norfolk sport

The closure of the transfer window - and, in particular, the sale of last season’s player of the year Bradley Johnson to Derby - appears to have divided the Norwich City faithful.

For some it marks the premature end of a Canaries career which culminated in promotion at Wembley last May. For others, getting £6m for a player who had started just one of City’s four Premier League games so far makes sense.

Perhaps a more pressing concern is what didn’t happen. Many players were linked with moves to Carrow Road but the lack of defensive cover arriving has worried many supporters.

Much will be expected of DR Congo international Dieumerci Mbokani, who ended Alex Neil’s long search for a striker when he joined on loan from Dynamo Kiev.
