Newcastle United admit a charge of failing to control their players in last weekend's derby defeat at Sunderland.

"The club has admitted the charge but has submitted an application for it to be reassessed due to mitigating circumstances."

World Cup finals seldom stick to the script. Four years ago New Zealand's triumph was masterminded in the end not by Dan Carter, nor his replacement Colin Slade, or even his back-up Aaron Cruden, but by fourth-choice fly-half Stephen Donald, a man who had been summoned from a whitebait-fishing trip and ran onto the pitch for the final wearing a shirt that appeared to be borrowed from a teenage girl.
The All Blacks will be happier with a less complicated final act this time around. Keep the bad guys at bay. Let their heroes do their thing. Make the ending a happy one, for one great champion at least.
Missed what was said earlier? Here's some of the best quotes from Premier League managers today:
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal on Paul Scholes's criticism: "You have an expression. Sticks and stones can break my bones. Names never hurt me."
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on whether he can secure a Champions League spot: "I cannot promise."
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on Mourinho: "I think if you are not a journalist or a referee he is a nice guy."

Celtic boss hits back at critics

Celtic manager Ronny Deila has hit back at his critics after coming under pressure for the club's disappointing European form.
The Hoops failed to qualify for the Champions League group stage and were defeated 3-1 against Molde in the Europa League on 22 October.
Former Scotland and Aberdeen defender Alex McLeish, who won the treble as Rangers boss in 2003, was quoted as saying, "even if you win domestically just now it might not be enough," while former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner said: "I don't think that Celtic are getting better in Europe."
"Where are the other Scottish teams? I don't know. I haven't seen them in Europe," said Deila. "The national team is not in Europe either - they aren't going to the Euros."

'Dangerous Rooney'
Crystal Palace v Man Utd (Sat, 15:00 BST)

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew says Wayne Rooney's frustration makes him "dangerous". Manchester United and England forward Rooney has scored just two Premier League goals this season and missed a penalty as his club were eliminated from the League Cup at home to Middlesbrough in midweek.
"He is at the top of the pitch now and maybe he is not getting the service he would probably want in that," said Pardew ahead of United's visit to Palace on Saturday.
"I can see a little bit of frustration in him but that makes him dangerous. Rooney has proved many times, particularly when he gets criticism, that he can deliver."

Swansea manager GarryMonk will remind his players of their good recent record against Arsenal before their Liberty Stadium visit.
"They are always very tough games against Arsenal but we've managed to get some decent results against them home and away,"
Monk has not lost any of his previous three meetings with Arsene Wenger, Swansea claiming a 2-2 draw at the Emirates in March 2014 before doing the double over Arsenal last season for only the second time in their history.
Wenger criticised Monk's approach after Swansea's "smash-and-grab success" in north London in May when Bafetimbi Gomis scored an 85th-minute winner, the Arsenal manager complaining the Welsh club "refused to play completely and just defended."

"Honestly, if I were him, I'd go back to rugby league," Cusiter told BBC Radio 5 live's Friday Sports Panel.
"I don't think it's due to the criticism he's had. He hasn't set the world on fire. It's more the scale of the task ahead of him. The amount of time it would take him to get up to speed and become a world class rugby union player, I don't think he has enough time."

"Hopefully that will happen next week. Shane Long is also progressing well but not good enough to play this weekend. There are no other injury concerns this week."
When asked about the currently unconventional looking Premier League table, and Southampton's chances of potentially reaching a Champions League spot, Koeman dismissed it as too early to be looking at table positions.
"At this stage, the table is not important. Chelsea will not still be struggling at the end of the season. Our experience tells us that its very difficult to break into the top four."

Portland Timbers will feel good about life this morning as – perhaps with some divine intervention – they made it through the MLS play-offs on Thursday night.
Trailing 2-1 with three minutes of extra time to go, the Timbers levelled against Sporting Kansas City, prompting an incredible shootout.
A total of 22 spot-kicks were taken. With the chance to win it, Sporting’s Saad Abdul-Salaam stepped up and saw his kick strike one post before rolling along the line to hit the other.
His case of torrid luck would prove costly as Portland goalkeeper Adam Kawarsey smashed home from the spot before diving low to his right to complete a double-whammy, saving the next penalty to win it.
The Timbers are of course the MLS franchise with a mascot called Timber Joey, who uses a chainsaw to cut a ring of log at games – presenting the fresh cut to goalscorers after the match.

"The most positive thing is we're playing like a confident team. We've won the respect of the league," Flores told BBC Three Counties Radio.
"For example, Arsenal didn't rest any players against us even though they had an important (Champions League) match three days afterwards."

"One of Villa's most dependable employees for the best part of 20 years, Kevin MacDonald, will be caretaker interviewee at Villa's press conference at midday.
"The affable Scot has usually been one to keep a low profile, but his work for the club in developing generations of younger players is widely respected.
"MacDonald oversaw seven Villa games in 2010 after Martin O'Neill left abruptly, and returned to the club earlier this year, having had a brief spell as a manager at Swindon.
"He will no doubt answer questions in his usual thoughtful manner, but it would be surprising if he was able to shed much light on whether Villa are much nearer to appointing Remi Garde, or anyone else, as manager."

"Louis van Gaal was a man on a mission at the Aon Training Complex.
"The Manchester United manager knew criticism would follow his side’s Capital One Cup exit to Championship side Middlesbrough and Paul Scholes did not disappoint.
"He had his answers ready, even if he had to be reminded of the correct way to complete the ‘sticks and stones’ English proverb he said was fantastic.
"Interestingly though, he dropped the name of his assistant, Ryan Giggs, into the list of people to whom Scholes’ criticism of United’s style of play should be addressed.
"Scholes and Giggs were team-mates for almost two decades and are part of a the tight-knit ‘Class of 92’ shown in the early days of their Salford City ownership on BBC One in the first part of a two-part documentary last night."

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport says that Valentino Rossi is considering going to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to have his grid penalty overturned.
Leeds owner Massimo Cellino has admitted he is considering his future at the club and that his spell in charge is proving to be "a nightmare".
The 59-year-old Italian lodged his appeal against a second Football League ban in 12 months on Wednesday, having failed its owners' and directors' test last week following another tax conviction in Italy.
Steve Evans recently became the club's sixth head coach since Cellino took control of the club in April 2014, but he has yet to win in three games and Leeds are without a home victory in nearly eight months after Thursday night's 2-0 defeat to Blackburn.
"Now I have a low quality of life," the Italian said. "I feel shame when I walk to the shop to buy cigarettes if we lose a game. I convinced my family to come here and they have run away. Bath release a statement denying they breached the salary cap last season. They were one of the clubs reported to be under investigation by Premiership Rugby.
However, it's worth noting that no club has actually been found guilty of "breaching" the salary cap.
Instead, it was announced last week certain clubs reached "settlements" over salary cap "issues".

Newcastle United admit a charge of failing to control their players in last weekend's derby defeat at Sunderland.
A statement on Newcastle's website reads: "The charge relates to the players' reaction to the match official's decision, which saw Sunderland awarded a penalty and captain Fabricio Coloccini issued with a red card, which has since been rescinded.
"The club has admitted the charge but has submitted an application for it to be reassessed due to mitigating circumstances."

Midfielder Harry Arter is in line for his first Premier League start of the season. However, manager Eddie Howe remains without long-term absentees Callum Wilson, Max Gradel and Tyrone Mings (all knee).
Out-of-form goalkeeper Artur Boruc is still nursing a thigh problem, so Adam Federici is again expected to start in his absence. Captain Tommy Elphick is also still out with an ankle injury.
Will Carter exit in style?
New Zealand v Australia (Sat, 16:00 GMT)
Tom Fordyce
Chief sports writer at Twickenham

Monk will remind players of their record against Arsenal
Football

'Burgess should make rugby league return'
Scotland and Sale scrum half Chris Cusiter says Sam Burgess does not have enough time to become a good rugby union player and thinks he should return to rugby league.

Southampton manager, Ronald Koeman has been speaking to the media about their derby match against Bournemouth on Sunday.
"Of course its a derby, maybe not one with a big history but in my opinion its a different one than a normal game at home," said Koeman.
"What I respect of Bournemouth and the manager, is their philosophy about football. They were by far the best team in the Championship last season."
When asked about the best way to counter that philosophy Koeman suggested it was to "press at the right moments and maintain good pressing. That's one of our qualities. If its the wrong moment, Bournemouth have the potential to counter."

Portland's penalty shootout drama
Football

'We are improving' - Van Gaal
Crystal Palace v Man Utd (Sat, 15:00 GMT)
There was one major talking point at Louis van Gaal's news conference - Paul Scholes.
The former United midfielder has claimed he would not enjoy playing in van Gaal's side.
"When we shall lose and lose and lose I shall be finished. I know that," added Van Gaal.
"But we are improving. We now have 20 points from 10 games. Last year it was 13. We are in the Champions League. Last year we had 15 injuries. This year we have three. It can't be done in one year, it takes three years.

Cellino unhappy at Leeds
Football
It's like being at a party where you're not welcome. It's killing me. Every night I lie awake, asking myself, 'Am I good enough?'."

West Brom manager Tony Pulis is not one to pull any punches - or sit down in his news conference.
He did neither today. When asked about this weekend's opponents Leicester, he suggested Claudio Ranieri is doing so well... because of Nigel Pearson.

"Last season was a remarkable achievement and Claudio has picked it up and carried it on. It's difficult for me to say but let's not forget the work Nigel did, the three, four years he was at that club putting them in a position for Claudio now to push on."

Louis van Gaalwas sick of questions about Manchester United captainWayne Rooneyafter last Sunday's goalless draw with Manchester City, but in a week where the England striker has missed a penalty in a shootout against Middlesbrough as he appeared to have a laser shone into his face, and seen his recent performances defended by former United players Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville, that may prove difficult again today.
The Dutchman would probably rather focus on the performance of the team, so is sure to be asked about why having spent over £250m since he arrived in 2014, how concerned he is his team has failed to score in their last 235 minutes of football. Paul Scholes admitted this week he wouldn't have enjoyed playing in this Manchester United team which he says lacks creativity and risk, will van Gaal respond?
