New coach, for the time being
Cricket
Jerome Jayaratne will be Sri Lanka's interim coach for the home series against West Indies beginning next month, the country's cricket board has announced.
Sri Lanka were without a head coach after Marvan Atapattu resigned earlier this month following the team's back-to-back home test series defeat by Pakistan and India.
Instead of finding a full-time replacement, Sri Lanka put its head of coaching and former under-19 player Jayaratne in temporary charge of a team grappling with a tricky transition following the retirement of batting stalwarts Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.

Lacking spark
Tennis
Russell Fuller
BBC tennis correspondent in New York
Andy Murray's racquet was not the magic wand it so often appears. He lacked a spark, and the usual pop on his groundstrokes in the teeth of an exceptional performance by Anderson, who proved he doesn't just rely on a big first serve.
Expletives littered the air and a racquet was smashed, with Murray even engaging the umpire about the length of the South African's bathroom break. Murray gave everything he could to complete his second spectacular comeback in a week but ultimately ran out of steam at the end of a long, hot American summer.
'I had my opportunities'
Tennis
An emotional Murray smashed his racquet - handing it over to a spectator - and argued with the umpire during his defeat.

"To lose a match like that, that was over four hours, tough obviously after a couple of tough matches earlier in the tournament, as well. It's a hard one to lose, for sure," the Scot said afterwards.
"When you're playing against players that are at that level, you need to make them think and then give them a chance to get nervous.
"I felt like I had my opportunities there but didn't manage to capitalise on them."
Bad night for Brits
Tennis
So to the tennis, where it was not a good night for the Brits.
Johanna Konta was always going to be up against it in taking on a two-time Grand Slam winner - though she played well in defeat to Petra Kvitova.

But Andy Murray's exit came as a big shock, beaten 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-0) in four hours and 18 minutes as South African Kevin Anderson reached his first major quarter-final.
It is the first time since the 2010 US Open that Murray has lost before the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam.

O'Neill's men knew victory would seal Northern Ireland's qualification but a mistake from goalkeeper Michael McGovern gifted third-placed Hungary the lead with about 15 minutes left.

"I've never seen a player booked twice in one incident and I don't agree with it." said O'Neill.
"For a player to be sent off like that could have cost us a place at the finals."
'Pure theatre'
Football
Straight to Northern Ireland, whose boss Michael O'Neill described the 1-1 draw with Hungary as "pure theatre" after Kyle Lafferty's late leveller left them two points from Euro 2016 qualification.

"The onus is on Hungary to win their last two games." O'Neill said.
A win at home to bottom side Greece or victory in Finland, or two draws, would ensure Northern Ireland qualify for their first major championship since 1986.

Toulon deny doping allegations
Rugby Union
Triple European champions Toulon have angrily denied allegations of doping.
Marseille prosecutors are investigating several pharmacies in Toulon, in the Cote d'Azur, after notification from France's anti-doping authority.
Reports allege Toulon players had been supplied with anabolic steroids.
Club owner Mourad Boudjellal said: "No player is concerned in this affair, it is totally unfounded information. This is related to a social security fraud that concerns the pharmacist not RCT."

Cow manure on pitch
Football
Check out this story.
Forest Green Rovers chairman Dale Vince has revealed how he is using his experience of statistical analysis in energy trading to help recruit players.
Among other things he has banned his players from eating red meat and introduced the world's first organic pitch, which is spread with cow manure (hope the players shower thoroughly afterwards).
Before you mock, Forest Green are top of the table, having taken maximum points from their first eight games and their 100% start is a 30-year record for their division
"We are having a good time. We are ambitious to go up but we want to do it in the right way," said Vince.
'No excuses for Man Utd'
Football
Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera says fourth place in the Premier League would not be good enough for the Old Trafford club and they have to aim higher.
"Last season was the first with the new staff and a lot of new players like me but, now, we have no excuses," Herrera told the official Manchester United club magazine. "We have to fight for everything.
"We are going to try to win every game. When I see the millions of supporters we have, I just think we cannot be fourth in the league, we have to be higher."
Is the loan system being abused?
Football
When England under-21 midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah moved to Napoli on deadline day last week it took the number of Chelsea players on loan to 33.
Critics have suggested the club is stockpiling talent for financial gain; it made £10m on Romelu Lukaku while he was on loan West Brom and Everton, for example.
But Chelsea insist they are merely trying to develop its players by giving them experience across Europe at a higher level than they are currently being offered.
BBC Sport's Alistair Magowan has looked more closely at the merits of the loan system and asks if it is doing any harm. Read more here.

Snooker
Former referee Michaela Tabb has reached an agreement with World Snooker after sex discrimination claims she made against the game's governing body.

World Snooker, which denied the claims, said the parties had "come to a confidential accommodation" after an employment tribunal in Bristol.
Tabb, 47, refereed two world finals.

'I'm not sure he's had enough time'
Rugby Union
Former England wing Chris Ashton has became the latest critic to doubt Sam Burgess's inclusion in England's World Cup squad.
In a column for the Daily Telegraph, Ashton said: "Sam's going to be a really good (union) player. If he's had enough time is another question. I'm not sure he's had enough time to play at 12 at the level that's required.
"I definitely think he will be an England player, forwards or backs. I'm just not sure on what time scale."
Former England captain Will Carling and Irish great Brian O'Driscoll earlier weighed into the debate, saying Burgess was a risk.

Webber attack F1 depth
Formula 1
Ex-Formula 1 driver Mark Webber says the strength in depth on the current grid is the lowest it has ever been.
The Australian, who retired in 2013, feels the number of 'pay drivers', such as Sauber's Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson, is not good for the sport.
"These guys are on a phenomenal level but the depth has never been weaker," Webber told BBC Radio 5 live.
"We need to get the calibre that we have at the front of the grid. We need more depth and the cars to be faster."
Murray on 'tough' loss
Tennis
Andy Murray said it was "tough" to see his run of 18 successive Grand Slam quarter-finals end with defeat by South Africa's Kevin Anderson at the US Open.
The 14th seed won their fourth-round match 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-0) in four hours and 18 minutes.
It is the first time since 2010 that Murray has not reached at least the last eight at a Grand Slam.
"Many years' work have gone into building that sort of consistency. To lose that is tough," said the British number one.

Fell is the fifth player in recent weeks to put pen to paper on a new deal with Joe Clarke, Ed Barnard, Joe Leach and Ross Whiteley all opting to extend their stays.

"My mum actually reminded me when I was speaking to her yesterday that when we were here back in 2007 for juniors, I said: 'This is the most amazing stadium.' I completely forgot about that.

Konta, 24, had only won one Grand Slam main draw match before arriving in New York this year.
She is projected to rise from a ranking of 97 to inside the world's top 60, just behind British number one Heather Watson.
How it panned out
Tennis
Tale of the match...
'My phone has frozen'
Tennis
Kevin Anderson, as you might expect, was pretty happy after victory and says he now wants to compete with the elite on a more regular basis.
"That's how I approach my tennis. Obviously I want to get to that stage," the South African said.
"Top 10 has been a lifelong dream for me. I feel like I'm getting closer - even top five, I think that's ultimately where I want to be.
"My phone has kind of frozen because of how many congratulatory texts I've received. It was awesome to see all the support and actually amazing to see how many people were watching the match."

How England's group looks...
Ready for action
Football
England, of course, have no such worries, already qualified for Euro 2016 in France thanks to that 6-0 win over San Marino on Saturday - which made it seven wins from seven.
It means that, from England's point of view, there isn't too much riding on tonight's Wembley clash with Switzerland.
Roy Hodgson would beg to differ, though, and so too Wayne Rooney, who stands on the verge of history ... one more goal and he will break Sir Bobby Charlton's England scoring record.
We'll have build-up to the match throughout the day and there will, of course, be live text commentary of the game itself on the BBC Sport website.
How it stands
Football
This, then, is the situation in Group D. Who will get third - the Irish or the Scots? Time will tell...
Two-way fight
Football
Republic of Ireland - who beat Georgia 1-0 thanks to a Jon Walters goal - end their campaign with a home fixture against Germany and a trip to Poland, thus facing a difficult end to qualifying.
Gordon Strachan's men play Poland (h) and Gibraltar (a) in October - and former Scotland international Pat Nevin is confident that they can still claim a play-off place.
"If the Republic don't get any more points, which would be unsurprising, and Scotland draw with Poland and get a win against Gibraltar, they would get third," Nevin told BBC Sport. "I think that is fairly likely."
Which means the end to this group could be very interesting indeedy.
Worrying times for Scotland
Football
The phrase 'looking good' cannot, however, be used for Scotland.
Gordon Strachan's men lost a thrilling encounter with world champions Germany, which, on the back of Friday's defeat to Georgia, leaves them scrambling for points from their last two qualifiers to reach the play-offs for Euro 2016.
All, however, is not lost yet...
Looking good
Football
This is how it looks for Northern Ireland. At the risk of tempting fate, they can almost start booking their hotel for France next summer.
'It could have cost us'
Football
O'Neill's men knew victory would seal Northern Ireland's qualification but a mistake from goalkeeper Michael McGovern gifted third-placed Hungary the lead with about 15 minutes left.
It got worse for the hosts when Chris Baird was sent off for two bookable offences in the same phase of play, before Lafferty's injury-time equaliser was met with scenes of jubilation at Windsor Park.
The out-of-favour Norwich striker kept his side top of Group F with two matches remaining as they look to reach their first ever European Championship.
"The onus is on Hungary to win their last two games." O'Neill said.
A win at home to bottom side Greece or victory in Finland, or two draws, would ensure Northern Ireland qualify for their first major championship since 1986.
