    An appeal against the decision to demote Simple Verse to second place in the St Leger will be held on Thursday.

    Bondi Beach, who passed the post second at Doncaster on Saturday, was awarded the race after a stewards’ inquiry into interference during the closing stages.

    It was the first time a horse had been disqualified from first place in the Classic since 1789.

    Simple Verse had been supplemented at a cost of £50,000 and would have been the first filly to win the race for 23 years.

    A stolen bicycle worth €12,000 (£8,800) has been recovered from a second-hand shop in the Spanish city of Malaga, where it was offered for sale at 1/100th of its value - €120.  

    Police were inspecting the shop for suspected stolen goods when they spotted the bicycle's "exceptional technical characteristics".

    It belonged to a rider competing in the Vuelta a Espana race around Spain.

    The bicycle was returned to its owner on Sunday, the final day of the race.

    Stoke City's goalkeeper Jack Butland says their lowly position in the Premier League is only a "blip".

    Stoke, who were beaten by Arsenal on Saturday, haven't won this season and have made their worst start since they were promoted in 2008.

    Butland said: “We owe it to the supporters to turn our form around we have to give them something to cheer about, I can ensure the fans we will be doing everything we can to win the next game at the weekend.”

    Winger Gilliead and defender Gillesphey, both 19, have signed 28-day youth loan deals and will stay at Brunton Park until 11 October.

    They could make their Carlisle debuts at York on Saturday.
